Personally I like watching basketball games, mostly NBA. I actually don't watch much TV and only have Netflix and NBA league pass subscription. Having no broadcast TV at home (by choice) means I don't watch other sporting events, which is a bit unfortunate because I'd definitely watch some high profile events like the world cup and Olympic games had they been more accessible.

Sports I occasionally leave home for include mountain biking, inline skating and billiard (8 ball). In the past also dingy sailing. Unfortunately I don't find much time to practice (as in participate in sports) these days.

Note: For the purpose of this poll, any sporting activity (even working out) qualifies as participant sport, not only competitive activity.

Are you a spectator or a participant?

View Results
Spectator (I watch sporting events, but don't practice any sport)
Participant (I practice sports, but don't watch any)
I both watch and practice sports
I don't watch or practice sports
Dan Quayle and I take turns, first he watches and I practice, then we switch

When I was 13, I used to do aikido. Then I quitted that because of my exams and like that stuff.I am not into any sports right now but I want to. I think casual biking and swimming can not be count as a sport.

I can see (somehow) why you would count out biking if is was for the purpose of commuting and not for recreation, but how is swimming not a sport?

Yeah, swimming is a sport but I don't swim as a proffessional but I believe I am good at it on some point.

When I created this thread I didn't think of a clear distinction between participating in (competitive by nature) sports and working out. I guess I should have, because your jogging/running for sure qualify.

Edit: I updated the OP with a note about this.

it was ok, i think working out and doing sports is very different, health vs entertainment.
at least that's how i see it, others will have another definition for this.

i'll change my vote to participant, then.

i watched a dota match for 5 minutes, but i will never understand how people would rather watch someone playing instead of doing it themselves.

csgo... played less than 30 minutes, the rest is just idle time

Now, I dont do either, but I could never stand watching any sport besides hockey and boxing, both for same reason. And auto racing for crashes. I used to enjoy playing some sports, but the older I get, the less fun it is.

Spectator in football (I mean the real football, you know, the european one) and spectator + participant in basketball. I really like playing basketball. But I can watch most sports and participate in a lot of sports too. I go at the gym too and run when going at long distances.

I feel bad seeing that "don't do anything and don't watch anywhing" is winning :/ well, all person is diferent but I think the sports are understimated just for the football... (soccer if you are from EEUU) and I like see women's soccer but it's true xD

It seems some people thought that recreational sports / working out isn't sport, which is probably why that option in the poll got so many votes. I added a clarification to the poll, and now things don't look so bad. This poll isn't really focused on competitive sports.

I enjoy participating in a sport much more than I like to watch it. Though I'm not a very competitive person, I enjoy cycling, running, fitness by myself. I also like kayaking and swimming though I don't do it often.

I'm quite a large person and I was nearly 6 foot tall when I was 13. I got stuffed in the school football and rugby teams just because of my size and I grew to really enjoy sport even though I'm otherwise quite nerdy. I continued playing amateur football during my twenties although I've now gotten a bit too old and fat and injury prone, and I've also played and enjoyed cricket. The only 'sport' I play now is snooker. I'm less enthusiastic about spectating but I watch my local football team when I get the chance, I love to listen to the premier league football on the radio while I'm painting, and when the test cricket is at Edgbaston (my nearest ground) I love to go and get really drunk with some of my friends...

I think they're usually geo-restricted, and local channels here are selective about their content. Not everything is available via the internet, especially not live.

Plenty of streamers upping the feed from their local tv of live sports if you know where to look or are willing to do it. Most of it seems to be football (soccer), but then that's what I'm usually looking for. Some of it uses p2p software like sopcast or acestream, but there's also browser streams.

A few of the more well known listing sites I know of. Like I said, the focus is mainly on soccer on these, but there is some other stuff too:
fïrstrow.eu
livetv.sx
r/soccer streams
sportsstream.tv
wiziwig.to
rojadirecta.tv

Then there's kodi/xbmc. Never got into that, but you can watch quite a lot on there too so I hear.

Thanks for the list. I encountered sopcast while searching for streams, but wasn't willing to install an unknown executable downloaded from sites that look very dubious. Maybe I should try it in a VM.

The streams I tried directly in the browser had terrible quality, well below what I'm getting from NBA League Pass. Granted, they're free, so you get what you pay for.

While growing up, I played football (aka soccer, for some ^^) and basketball and also did cycling, cross country, swimming and gymnastics.
Then adult life and personal issues got in the way and I just run and cycle a little bit when I can, but only to keep myself in shape-- other than that, I mostly just watch sports these days.

I think you can continue doing it on your own after a while. I just kept practicing the basic 24 forms on my own when I had to stop learning from a teacher. :)

As a Brazilian, I heavily watch football (soccer). I watch all Brazilian leagues and cups, not only when my club (Palmeiras) plays, and some European leagues (Premier League is awesome to watch, for example). Ocasionally, I watch some Barcelona games to see Neymar.

But about practicing it... I played at football (soccer) junior clubs as a kid, but because of asthma I couldn't continue.

If it weren't for my asthma, I would definitely be playing football (soccer) for fun. I just love everything about it. Now the closest I get to that is kicking and dribling round objects when I found them on the street.

May I ask why I'm blacklisted? I respect your decision, just curious

The reason is that you entered the ungiftable keys List 1 (Iteration #3) without adding a comment about which key/s you took (or which keys you tried to activate and were already used). See more details in the relevant ungiftable keys thread (specifically the parts in bold).

Fair enough. I honestly dont remember your thread but I can't imagine I would take a key without saying thank you (since I get onto people for doing that.)

Most times I like to click on a sgtool protected giveaway just to see if I can pass it. I obviously was too lazy to read your rule that said not to enter unless I plan on taking a key. I'm not saying this to be taken off your blacklist, but I do want to apologize for being a lazy reader and not reading your rules. Thanks for being honest :p

Other than work, drumming 4 hrs/day and Shotokan Karate are the only physical activities in which I take part recently. I used to swim a lot, but had to stop doing that recently.

I guess Shotokan counts as participating, since we spar regularly, so I voted that way. :X

Used to be more of both participant and spectator when I was younger,
I used to do Silat (Malay self-defence martial arts) but then I just stopped cuz I lost interest.
Also used to play badminton; stopped cuz my siblings lost interest and I didn't really went out of my way to play with others. Plus I entered a school competition and got my butt handed over at 21-0.
Played futsal a bit back in the day but an ankle injury that made me unable to walk for a month scared the shit out of me and stopped lol.

As for now I only watch football (soccer) usually the English Premier League and the occasional sporting events like the Olympics when it's televised cuz adding more sport package channels costs quite a bit over here.

PS: I don't qualify but thanks for the GA and this discussion :)

I got my greatest joy out of being a spectator, when I was much more of a participant. I gained so much inspiration from watching professionals play, that I had more fun doing both. Now that I don't play as much, I don't watch as much either. For me, the two almost have to go together.

Ik like to daily run and cycle (road cycling and cycle cross mostly) but due to some health issues I'm physically not able to do sports and the thing is that I'm under Doctors order to gain weight.

BuT I also like to be a spectator to most sports especially cycling, football and major sporting events.

I used to play 5 a side football when I worked at places that organised it after work (but not done that for around 7 years)

I rarely watch sports nowadays, although in the past I've been a season ticket holder at Stoke City FC & have seen all the major cricket nations play live (mainly when I worked out in Sri Lanka). I still do listen to test cricket on the radio though. I rarely watch TV and very occasionally watch the highlights of a Stoke match or an England match

I'm not very fit but I do keep an allotment which I find much more interesting and rewarding than running or going to the gym.
