Which one is better value? An old classic or a new Indie game?

The bells and whistles associated with newer Indie games are impressive, but overall how do they compare to large-scale developed retro games? Which one is best?

(F.Y.I -- I think I carry a few Indie games in my library, more than the retro ones rest assured)

An individual game's value is determined by how much enjoyment you get out of it, not by the genre it is in.

This. There are plenty of good retro games and indie games alike, neither of the two game types in general are inherently better

Neither old classic, nor indie is a genre.

You have to take each game on an individual basis. I think you mean specifically "AAA retro games" vs. "high quality new Indie games", they could both have their merits especially if they are both "new to you". Some gamers may prefer the graphical style of newer indie games aver retro classics however - even though they often have a similar visual aesthetic quality. In the end you just have to judge each game individually.

But the budgets of indie games often leave a lot to be desired. Expectations of indie devs cannot match those of fully-fledged gaming studios right -- cult following vs. one with a global audience?

If budget made something good, people would like Man of Steel.

None at all. :P That said, I'm not saying you can't like something or go against the flow. God knows I like some stuff everyone else hates. But generally, from what I understand, Man of Steel was a complete flop, despite having more money than the Avengers thrown at it.

The lone indie dev with open source/freeware tools of today can possibly make games of similar quality to the high budget, large dev team games of 25 years ago.

From title to title, in general "retro">indie. Steam is kind of newcomer when talking about old games distribution, so games which are actually placed here are usually best ones you can get. Since it's probably good idea (money grab) for IP holders, we will see a lot more really bad old games released in future days of Steam. Anyway you should be warned, that majority of these releases are nowhere near the compatibility of GoG releases.

By the way, retro is defined as something modern made in the vein of a classic game. So when you say "retro game," it means something like 8-bit Commando, Retro City Rampage, etc. These are all relatively newer indie games.

Agree, retro games IMO are some pixelated sider scroller or over head view action games with simple control. Some indie dev are doing the same thing. But also, many other indie dev are making some games look like cheap flash games...

Hit up GOG.com right now and get some classics games for free.

Personally, I prefer a lot of the older classics. It takes a lot for a new indie game to get my attention. But when it does, it is one helluva good game. Terraria is a great case in point.

But, the classics are just that for a reason. They have stood the test of time and proven themselves - enough so that newer games are based on the classics.

Yes, also the classic Fallout games (Fallout 1,2, and Tactics) are free on GOG.com for 1 day.

Get them free before they disappear permanently...they will no longer be sold on GOG because of a copyright transfer from Interplay to Bethesda.

Indie and classic are such broad terms. You can't really compare groups as broad as that.

What's better value? A platformer or a real-time strategy?

The commanding hundreds of units is cool and all, but how does it compare to bitching jumping skillz? Which one is best?

Do you see the issue with what you asked?

out of personal preference i would say rts

but anyways by retro, you can often get last years AAA games for less than $10 (Bioshock infinant, Borderlands 2, dishonored, far cry 3, tomb raider), so I would go for those if any of them interest you. For example, I would say, Metro Last Light ($13 on sale) is better than starbound which is $15

You completely missed what the point of my post was. Not only that, but you don't even understand what retro means. It does not mean AAA games from last year.
