Free stuff is nice, but I don't get it, do they think, that people will buy something from they store if they give something away ? I very much doubt that it works that way.

With respect to humble, I expect they do get a few sales from it.
Signing up for the mailing list (which is usually required to get the freebies) means they can now tell you about new bundles. Plus when you retrieve the key you see all the current bundles.
If you didn't know about them in advance, or you see a wishlisted game is now part of a bundle for a dollar, then you may very well buy it.
Its advertising which reaches a very large audiance without any real effort on their part!
