The Impossible Quest

You are a knight in shining armor at the very end of your journey sitting in front of the Giveaway Castle Gate. You don't know what lies beyond the gate and frankly you don't even care. What matters is your journey and being able to finish your quest. You reach for the gate and notice that it needs a key that strongly resembles the shape of the key given to you by the Almighty Cat Wizard during your previous quest after you saved him from the Leecher Dragon.

You suddenly remember the Wizard told you the key has to be activated by a special magic word that is to be revealed upon fulfilling the old prophecy written on the map that was given to you together with the key.
Fortunately, you brought the map with you. Unfortunately, you forgot the key at the very start of your quest so you must now head back to get it before the Time Vortex engulfs the Giveaway Castle Gate on September 30th, 2018 at 23:59 as foretold by the Almighty Cat Wizard.
Since you don't have much time, you decide to follow the map to find the hidden locations across the realm that hold the magical word pieces that only the Chosen One can find, while also heading towards the place holding the key.

You open the map and read the prophecy written by the none other than C. G. Alchemist:

"The chosen warrior will get six gems of steam and extract five ounces of Gabenist by grinding four times the amount of Valvenite necessary for a regular spell. They shall use their extraordinary five basic senses as guidance to create six support profiles to hold the most durable four of the gems.
The other extraordinary two gems will be coated three times by using any of the secret alchemical four techniques until the magical quotient reaches at best two degrees on the measuring scale. The amount of Gabenist shall be sprinkled over the darkest three gems of them all and by dropping them into dark souls extract and stirring exactly one time there shall be created two imaginary shapes to hold everything in place.
Everything is then combined to form the magical key activating solution that shall be used by the chosen warrior to open the Giveaway Castle Gate and prevent the Time Vortex from engulfing it forever.

You shake your head in disbelief as if nothing made sense, look at the map, take out your lucky compass, get on your horse and start heading towards south-west in an attempt to find the best route towards achieving your quest goal. Good luck you mighty warrior!

Long version:

  

  • We obviously have a chessboard as the realm map.
  • The chessboard is scrambled meaning the order in which you navigate the realm is very important.
  • You are a knight. A knight in chess moves in an L shape.
  • You are at the very end of your journey. The "very end" position on a chessboard is H8. This is the starting point and it leads to the first character of the key.
  • You need to return to the very start. The "very start" on a chessboard is A1. This is the end point and it leads to the last character of the key.
  • The middle three characters are found using the prophecy.
  • The prophecy has two types of sentences: those with clues and those without. We're only interested in those with clues.
  • The prophecy holds the clues in the form "Word Number", where the starting letter of the word before the number is the horizontal position on the chessboard and the number is the vertical position.
  • The knight moves from the start of a sentence to the end of the sentence. Each end of the sentence marks the position of a letter of the key, meaning the last clue before the full stop (the dot) of the sentence marks the key letter. Why? Because the knight, during his journey obviously needs to stop when he finds the clue in order to retrieve it.
  • The prophecy reveals 3 letters that are combined with the start and the end ones to generate the final key.
  • To help even more, I added the south-west direction to indicate the end-to-start direction.
  • I also specified you get on your horse for those knowing "the knight" in chess by the term "horse".

As I came to a dead end with the other puzzle. I come to make my 3rd and more serious look at your puzzle.

EDIT: Most(but not the obvious stuff) of this is overthinking & you can ignore it.

It really looks like you invested much time, love and creativity into it. Not even a puzzle but some story as well. Thank You! Let my/our rotten brains work a little bit! :)

I have no clue about Nordhbane's puzzle and hope I don't need it and for yours it's the same^^


So were to start??? Ok south-west ...corner? the d? Or do I start at the Castle Gate?
Where to end? A GA-key made out of 5 symbols...

What map do we have?. If it's like a chessboard are field names used like B3? And if yes just to make it clear would the bottom left corner be A1)
Expect for the part darkest three gems I see no possible meaning behind black and white yet.

The text... way to much to see and interpret.
Stating the obvious: We have some numbers there^^ Do they form pairs of three?

There are also some keywords most of them also seam to have a pattern, but not all...

Now some more interpretation: 6 gems = 6 symbols? Divided into 4&2 and latter 3 are reduced to 2 => 6-1=5 gems(symbols)?
Or are the gems in the end just only some nice text addition with no meaning.
EDIT: While I think I partly understood it and think that my question is wrong I leave it here.


Some stuff I think about and wonder if there could be a connection to your puzzle? (I guess if you don't understand it I'm wrong or interpret too much)

Does 211420 have a meaning within your puzzle?
Do you know a guy named K.F.? Or is what I'm guessing the other 2nd Support?
Is Evil some sort of Darkness? Not sure if these three pretty close gems count as the darkest.

Thanks for the kind words. Without giving out too much info I'll simply say that you have some interesting ideas and I suggest exploring them a bit. I'll give you a few pieces of advice to help:

  • The text based adventure game is actually playable, although its solving doesn't necessarily require it.
  • The start and end points are clearly hinted and actually emphasized after today's added hints. Have a look here.
  • Don't overthink it too much. You might add unnecessary or even wrong steps into what is otherwise a pretty straightforward approach.
  • Although inspired by Nordhbane's puzzle, it doesn't use the same principle and prior knowledge of his puzzle is not required even though you can use certain aspects with a different meaning to emphasize a certain approach.
  • I devised it to be solvable even if you're stuck with missing info as long as you grasp its core mechanism. This implies you can recover from tough spots and even bruteforce the missing info in as little tries as possible. But where's the fun in doing that?
  • Don't use complicated formulae. They're not required.
  • Use the game instructions, the "prophecy" and the map. They're all required.
  • Try to look at it from a fresh perspective. Being used to the usual puzzles can become a disadvantage.

I already think I gave too many hints at this point :)
Anyway, I strongly believe solving the puzzle is more fun than the reward so hopefully it's enjoyable and with a fresh approach. Have fun ;).

If you're stuck at four, you can still solve it in at most six tries ;). But those four need to be the correct ones for this approach to work :)

I smell something as well but can't make out the direction.
I now used some pretty simple method to navigate the map - but as said can't feel the direction.

AND I found something puzzling left by some failed student two years ago. But I don't know if that was a totally (un)lucky mistake and I will be totally lost continuing from there or if I really have the right starting point and stumbled in the right direction and now need to figure out the real system.

If you guys have no clue what I mean let me know please - Then I would know that I'm on the wrong track, anyway I try to continue to figure out how to combine all this stuff.

Not sure if it's honorable to be lost but I take it as a great compliment. After a nights sleep I'm sure that I started at the wrong Castle's gate, heading for the (hopefully) real Gate now... shaking my head as nothing makes sense Where is my horse?

QQr11(what an odd combination) - An evil puzzle - a failed student - it seamed fitting... I would love to write the lore myself if I had time -- ignores the stuff he should do & and spends time on this puzzle --damn hypocrites^^

Next time I tell you the story from the Running Sausage left by InquisitorAles (need a bit more polish but good enough):


as the young herald stumbles away from the Fallen Scholar and his dark practices. He looks at his map again, last time he started at the wrong Castle Gate but now sees another possible more simple Gate at the horizon. Again he has this smell in the nose and tries to follow it but he can't grasp it. He looks at the map and the prophecy but as the smell becomes stronger he gets distracted - not realizing his mistake he goes too far and to make it even worse his horse is gone and he has to walk by foot from now on- should he get it back?
Hitting a dead end he's lost and stumbles left and to the right again. Feeling pretty down he moves south.
whooooosh... what was that?
whoosh...something else. This time a sweating man dressed in red and kinda fearsome cloths... An Inquisitor!
Luckily he passed without giving him much more than a glance. The young herald decides to follow him and not far the chase comes to a halt as the herald caught that little running thing.
A sausage great :)
The young herald looks at the map again and suddenly it overcomes him - he didn't start at the Gate
it was Hate.
Now he first has to still his hunger before he goes on his next adventure


Leaving on a real journey tomorrow, that's why I am (should be) busy. Not sure if I have the time and internet to finish your quest.

680 visits and countless attempts later and the solution hasn't been found yet. I was planning on making a harder one with a higher level reward but I'm afraid it's gonna end up with negative entries :) (jk).

There are still 5 days left so I hope at least one person will get to the end of it. The solution is pretty straightforward, I promise.

The description, the prophecy and the map are all required to solve it. You need to reconstruct the correct key that leads to the giveaway, meaning the 5 characters code that allows access to the giveaway. Take a step back, read it again without making any assumptions and you should at least get the start and the end right. Have fun!

If I'm allowed I would like to give out some hints as well & pass on some I received in private.

First, gather your information, what do you see? What is obvious?

While the lore and story is cool, strap it down to the very essential parts - there is an easy pattern - nothing secret hidden or overthingking - like I did (see one of my last posts) necessary.

Still there are two points your start and the destination missing, you need the map and the text (not the prophecy) arround it to find them out.

Lastly you need to find out how to get the correct key out of your information gathered. It's not obvios but a simple principle.

I merely pointed you in the right direction without giving away anything crucial to solve it. You did all the work and you solved it by yourself, therefore you deserve the credit for that.

I pretty much gave the same pieces of advice to all the people who contacted me separately as long as they showed they did try to reach the solution. People tend to overthink it too much. I like to keep it as logical as possible.

I also had some unpleasant surprises with some people plainly demanding the solution from me and even threatening me with blacklists and other such childish actions which shows how much some people consider themselves entitled to receive everything without any work.
It both amazes me and makes me wonder what made them take my little game so serious as to cross the line of common sense and go into the realm of jackassness.

Anyway, that aside, I think people already have a nice collection of hints now, that should help them get on the right path and tackle the solution in an educated manner or even bruteforce their way through if they missed anything on the road even though that shouldn't be the case.

Depending on where you're stuck it can be as little as six tries. I meant bruteforcing, as a recovery option, when one is stuck, in order to get out of a roadblock. Doing it for everything defeats the purpose of the puzzle. It's possible but I don't see the point in doing it.
