Hey, I actually used to love playing Pokemon games, but the vanilla Pokemon games seemed to be lacking something. Well, low and behold, many Pokemon fans and enthusiasts have resorted to creating ROM Hacks or RMXP-made games that improve upon the traditional Pokemon games we all know and love.

The main difference between ROM Hacks and RMXP-made games is that ROM Hacks use the base gameplay engine of regular Pokemon games to create their new Pokemon experience (Popular examples include Pokemon Fire Red Omega, Pokemon Liquid Crystal, Pokemon Light Platinum, etc.) while RMXP games use the RPG Maker XP Software to craft their own Pokemon experience from the ground up (Popular examples include Pokemon Zeta & Omicron, Pokemon Insurgence, Pokemon Reborn, etc.)

Here are the games you need to play (these lists are in no particular order):

ROM Hacks

  • Pokemon Glazed
  • Pokemon Fire Red Omega
  • Pokemon Liquid Crystal
  • Pokemon Light Platinum

RMXP-Made Games

  • Pokemon Zeta & Omicron
  • Pokemon Insurgence
  • Pokemon Reborn

If you have no idea where you want to start, go with Pokemon Zeta & Omicron, literally it's a full-fledged game, 8-badge main story that has a good level curve and is actually challenging. Two post games with another 8 badge-section and a 4-badge section. Yes, you read that right, 20 badges, as well as hours and hours of game time in such a well developed game. Kudos to thesuzerain for developing such an outstanding game.

Zeta & Omicron is completely done, the last patch/update was almost a year ago now. Hours and hours of gameplay, it's what I'd go with if you're looking to get your pokemon fix every once in awhile, game will last you a long time.

The RMXP games are definitely a different scene than ROM Hacks, whereas ROM Hacks have some good Hacks and some bad Hacks with most being towards the middle, average level - RMXP games are more polarized - they're either great or bad, not really an between average experience.

It's always like that when there are game, there are good ones and bad ones. But since i think you've at least tested the game you've presented here, they're a good try to start from. Have taken at least a look at Zeta & Omicron, but not much played yet. Will see later if i get more time to play it :)

And i don't think i'll have many time to try to discover new ones, as my steam backlog is likely large enough to stop me for a year :)

I finished Pokemon Raptor a lot of times, it's probably the best non-hack game out there.

I think my main problem with Pokemon ROM Hacks (and occasionally the main games too) is the story so if they choose to change it. Most of them follow along Link from The Legend of Zelda series where the protagonist is some part of a prophecy where he is a chosen one by the almighty gods to fix up some huge evil/organization in a more broody environment.

That and they try to bring in anime canon. That stuff needs to die.

The only Pokemon ROM hacks I played are randomizers.
