I think a lot of people moved to online chess because there are more players there. there are many websites with chess.

No idea about the PC game, but I have a copy for the NES. I don't really play chess so I can't help much and this comment is fairly pointless :)

Those are games from 2006, 2008 and 2012. Right now exactly 3 people are playing the Steam version of EndWar. Are big publishers supposed to cater such tiny groups forever?

EndWar's SP campaign is still a solid experience. At its lauch, the voice commands were quite an innovation as far as strategy games are concerned.

And this is relevant with Golwar's post because...?

Are you from the Relevance Police, or something? I think Golwar can type for himself if there's something wrong with my comment.

He is right though, your reply isn't related to those games being old and rather unpopular today.
Besides, all that this list tells us is that the servers will be shut down. You still should be able to play those solo player campaigns, no matter if the servers are offline or if the game is taken from the store.

I think the point was: just because the games are old and their MP side gets removed doesn't justify pulling the whole game from the store when their SP side still works great. It's not as if removing it from the store would allow Steam to free up storage space, since as you say people who own the game already will still be able to play it.
As for chess games in particular, I'd go as far as to say the MP side is irrelevant as long as the AI is good. Playing against the computer is a full part of how "professional" players train after all...

The problem probably is that some people expect online functionality, when they buy a game. Even if the store page should be updated to inform that this part is gone. If the revenue doesn't justify the hassle, it is a quite logical move to remove the games. Not to mention if the game should experience several more technical issues, running on new hardware and OS.

I'm not sure if grandmasters are a good example about what the average chess player expects from their software. ;D

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a Steam Store page saying something along the line of "Beware that while you can still buy this game and play the SP campaign, MP functionality isn't available anymore". Well, actually: https://store.steampowered.com/app/209000/Batman_Arkham_Origins/

As for chess, even as an occasional player the AI is a nice opponent: adjustable level, short waiting time between moves, always available, can be paused, can cancel a move and try something else... I frankly don't see any reason to play this game vs a human, apart from "multiplayer for the sake of multiplayer" (and from IRL, in-person games)

I didn't say that it isn't done this way, only that it can be too much of a hassle. Simply said, if a publisher could still make profit with little effort, do you think they'd make their products unavailable for no reason?
They'll know better than you or I if a product still sells numbers worth mentioning. And they'll also know better if it makes sense to sell their games if some features are stripped away.

You should know yourself btw. that your "I frankly don't see any reason to play this game vs a human" view certainly isn't representative for chess players in general. Otherwise the 2.7 million games on chess.com just today wouldn't happen.

Thank you for the suggestion. This one caught my eye. Not released, yet still promising a fresh perspective.

I have Chessmaster X as I recall (not totally sure about the number). I never unlocked the set for 65 ranked wins.
I was hoping to buy it on steam at some point, so the news that they removed it is sad.

This is really sad, because Chessmaster is by far the best chess game. I own the Grandmaster Edition (not on Steam) and it's wonderful.

If you have $70 to drop, there are some hard copies of chess master on Amazon. If youre looking for a steam key you're out of luck though

I've found that people lack the patience (and intelligence) these days to want to learn to play chess. As for me, I LOVE chess. I'v even taught people to play.

SO hard to lose on purpose to keep them interested in the game. Especially when you are 4-5 moves ahead of them.

Forgot to mention my suggestions for replacements. If you want another program and not chess.com or lichless, Fritz certainly has the most complete package and offers the best functions to teach chess.

If you are looking for the best free chess GUIs and engines:
http://www.playwitharena.com/
https://www.triplehappy.com/

Arena has imho the better interface, Tarrasch comes with the Stockfish engine already included. For Arena you'd have to download it here: https://stockfishchess.org/. Or you could just use those that Arena provides.
