Well, emojis is just a unicode characters, same as letters or numbers. Elder operating systems don't know the difference, so they show it as black-and-white characters (if there are appropriate characters in the font) or simply as a squares (if font lacks those characters). Newer systems knows about emojis, so they use color images instead of those characters (I don't know exact mechanisms used for this).

It actually depends on both the browser and the OS. I always have fun opening threads like this in Firefox on Linux, everything is a godamn square.

well, you are right, it can depend on browser too. But I don't know about any browser that supports showing color emojis on the operating system that does not support it. Is there one?

Not that I am aware. I wasnt really referring to color ones in my comment, but more in general to which ones are shown(and not just a square) because there can be some really big differences between browsers.
