just check your browser's download history.

a .scr is basically just a .exe and could contain anything. but if you don't execute it, you're safe, even if it had been downloaded.

There has been a discussion about this a while ago and there somebody said, as soon as you click the picture link the scr file downloads and executes automatically unnoticed in the background. Unfortunately I can't find this discussion again.

maybe if you're using Internet Explorer 3

modern browsers strictly separate web-stuff and operating-system-stuff, and downloaded files don't just magically execute themselves, unless there's currently a zero-day-exploit that I'm unaware of.

of course, if your download-confirmation-dialog was set to "open with ..." instead of just "download to ..." then the file gets executed upon being downloaded.

Man, why did you click on it to begin with?._.

Can't believe people nowadays still falls with this kind of stuff. It's just too strange and not trustable at all.

I've had the same thing. Don't know why but I clicked the link and it downloaded the file. I didn't open it, deleted the file straight after. That would have been about a week or 2 ago and I've had no issues since.

I'm sure it will be as the file wouldn't have been opened. If you're concerned, maybe try running other virus scanners and anti-malware programs just to make sure there's nothing your virus scanner is missing.

Besides doing virus/ malware scans, I would recommend to do following (I learned it by experience, the hard way)

Most virus, automatically, run as soon as your PC starts. Here's what I recommend:

  • Do not restart your PC (Depending on the virus/ malware/ other software, it can make it a lot worst).
  • since you have CCleaner, click "Tools" and go to "Startup".
  • There check individually each program that is enabled ("Enabled" "Yes). Copy and paste the program's name on google to see if it a secure program (it will also tell you what's the program for)
  • if you find the virus (or any other virus) first disable it. (How do know it is a virus: you will find that name associated to virus when searching on google or, very rarely, if you can't find anything at all about that program on google).
Then you see the file location on the right (on CCleaner). Permanently delete that folder, then remove that startup (click on the right side of the mouse and click "delete").

I have to go to sleep now. If tomorrow, you still have the problem, feel free to contact me.
