So, a buddy of mine needs an upgrade from his crappy 6 year old laptop. (He can't get a PC for personal reasons.)

He's only willing to spend $1500-2000 on the laptop. Now, he's pretty set on getting an Alienware, but honestly I've heard a lot of bad stuff about them, and I'm 95% sure he could get something better for a similar price, thoughts? Also, please list any advice for it, I'm trying to help him out.

No but seriously.. Alienware is way over priced.. Laptops just aren't worth it though if you realllllly think about it

I've moved a PC to LAN tournaments...? and? It's not hard you know..

Edit: Plus they do have shuttle pc's that ARE easy to carry around ;)

Well, I've tried to explain that to him that it would be easy to move around, but... Eh, he's set in his ways. Oh but, he doesn't really have room for a PC either.

The monitor does take up alot of space for sure though, and that means not being able to move it without paying extra.

It doesn't take a lot of space. You can place the thing right atop computer case. And with how slim and lightweight modern displays are anyone can move it with no effort whatsoever.

But laptops are meant for mobility. You can't deny that.
And what if he wanted to do something on the computer while travelling?

I also can't deny that they are not particularly powerful and not very convenient when it comes to playing games.

Anyway I just wanted to point out that if he has a solid surface he puts his laptop on he has room for a desktop.

No, don't listen to those desktop elitists lol. If you just need to play your games anywhere then take laptop. Myself I prefer ASUS brand.

Uh, you really can, just at a much higher cost. The GTX 780M has higher benchmarks than the Radeon 7970 for desktops as an example, able to run all 2013 games at max settings easily, including Crysis 3 and Metro: Last Light.

Yea you can. You really can. My Samsung laptop (needed the mobility of a laptop for university) was only about $600, and that runs everything in my steam library at medium settings and 30 fps.

I'm obviously looking to build a desktop when I've finished uni, but for now my laptop is fine.

Alienware is now owned by dell... they used to be the main ticket for gaming computers (little over priced) now they are very overpriced for what they do :/ best bet for that kind of cash is to custom build one. if you don't know how, have one built by someone who does... most games don't need much more then a $500-$600 laptop but for top of the line and long lasting (not many upgrades except video-card upgrades) almost anything you get will be awesome.

He can almost certainly get much better bang for his buck, especially considering how much Alienware overcharges. I only did some cursory research and here's what I found within that price range.

Alienware 17 specs ($2000): 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4700MQ processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz), 16GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz, 750GB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200 RPM), NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 770M with 3GB GDDR5, Slot-Loading 8x SuperMulti Drive (DVDR/RW) (Standard)

In contrast:

MSI GT60 ($1939): 4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4700MQ (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache), NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 780M 4,096MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 w/ Optimus™ Technology, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-824P] (Dual Channel Memory (2x8GB SODIMMS)), 128GB Solid State Drive mSATA - [ In Primary Hard Drive Bay ], 1,000GB (1TB) 5400RPM (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s), 6X Blu-Ray Reader + 8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive

Something closer to the Alienware specs-> MSI GT70($1551): 4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4700MQ (2.4GHz - 3.4GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache), NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 770M 3,072MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 w/ Optimus™ Technology, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz [SKU-824P] (Dual Channel Memory (2x8GB SODIMMS)), 750GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s), 6X Blu-Ray Writer/Reader + 8X DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive

In his case, it may be better to grab a console and get office laptop for other stuff than gaming. If it has to be laptop, then I have heard good stuff about Lenovo/Asus. Definitely would not get HP, lately every HP laptop I had in my hands was crap.

E: I would also suggest him not to get a complete highend, cuz imo it is waste to buy laptop for 2k, when you can get a decent one for 1k and when in 2-3 years it won't be enough for new games, get a new one for the leftover 1k, which will be definitely faster than the high end one, he would have gotten for 2k three years earlier.

The only worse choice he could make than alienware would be apple.

anyway $2000 is a lot of money, he can buy a really powerful notebook and play all the titles on highest settings, even in three or four years (thanks, consoles).

one thing you must know that u cant run games at high or ultra even some games on medium when u are on Battery Mode, another issue is temperature, most of the them you will be disturbed with that overheating problem specially in gaming laptops. they are designed so poorly.

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree and yet disagree with your statement. If you set the power settings to not slow the computer down while on battery, you can play the games, just that it will drain your battery quick.

Permalink

battery Mode can't deliver the amount of wattage that the external power supply can, so it's never going to deliver the kind of performance that it can when unplugged

Comment has been collapsed.

From personal experience of being in ownership of 3 different gaming laptops (2 ASUS, 1 MSI), I have zero difficulty refuting this claim. It will deliver it but expect the battery to get pretty warm (hot on older models) and drain fast. Very fast.

The air coming out of the vents on my laptop without a cooling pad is a lot warmer than with the pad.

This seems alright

Specs:

  • Intel Core i7 4700MQ 2.4GHz
  • 8GB DDR3 Memory
  • 1TB HDD + 24GB SSD
  • 14" 1600x900 HD+ Anti-Glare LED Backlit
  • 2GB GeForce GT750M
  • DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)
  • Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230
  • 6-cell Battery
  • Windows 8

Price: 850USD

The GeForce GT750M is pretty much a 660m, maybe a tiny bit worse, I would go with it over the Alienware, ignore the people fighting you to get a desktop, reading through the thread its pretty obvious the laptops the best option. I would not get a gaming laptop myself but they are made for a reason, so yeah...

Honestly most laptops will get pretty hot, even ones designed for gaming, so really its probably on par with an Alienware or such in that way, Lenovo is probably one of the better brands for laptops though.

If you really wanna spend money for the best Clevo is where you want to go though.

As you can see those seem a better option for similar price. I particularly liked the 7370 for price/tech and nice 17'. Would be in my budget if I had money to spend on a new laptop. Which is my last need now. The other problem is that powerful laptops are extremely rare and expensive here.

I've been using an Asus G73 for years now without issue. I can play the vast majority of games at the highest settings easily.

It does occasionally get warm, and the battery life is terrible.

But it's decent (not great, it's big) for portability, and I've been very happy with it with an external mouse and a gamepad.

Tell him g'luck and enjoy whatever he decides to get.
