So uh.... Things are different around here since I was last here. Many people I knew and looked up to have either quit SG or moved on to other things in their life. People cannot debate on something without gouging each other's eyes out, or bringing up drama that doesn't concern the topic at hand. With all that said and done (which I am sure many others have pointed out before me), I have to understand that this community has to, and will, change as time passes, for better or worse, and that I must learn to either adapt with it, or move on. But there is one thing that's been bugging me.

I, myself, have changed. And not in the way you would think.

There was a time when I used to be able to pick up a game, play it at a stretch, and be done with it. That was when I had barely any games to play. Heck, my first game was Claw, my second, Onimusha 3, third, Batman Arkham Asylum, and finally fourth, TF2 (which is what brought me to Steam). During my time here, I not only learnt that I had not played 90% of all the good titles out there, but that I had been looking at the gaming industry through a keyhole. I learnt about the distinction between AAA and Indie games, the existence of bundles, and of course, the significance of Steam in the middle of everything else. As my knowledge grew, so did my library, as well as my laptop's woes. There came a point when I couldn't play anything on the damn thing, and so I decided to play them later, and instead focus on trading up to a PC.

About a month ago, I finally built a good PC, and felt great about it. While I never really built it for gaming, there was definitely a part of me that was thrilled to be able to play ANYTHING that I choose to without anything in my way. So I left my PC on for a few nights, and downloaded over 60 titles. Once done, I said, "Let's play one". Then I kept staring at the list, pondering over what I should play. And as I did, I began to panic.

I was actually struggling to choose one.

After a point, I spaced out, and unconsciously fired up CS:GO instead of any of the new titles. And its not even a game I particularly like. Played a match, got bored, shut it off, and again stared at the list.

This was new to me. How could I not choose? What had happened to all those times when I could just download a game and play it immediately with no regrets? Was I so spoilt for choice that I had lost my drive to play? Was age catching up to me? Or was it something else?

To all those generous souls whose gibs I won , you have my heartfelt gratitude. But I just don't know what has come over me.

Am I unable to choose what to play?
Why am I wary when I will myself to choose any of them?
Do I feel like I am favoring one Steamgifter over the other?
Or do I feel like games have become a task, one that I must carefully plan before undertaking?

I honestly cannot tell. And I think maybe a fresh set of eyes might solve this conundrum I face.

As promised, here is your candy. Might only be for those over 5 though, sorry.

I would also like to mention that I do not want any sort of elitism, drama, hate, propoganda, passive aggressiveness, and any other form of negativity I may have missed, on this post. Learn to love each other instead, it would make it easier for all parties involved.

Hai GR. Thanks for the candy.
^_^
I have the same problem. I have such a huge backlog that I almost don't believe I can ever finish it. It's hard to find the games that I actually want to play and it's even harder to find the time to finish it. The only thing close to a solution I've find is by picking my favourite genre when I have time, then play other games for a short amount of time when I don't.

Google around "The Paradox of Choice". I am in a similar situation, although I dont know how long (years) you played or the amount of it. My friends advice is to select a few games and put on favorite, then try them out. Havent worked for me though.

I am mostly playing cooperative mp games with my friends, but more for the social aspect than actually wanting to play it. Maybe you could try the same.

Could you list the games? I'm also leaning towards this, but playing together and playing coop is too much of a difference - I would be so happy to find a game when we need to work together, but it's not as punishing as for example Don't Starve Together is (or csgo, as someone having a bad day can turn that game so unfun)

Right now we just started "The Division", it was on sale for 15 bucks on amazon, you could find it for a similar price on shady cd key sites. Also just got 7 Days To Die but havent tried it yet. We were also playing Evolve but I got tired of it, still its a interesting game, although running around feels boring sometimes. Smash+Grab while its PVP (there were bots) was excellent but unfortunately the devs closed down and the servers will eventually go offline.

Have you ever tried a game like Terraria\Starbound? May not be your cup of tea, but its great fun and have lots to do. Saints Row 3 and 4 with 2 people is awesome, although some folks dont like the "silly" story. Dead Rising 2 and 3 is also 2 people only, and I had a blast on them. Renegade Ops is great for some mindless shooting. Borderlands 2 is highly acclaimed, if you are into FPS and loot. Also in the loot aspect, but you have to grind ALOT is warframe, I like the amount of weapons\characters and how you can customize them, but for some folks its too much. Payday 2 is also grindy, but good fun in a while. If you dont like levels or grind, the classic Left 4 Dead is the way to go.

While I didnt enjoy Killing Floor 2 or Vermintide, there are plenty of people who swear by it and have provided countless hours of entertainment for a group of players.

Starbound is a common target to buy on a sale for us, but Terraria didn't really make the cut for others (I love it :D )mostly the problem is that at least 4 people multi would be good. We tried Left 4 Dead and was pretty fun - my personal problem is that my computer is not really up to most of the games you said - like Division, 7 days to die, Evolve, even Rust is out of my reach :\ I tried the beta? of Vermintide, that would be great tbh (melee left 4 dead) but again, I think none of us have it :D

I am amazed how much content Terraria have. Its great on mp, its a pity your friends werent into it, if they didnt like it I dont think they will enjoy starbound...

Division and Evolve are indeed heavy, unfortunately, but I think 7 days isnt, at least the minimum requirements are reasonable.

I havent played in a while so I dont know how its faring now, but Rift was great, I played solo mostly but I think it could be a great game for friends, if they are into MMOs. I really liked the features of it.

While Sonic Racing and Speedrunners are competitive, they are great games to curse your friends with, and they are light on the pc requirements side, cheap too on sales.

And here is a good solution for games your friends dont own: Buy it for them!

400+ hours in terraria and I'm not even past the mecha bosses :D

Buying games is problematic - I take my gamble with a monthly HB but other than that I don't go above BTA, and I almost never buy games on Steam, not even for myself. Maybe later, with a stable job it won't be a problem, but currently is (and each of us is a little too careful about picking games, and some other problems that prevents buying games without actually trying it)

The problem of being picky is not having anything to play though :p Well, its a pity. I think all the games I listed minus Division and Killing Floor 2 have good prices on sales.

I just though of another game for 4 player fun: Dead Island. Although I think its the least fun from the ones I mentioned, it can still provide enjoyment, and its cheap now.

i'm in the same position than you, but ehh i can recommend you a game that i just buyed this halloween sales.

Ryse:son of rome fuck this game it's awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

you should play it if you have a controller for PC really!!!! do it.

it's a diferent game than all of the "new" games that are or shooter or action games where you jump and press X button forever.
it's just diferent :) like a film whit action but where you participe killing etc.....

people say the combat it's repetitive, it's true and not true, all depend in how you want to play the game. inside that repetitive combat there's a huge amount of variety depending on how you want to kill them.

believe me, buy this game right now you don't will regret it!!!

It's really common, which is why I try to finish a game before starting another now. One game I have been playing on ps3 since march, and still not finished, but don't play anything else on the console. Also sometimes just default to a couple of games that I'll never finish like binding of Isaac.

Don't try to pick a specific game to play. First, decide what genre you want to play, then pick one within the genre.

If that approach also doesn't work, chances are you're not in the mood for video games at all.

Yeah when my library got big I felt a similar feeling. I have been gravitating towards shorter games so that I can play through them quickly since I lose interest kind of quick and don't have too much time. I have also become a bit of an achievement hunter, which makes me less likely to play games where I can't get all the achievements. My old computer also limits what I can play, so I play a lot of indie games and free games online, but those games are perfect for me. Short and most of which are fun, but no attachment like I need to beat the game.

I still play a decent amount of Hearthstone and Overwatch to satisfy my multiplayer/competitive needs, and waiting for the new Pokemon to come out. I also prefer watching anime and TV shows more than most things.

My advice would be to play any game and if you don't like it, drop it. Eventually you will get addicted to a game and have a blast playing it.

Welcome back ^_^

I know that feeling.. my library turned suddenly huge when I discovered the existence of bundles.. I'm now sitting on 77% of my games unplayed. But I'm working on it :)

If you can't choose, you use someone/something else choose for you; there are several sites out there who can do this.

I have come up with a lot-of-time-consuming solution that requires me to list all my games on a spreadsheet, add other info and give those info points to finally have all games ranked. Of course I can play whatever I feel to, even if it's not at the top.

This was before I joined the BackLog Assassins ExtraOrdinaire.
They set up a new theme each month and I'm playing mainly those, like in a meta-game.

This is the recruitment thread;
This is the relative site;
This is my page on said site. You can also see a table with points attribution of my ranking system
Have a look and get an idea of what's there and if it can be useful to you :)

You're suffering from analysis paralysis.

It can be daunting to look at a list of 60 options and pick one, so you just default back to TF2.
Try to instead break down the decision into simple questions involving only a few options. Start by breaking your library up into sections, such as by Genre.
Then start by asking yourself a question like:
"Do I want to play solo or multi-player?"
Then follow up with, e.g.
"Do I want to play a game that's action-heavy or that's story-driven?"
"Do I want more action, or do I want to pace myself and think things through?"
"Darksiders or Devil May Cry?"

note: this is just a sample decision tree. there are plenty of other ways to do it, based on your preferences

Funny thing is, I am done playing both DMC games, and that's where I got stuck. But yeah, this should probably be my solution.

I just took a quick look at your library and made a decision tree in about 30 seconds. Personally, my library has 18 categories and the goal is to narrow it down to one of those categories as quickly as possible. Thereafter, it's usually fairly simple to pick one.
just need to pick one.
For example, if I end up choosing Stealth, it's then a question of Batman, Dues Ex, Hitman or Thief. And I play whichever game is next in that series.
If I'd chosen Open-World, it'd be Fallout, GTA or Just Cause. Then it's whatever's next in that series
there are other categories that have significantly more choices, but you get the idea

This looks like a really useful solution - I also have a (diferent) escape game, and similarly, if the picked game tends to be disappointing, or just different that I wanted, I tend to just quit it (even though it's usually nice... for another time) and still go to the usual game :|
