Ola

My friends are all booked for tonight so I decided to catch up on some reading. Made me wonder if you guys listen to music while reading. Feel free to share your reading music and thoughts on the matter :-----)

What I listened to the last 2 times:

EDIT:
It's seems that I've created my first topic on my cakeday without my own knowledge :p so here is another one:

Do you put on music while reading a book? (most of the time)

Yes
Sometimes, when I feel like it
Reading is for peasants, all I do is play games!... and read my backlog

Ola!
Sometimes, when I feel like it.
But, more importantly, I don't listen to music when I have a headache or such, that already breaks my concentration enough

I find it too distracting to listen to music while I'm reading (or working). I can only do it if the music has no words.

If I'm in a place where there's some noise that's really distracting then I'll listen to various instrumentals. Kind of like the great album you linked, though what I end up listening to is usually random "[insert feeling here] instrumental."
But usually I don't like reading with music because when what I'm listening to doesn't match up in tone/feeling with what I'm reading, I end up trying to skip until I find a more fitting song, which ends up just being way more distracting in the end.
Though I will say - I read a suspense novel with some dramatic instrumental stuff once, and it did really heighten the experience for me.
Just depends on my surroundings and how immersed I already am in the book, I guess.

Aaaah you just gave me a great idea for a future present!

Pick a book for someone, read it yourself and create a tracklist to accompany it :D It'll take you some time for sure but if done right I think you can create something beautifull and enhance the experience (as you said). When I get around to it, I'll be certain to post the results on SG ^^
Really, THANK YOU :D!

Ohhhh, that's genius! Glad I had a part in such a great idea (and also kinda disappointed I didn't think of it sooner, haha).
I look forward to your results! I'll have to try making one at some point too. :D

I remember watching something on BBC many years ago (I believe it was about how people are wired, how they achieve their results and so on), where they (sort of) tested and mentioned that extroverts learn/focus best when they keep getting stimuli (such as noisy surroundings, music), while introverts learn/concentrate better when it is silent.

It is of course a bit of a simplification because no one is 100% extrovert or introvert. E.g., if I am reading something when music is playing, I just end up mentally shutting it out entirely or reducing it to a vague and non-intrusive background sound. So I do prefer silence. But if that is not possible, I can normally still filter out what I find bothersome and do fine with some sounds around me. So the introvert/extrovert theory is not entirely holding up ;)

Haha just the other day we were discussing the inluence of having a more introvert/ extrovert personality on developping eating disorders. What a coincidence ^^ That sure is an interesting note. Does the material you're reading influence the degree in which you're able to shut out noise?
Thank you for your input!

I sleep with my stereo on. It never gets turned off. I can't sleep without it. So yea, I guess that means that I read with it on too.

Hmm, would you wake up if somebody turned the stereo of while you're asleep?

I myself often play audiobooks or serie episodes with a lot of dialogue when trying to fall asleep. I use a program to make my laptop shut down after 30-60 minutes though ^^

I've never had anyone do that but the morning show on the radio station I listen to gets a bit loud because they have two deejays and a lot of sound effects that they use and I can usually sleep through their noise. I live alone so I would probably crap my pants if I woke to someone turning up the stereo though. πŸ˜‚

What do you read at the moment? I love reading since I've been a little child, the most I like fantasy and thriller.
At the moment I'm reading "Das Lied der KrΓ€hen", the english title is "Glory or Grave", from Leigh Bardugo. I can highly recommend this πŸ™‚

Haha thank you, I had no idea! This is the first topic I've ever created on SG and it just happens to be on my cakeday ^^

I'm reading 'the wheel of time' series at the moment and really loving it so far :D It's a 13 book fantasy series that got recommended to me by a friend. We're like reading it with 5 people now, what only makes it more fun since it's a huge universe and we get to discuss everything.
Added the title to my reading list! :D Will be a while before I get to it though haha, still have 12/13 books to go.

What're you reading? :)
If I have a song stuck in my head or my brain won't shut up or there's a million distractions I'll listen to quiet instrumental music. Studio Ghibli is a favourite. Though often I'll just listen to some ambient noise, usually Harry Potter or Game of Thrones related.

p.s. Happy cake upside-down jellyfish day!

I'm reading the 'wheel of time' series atm, it's a 13 book fantasy series. If you're into the genre I can't recommend it enough :D It just has everything, great descriptions, humor, an epic lore, likeable characters,... If you're into harry potter or GOT you'll probably enjoy this too (can speak from own experience :D)
Damn Studio Ghibli sure contributed to some awesome movies. Will dive deeper into those ambient noises for sure, first glimpse looks really promising. Almost can't wait to read some more haha.

Thank you for your contribution!

Ooh nice, I'm glad you enjoy it! I've considered starting the series a few times but I've heard such mixed things (and more recently more negative). But considering I love fantasy and it has Brandon Sanderson, should really give it a go and see for myself. You made me interested again, thanks. :) Ahh there's so many books to read!!

And yeah I love that site for ambient noises because I can customise the levels myself, but there's some great ambient ones on youtube as well.

I prefer no music, I can be easily distracted. Sometimes though if I read something which doesn't need too much effort I could listen to some music though.

Not always, since usually most of my reading is done when I turn in for the night. However, sometimes I like to listen to music that is evocative of what I am reading. For instance right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet series of military hard SF so I listen to things like this:
Epic Space Music Mix

and this:Stellaris Utopia OST

oh and this: Battlestar Galactica OST all seasons

Somebody else gave me the idea to make a fitting tracklist to accompany a book (as a gift). Would you be happy with such a present?

Not really into SF books, but that stellaris utopia ost sure sounds epic :D and I LOVED battlestar galactica!

Thank you for your time!

Don't you think that the reading gets more intense if you stimulate the atmosphere by picking the right music for the book? Even if you don't actively listen to it.

I often tried but I am having my probems with it.
This may sound strange or picky but the main problem ist hat no soundtrack is made for the book and the tempo I am reading. Let's say I read about a mistery scene during the night and I am listening to a track wich fits it pretty well. Than at some point I reach a happy scene in the book but the music is still stuck in that dark mysterious atmosphere. Hope people can follow track of what I am talking about. I'd need like a dynamic soundtrack wich keeps track of what mood of music I need at the very moment.

Seems to me that you're one of the people that just stays aware of the music all the time. For me a tracklist suiting the genre will do since I really get drawn into a book and just need the music to contribute a bit to the general atmosphere. I totally can imagine it being off putting though when you're constantly aware of it though :D

Thanks for taking the time!

Yes for Fennesz!! And Tim Hecker is brilliant. Harmony in Ultraviolet is probably my favourite of his, although ambient music can paradoxically get almost too intense as an accompaniment to reading at times. Case in point: Whitecaps of White Noise II gives me massive chills every time I put it on; it is actually physically demanding to listen to.

No music. I tend to tune it out when I read and have no clue what I have been listening too so it is a waste. Usually read in the back room with no background noise, although very occasionally I will put the tv on. Not sure why..maybe it is the sound of others talking in the background that I enjoy. Quite like reading a paper or a book at a cafe too :)

I personally preffer silence while reading since I can concentrate better, if there's music (or noise in general) it disturbs my reading time.

Mainly fantasy / science fiction. I buy them at Downpour. Currently listening to The New Space Opera 2. (And going there now, of course there's a Black Friday sale. Will have to look at that. Not enough time to look at all the Black Friday sales.)

Well when I read books(which is 99% of the time discworld) I go with:

  1. Vagabond album by Adrian von Ziegler
  2. Skyrim OST
  3. Other ambient/cinematic music.
