4:30am here, and I could really use some sleep, so let's just say I'll paste here some parts of the article:

Welcome to the Adventure
The world of video game design is a mysterious one. What really happens behind the closed doors of a development studio is often unknown, unappreciated, or misunderstood. And the bigger the studio, the more tightly shut its door tends to be. With this project, we're taking that door off its hinges and inviting you into the world of Double Fine Productions, the first major studio to fully finance their next game with a Kickstarter campaign and develop it in the public eye.

Founded in 2000 by industry veteran Tim Schafer (Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango), the San Francisco-based company has established itself as a unique creative force with critically-acclaimed titles such as Pyschonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade, Once Upon a Monster, and Double Fine Happy Action Theater. This year, you'll be given a front-row seat as they revisit Tim's design roots and create a brand-new, downloadable "Point-and-Click" graphic adventure game for the modern age.

About the Project
Over a six-to-eight month period, a small team under Tim Schafer's supervision will develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure utilizing modern touch technology. Where it goes from there will unfold in real time for all the backers to see.

2 Player Productions will be documenting the creative process and releasing monthly video updates exclusively to the Kickstarter backers. This documentary series will strive to make the viewer as much a part of the process as possible by showing a game grow from start to finish, with all the passion, humor, and heartbreak that happens along the way. Double Fine is committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived.

There will be a private online community set up for the backers to discuss the project with the devs and submit their thoughts and feelings about the game's content and direction, sometimes even voting on decisions when the dev team can't decide. Backers will also have access to help test the game once a beta is available. Once the game is finished, backers will receive the completed version in the available format of their choice.

...and, most importantly...
Happy bunny. <3

...oh, and by the way, since we're not on random-gaming-forum-name.com...

Q: How will I get the game?

A: Steam codes will be delivered to all backers.

Q: How do I get access to the beta?

A: On Steam. Isn’t Steam the best?!

Estimated Delivery: Oct 2012

Already 90k, it's going incredibly fast. I'll prolly just be doing 15$, but this is all so exciting. A new Schafer adventure game and possibly a sequel to Psychonauts in a couple of years. Holy shit.

I read an article in December Game Informer about this game. Looks really good, and I'm really interested in seeing what comes of it. I quite enjoy the point-and-click genre.

First time I've backed a kickstarter. It's going to be fully funded in another hour or so at this rate!

Why do we need publisher's again...?

For the DRM, of course.

Forgetting that Valve will most likely be the publisher and that Steam is (admittedly a very nice piece of) DRM?

What I said exactly. That's what the publisher is for, to put the DRM in.

I didn't forget about Valve. They are not publishing the game. Is every game on Steam published by Valve in your mind?

$15 is more money than I've put into a single game for a couple of years now (excluding piecemeal for "F2P" MMO's, where I got up to $25 for a single game). I vowed to reduce my video game spending because I don't play most of those I buy, so I'm taking my time making this $15 commitment. Still there's a good chance I will give in.

Your not just buying a video game, your supporting the game studio completely. No money is going to EA or Activision. Plus its going to be awesome to watch the making of something you helped make happen (even if your part was really small). Could change the game industry for good.

I know, I know. It's not like I paid nothing. $1 is something. It's not like they really need my money. I'm sure they'd be a lot over budget.

I agree that this could change the game industry. There are quite a few straggling developers who could get decent funding this way, and if that ends working well, it might end up working even for AAA projects. The problem is if the devs won't get the project finished (which I'm sure will happen in many cases) and backers start getting disillusioned.

Edit: Gave in and pledged my $15. That was after I saw the video. I initially didn't realise there was a video on the main page, but if the documentary of development is anywhere near that great it's worth $15 just to watch it. This would combine two of my great passions: buying videos I don't watch and video games I don't play.

Aren't that video for $30?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Not exactly: every backer contributing $15 or more will be able to see the videos (online, I guess), while $30+ backers will be able to download the HD version.

Schafer's company have quite a brilliant imagination, they just can't seem to make it into mainstream. Though trouble might be with limiting ports (PS3 exclusives and such) and mostly for youger audience.
But I hope this works out.

Shame about the payment limits. Would have supported this. Kickstart could really use going more global and getting multiple payment methods. Anyway, nice to see that the goal is already met. Next stop, ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Can't wait for that documentary, so curious to see what's going on at Double Fine. I'm not a personal fan of point-and-click adventure, so the game isn't so interesting to me. Although I almost payed just because it's Shafer. Anyway, I will definetely back Psychonauts 2, should he use a fundraiser for that.

I've got to ask... how is that even remotely the most important thing? Would you seriously not want this game if it wasn't on Steam?
