So our dog as decided its a great idea to chew up our phone cable under the house. He's down it 3 times in the last 12 hours, does anyone have any solutions? I can't love without my internet haha and it's frustrating having to get under the house and fix the wiring that frequently. Sorry no ga this time.

Train your dog and stop letting your dog train you. :X

In the process of starting to try and do that, he's still young. Only thing is training can take a bit and at this rate ill be having to spend more time fixing the cable than training him lol. Need something short term while we can train him up.

Why would anyone pay for a dog? You can find them everywhere and for free! You just have to look or "borrow" from someone.

Get some hot sauce and cover the cable with it.
I used indonesian Sambal Oelek, which is spicy as hell, though I'm sure other hot sauces will do the trick too

came here to say this, dogs generally hate hot sauce, not for the taste so much as the smell, either way it works.

It's a bit hard as the house is on stilts and 3 out of 4 sides have a decent gap between the house and the ground, what could I use?

Might try some spray, will go to the pet shop and talk to them. He doesn't seem interested in toys, he rarely touches any toy we buy him.

I was thinking about that, just not sure where I could run it, it runs from the back end of 2 phone connections in the wall.

Yeah could do something like that, would just have to work out how to get it inside and run it over doorways and across 3 rooms haha.

I had that same issue actually but with rabbits, they used to chew up everything possible including phone lines, and I couldn't do anything but to get everything out of their reach and provide them with corn cobs because they will chew on them instead of other toxic stuff, but for dogs I think dog chew toys will be better than a corn cob.
Edit: I think the verb is to gnaw stuff for rodents.

Ah yeah, only problem is he rarely touches any toys we buy for him.

Don't get him toys. Get him one of those fake bones made from buffalo or cowskin. Petstores should carry them. Thing is, he wants / needs to chew on something (teeth and molars itch). Those bones, like cables ft well between his teeth and are "chewy". Alternatively, try making a mixture of water (very little bit) with loads of pepper and maybe some spicy sauce. Cover the cable with that?

Fake bone would be best I guess. Something like this: http://www.chewy.com/nylabone-puppy-chew-starter-kit/dp/39341

As Mallymkuns said, he will need to chew on something, so buying him a fake/real bone instead of toys would be good, also can't you teach/train him that playing with cables is bad?

That's the plan, just need a temporary sort of fix until we've managed to teach him.

put wire with a battery, a small voltage will do
the dog would never try it again

although I don't know how much voltage, we do that with horses to stop them from crib biting

man , sprinkle some pepper on the wire , or if you have use pepper spray in the selected area and he will not go there for a long time. if you have like hot souce and you spred it on the wire , he again will not touch that.
You will not harm your dog he will stay away from the area, PS i have a cat......

well, you should probably do something soon, before the dog decides to move on a power cable...

Yeah, I definitely don't want that happening, fortunately the power cables have been ran and secured in a way that's going to be alot harder for him to get.

Yeah, we have a cat that he plays with sometimes, when the cat's around. We're renting though and not allowed another pet.

Run the cable through some metal tubing, electrical conduit or old garden hose.

Thanks, could give it a go but he is a strong dog, I've found a bit of metal tube that he's managed to chew right out of shape and he chewed through a hose as well haha.

Hi, how about try to put ur cable in metal box? Also, may be you have possible (fack my horrible english) attach cable under ceilings ("roof" of rooms is google translate not correct). Third option wich I could assume is going to buy toy for dogs teeths (toys for usual and fighting dogs are different).
Goodluck and have a good day

Yeah I thought about running the cable around a different way so it was out of reach, along the ceiling might be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

There are sprays for those situations, I use a spray called Cleaner Neutralizer or something like that and my cat never goes where the smell is persistent. But now my cat chews on my Ethernet cable so I haven't found the perfect solution yet either.

Wow, that'd be frustrating, I'm probably going to try spray it with something. Hopefully you find a solution soon too.

Or you hang the cable somewhere, or you put some metal or similar covering, or you punish the dog as everyone does when they're puppy. Good dog=biscuit, bad dog=kick in the ass, quite simple.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I've been trying to put it up as high as possible and against the timber to try and make it a bit trickier. I might use some sort of covering and I try punishing him but that doesn't seem to be working. Thanks for your suggestions though.

Dogs chew for a reason, and your young dog is probably teething. Here is a link with useful information about what you should be doing and what you should be avoiding. The "short answer" is to spray the cord with a deterrent, and then teach your dog to avoid the deterrent (by letting him taste it). If you can't buy a spray-on deterrent, Tabasco sauce will work.

Then maybe put some barbed wire around it. He'll probably have learned his lesson when his eye gets poked out. jk

I guess applying something that tastes strong will be the best :p
