So opting out of beta no longer guarantees you aren't forced with Steam's new UI.

[Edit] Since a few days steam killed the old UI fix, forcing everyone to use their new client (till somehow hopefully find a fix).
You can atleast remove the what's new? section by following this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMC3pSVViiA

I have tried the beta - it's more flashy, more slow and full of totally useless information (for me at least). The Metro skin was partially updated, so some functions are working... but I definitely miss the old UI.

I quite like how it looks, but the 'What's New' and removal of a dedicated 'Installed' option are kind of shit.

There's "ready to play" that does that, no? (I don't like it either but haven't spend too much time with it yet)

Why exactly is it obnoxious? Isn't it good to know which games are updated?

Honestly, I don't care to know about every game that updates. If it's something I actively play, I already know it's been updated because it updated. For me, this is just more added clutter I don't need

The new client is ugly as... (:P). Luckily, I made my own backup of the Steam client with the necessary files a month ago and that's the one I'm using right now. I just needed to create a CFG file with a couple of options to avoid the forced update. So far, it's working fine, and with my own personal skin. Much better than using that awful **** ^_^

Can you explain how you locked it down?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, it's very simple:

Open the folder where Steam is installed (where the file "Steam.exe" is) and create a new file and name it "Steam.cfg". The new file must be in the same place as "Steam.exe". Now, open this new file with your text editor (Notepad, Notepad++, etc...) and add these two lines:

BootStrapperInhibitAll=enable
BootStrapperForceSelfUpdate=disable

After that save it. Those options should prevent any update to be downloaded and installed, as long as that file exists in that place. If later you want to update, close the Steam client, delete that file and then open the Steam client and wait a few minutes for the notification about the new update as usual.

If later everything is working fine for you and you want to save some extra space in your Steam folder, then you can delete the "package" folder because this is where the updates are downloaded and after this is not needed anymore.

Cheers, giving that a try. Didn't find reference to this method anywhere else, did you work it out yourself?

No, I just used Google to find a way to stop the updates. Found good information -even from 2013- about the options that can be used in "Steam.cfg" (there are more). I tried the ones related to the updates and they worked. Then the "YouTube fix" appeared (an option that I don't recommend because it's not clean, the result it's just a mix bag of the old and the new files) and also the "Script fix" (a much better solution, in my opinion) and noticed they both do the same thing: They add a "Steam.cfg" file with those two lines to avoid the forced update, confirming what I did was okay.

I haven't closed/reopened steam since this went live... Any way I can lock myself down to this version/cripple updates?

I can't be arsed dealing with all the fixes. I'm too old to handle change for change's sake.

Inset bad HL3 joke here.

But seriously. Imagine that they will put the same effort in creating next hl episode. It would barely run, be ugly as hell and pretty much unplayable.

You can disable community feed in settings > library but it'll not be gone then, just a giant empty block still taking all the space.

I dunno, you came into a thread specifically for people who dislike it, with workarounds on how to avoid it, specifically to toss out some contrary opinions. There's plenty of other threads asking whether people like it.

Smells of oppositional behaviour to me.

I did change the text in op a little (to clean it up) and it first stated i opted out of the beta just to keep the old UI (and more or less i wasn't happy with it) still in the first reply here i did mention i do absolutely hate it (which is true). https://www.steamgifts.com/go/comment/dDoEmyy

Not saying it's your opinion, but usually the likers are often thinking to the dislikers, oh just suck it up, you will learn to live with it, and then whoever developed it will go too see there are people liking it, the rest can suck it up.

Anyway no need to get into an arguement over it, hope you can shake hands on it or just ignore eachother. ;)

Anyone else here who has problems with the key activation popup (window)?

Every time I click on "Games" - "Activate a product on Steam" the window opens up and directly goes in the background. So I have to change to it via taskbar or shortcut ... And that's annoying when activating a handful of keys from bundles.
Tried reinstalling Steam already, but the problem remains -_- But it helped with another problem I had, hehe.

This weekend I went back to play some steam games after having some origin time.
So I found the new library.
After a while I noticed a lot of "new" games in my library. Mmmm.
After another while I noticed they are ftp games or ex ftp games or hidden games that are not hidden any more in my library. Pffff!
After another while I noticed I cannot collapse all the categories at once and I cannot add multiple categories to a game. Wat?
In 2 words: shit happened.

Resume: I'll appreciate short instructions to rollback (will check the fix later)

I'm pretty sure you can add multiple categories to a game...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can indeed. But now it's a command per category. Before you had a list to add multiple categories at the same time. Normally I assign to a game a year and 2-4 other categories, so the new system is pretty inconvenient for me.

Ahh, it feels good to go back to something that's simple and works. I hope Valve either gives us the option to keep the legacy library and/or make the new one modular, like profile pages are.

Oh no not my skins! God I am so angry, it took me bloody forever to get the skins perfect by rubbing the lotion onto them.
Now I'm going to have to start over and start threatening them with the hose again and no one is going to enjoy that.

Ugh, so much work

I was about to try the PixelVision2 skin but after reading their discussions, it seems it doesn't touch the library page, making it kinda useless for this particular problem. Is that true or it does in fact change the Library to something more close to what it was before?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm really, really, REALLY starting to hate the new client even more than ever now. Third time steam crashed when exiting a game now.

Sorry about hijacking the topic about the library, even though my opinion on it still stands firm. Just add that to the client as well now.

I'm just indifferent to it. It's not terrible, it's not great. At least it's better than the Xbox 360 game library.

The only thing that needs fixing was the display of F2P games (which some people may want hidden, but I prefer them to show).

They went ahead and added a bunch of bloat, which is indeed pretty, but takes up tons of disk space and slow everything down.
