How did it go for all of you? I am finding the reality completely different from my pre-initial impressions.

My impression is that you can go in, get given a build from a website or individual, use pcpart picker, order, and presumably live happily ever after. I have seen threads where that seems to happen.

But I have experience buying online and from that PCpp does not make sense as far as I can tell. The number one difference between online retailers in general is shipping costs. You can get an item for 1 cent plus 15 dollars shipping or that same item for 15 dollars and free shipping somewhere else. And it is almost always a huge savings to bundle multiple items in one store to save on shipping. In my experience pcpp seems to never include shipping, so it appears to me it always comes to the more complicated and far more expensive result of buying everything in a different store.

Just now I was ready to do this PC build thing. I got a parts list on reddit, I had reddit look over the build. It looked great. So I went to look into the case. 24$ OK but the selected retailer is saying 15$ to ship, and that does not include taxes, and actually the store page is showing over 30 dollars base price not 24, oh and I think it needs fans purchased separately. So this 24 case was going to be around 70 all said and done. And then it looked like the CPU did not come with a cooler. When people say 600$ build do they really expect that to cost around $1000 all said and done, or am I doing something really wrong?

Well, all I can tell you is that I've recently ordered some new parts to upgrade my old PC, and the price of all the pieces rounded the 285€ (350 USD), and when I finished my order it added the shipping values and it got up to a total of 298€ (366 USD). Since I don't live in the US, I bought it from an European online store which I really like, and their prices are the best I've seen, at least to where I live.
But answering your question, you might be doing something wrong, although I never tried ordering stuff from PCPP or any other US store.

well I don't know what list your going by, but you don't necesarilly need to buy every component new if some your old stuff can work unless you really plan to play at some really demanding settings. if it's price your worried about, if you know anyone who works in a big office building, ask around for some PC parts they almost always have some pretty nice 650 PSUs and fans that they throw away that you might get for free

I recommend ordering parts from Newegg. I've always had good luck with them. My current gaming rig cost me about $700 and eats everything I throw at it.

What about retail stores? There are a few in my area that I like.

Typically, brick and mortar shops are much more expensive and have really terrible quality parts. Best Buy, Radio Shack, Circuit City/ Comp USA (ya Im old), and so on. Added to this, things like sales tax negates any savings you might have seen from buying in person vs having it shipped. Some times you can find great deals either due to price errors, returns, or just an "old" part needs to be clearanced.

Microcenter typically has great deals on CPU+MOBO combos to pull you into the store. For a wide selection, perhaps check out Frys, though they suffer from a pretty hefty markup. The above mentioned stores are, AFAIK, US centric, so your results will vary.

The HARDEST part of building a PC, is picking the right parts which requires you to plan your build and budget correctly. Good Luck.

I agree with the newegg recommendation. I have ordered over 14,000 bucks in parts from newegg in the last two weeks (for work) and built my last two rigs from them as well (except for 1 GPU I got cheaper on amazon). The shipping is always stellar and the prices are hard to beat.

Retail stores are almost always going to be higher than newegg, even with shipping.

I can recommend NewEgg as well, their prices are more than reasonable and comparable to most other places (some cheaper, some more expensive but generally cheaper).

They also have great customer reviews on items and full specs listed for everything I have ever bothered to look at. I have also had a defective item from them and I can tell you, their return setup is great. They mailed me a box to send it back in and everything, didn't cost me a dime except in the gas to drop it off at the post office to return it.

I have built at least 2 of the PC's I have built exclusively from them, the other PCs I have built, can't remember anymore.

Edit: And if you are comparing to retail sites, it will be cheaper most of the time.

So I spent all of last night working at this and got the parts ordered. All\most of the tech sites seem to not have shipping bundle deals, so did not seem to matter all that much. Everything seemed to come with tax, and most came with moderate priced shipping. It averaged out OK, but some had signifigant priced shipping. The sub $600 PC probably got 70 in taxes added and over 20 in shipping, but what can you do?

Pcpartpicker has a tax option where you can input your tax percentage
