Skip Far Cry 2. Far Cry 3 is in a whole league of its own.

No. If you want a Ubisoft game on Steam, you need to buy it from the Steam store. Be careful when trading too.

For the Far Cry 2 experience:
-go down to your local DIY store
-buy a tin of paint and a paintbrush
-return home, open tin of paint
-apply paint brush to paint
-proceed to paint wall
-once ample amount of paint is on wall, sit back and watch it dry

You're exaggerating waaaaay too much. The game is quite good.If it wasn't for all those roadblocks, it would be excellent.

I found it got extremely boring very fast. If anything I think I am underexaggerating.

Far Cry 2 was actually quite enjoyable. There is a bit of slow parts because there was a lot of back and forth in the exact same paths here and there, and there was a lot of the game where it just sent you twice the distance for almost no good reason. The battles were fun, and the mechanics were enjoyable. The difficulty was a little screwy when it came to mortars and rocket launchers, but other than that, the difficulty was never too high or too low for the situation. Better than a lot of games I have seen.

So. Damn. Repetitive. Though.

I liked the ending to Far Cry 2 with the "twist" so to speak. But the rest of the game lacked the fundamentals of what makes an open world game enjoyable. Variety.

Comment has been collapsed.

All Ubisoft games are repetitive when you think about it, ever notice how Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed 4, and Far Cry 3 all have the same side missions? :-D

FarCry 2 was amazing for its time if you ask me, in ways it looked better then 3, and it had some better ideas also like degrading weapons, explodable ammo crates, better fires, and the land seemed more wild, FC3 felt like almost everything was on a path, besides that 3 was better in every respect.

I agree, every Ubisoft game has a good amount of repetition. The Assassin's Creed games are improving (IMO) but they still have that rinse and repeat formula.

Honestly, the degradable weapons in Far Cry 2 were quite game breaking for me. They tried to add a level of realism that ended up being an extremely "gamey" mechanic that would never happen outside of the game. I remember just sitting there firing my AK and suddenly it starts rusting. A little scary!

The environment was the worst part of Far Cry 2 for me. Africa is meant to be wild but yet there were no predators, no small details like birds or snakes, and a distinct lack of vibrance in the colours :S I loved the soundtrack, but I still couldn't feel like I was in a wild environment. Far Cry 3 is also a bit of a disappointment in this way. There are plenty of animal types, but like you said they follow a set path and the crocodiles in particular were disgustingly crammed into the game without much thought at all!

Yeah what I meant was Farcry 2 felt more dense and alive even without the wildlife....which says a lot!

The weapon jamming/degrading was overdone, it needs to be in FC4 if you ask me but less jamming and degrading, it did make battles more intense and dangerous feeling to me, I liked that, I felt like FC2 with that, the pill system and harder enemies made it rally feel like you were trying to survive on a hostile island, FC3 felt more like a joyride on a roller coaster, a set course, fun yeah but lacked the despair feeling I want in a game like this...FC2 was almost depressing feeling, FC3 was colorful and silly in a way. Even though it sounds like I like FC2 better I actually liked 3 better....just some things about 2 I wished stayed in 3.

If FC4 had a couple FC2 features and most of FC3 with a better world it would be amazing.

FC3 of course. FC2 is not a bad game but it gets boring very fast. Get it only if very cheap.

I stopped Far Cry 2 halfway through. I got pretty boring and stealth isn't really viable. I preferred FC3.

Stealth worked better than some games where the point was stealth, and a heck of a lot better than the way Far Cry 1 is on steam. But stealth is only an option and it is viable if you know how to do it.

Take FC3. For me it was the best game of 2012, and the best shooter with elements of RPG for a long time. A long time from 2012 we'll don't get good shooter, since Wolfenstein: The New Order, so buy FC3, seriously. It have a nice story, cool characters, and great feeling, so take it, it's worth it.

FC3. Try FC2 if you prefer Africa to tropical islands and a better plot.

Finished Far Cry 3 and now I'm playing Far Cry 2...

FC2 requires alot of modding to be enjoyable, there's almost no color and everything is too dark, requires alot of tweaking, mouse in menus is awfully slow compared to the 3D sensitivity and if your machine can run it on ultra with 30-45 fps you'll have mouse lag issues, so you'll need at least 60 in order to have responsive input.

Cars are painfully slow and you rely on them alot because you can barely run at the beginning.

So, go for Far Cry 3 if you want a better vanilla experience from the Far Cry series.

But FC3 also has some issues but mostly on online modes... MP is mostly unplayable because of infinite issues with the menus and starting the actual game, then there's co-op which is playable but you'll find serval annoying issues with it along the way.

Go with Far Cry 3, Far Cry 2 has lots of issues (last I've heard).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Far Cry 2 has issues requiring a patched winhttp.dll on windows 7 for multiplayer, but at least it has a server browser. The story is crap but the gameplay feels different from Far Cry 3 in that there aren't only carnivorous animals everywhere. Stealth is crap, either sniper everyone or go home, which is where Far Cry 3 does a much better job. The main character in Far Cry 3 will make you want to kill yourself and stop playing simply because he is such a douche even at the end of the game. Multiplayer in Far Cry 3 is even more dead Far Cry 2's last time I checked because there are no server browsers and half the time "switching hosts" just disconnects everyone. Shame, because the map editor could be put to good use.

far cry 3 -> normal gameplay, but decent story and more thoughtful additions such as crafting and stuff
both not so decent pc ports tho

My problem with FC2 is the way guns work. Enemies wear armored t-shirts and invisible helmets. Besides the constant spawning of killed enemies in the checkpoints is annoying
