Today I bought a KSP RU/CIS gift from G2A.
I've connected to a Russian VPN and claimed the gift. Now it's in my inventory, but I can't activate it, because it's saying that I can't do it in my country.
I have a russian IP on checkmyip.com, so I just don't know whats the problem.
I've disabled the Steam Guard too.

Well, you're from Poland and it looks to me like you're trying to cheat Steam and it doesn't let you.

Seems fine to me.

Steam have tightened up rules abt region locked games.

i thought it was only for purchasing thing in store to get better discount, (because i think its allowed to use it as long you don't buy thing)

It's been updated:

You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, we may terminate your access to your Account.

It will take about 45-60 minutes to code a loop, and about 10-30 days to execute it on a high-end home PC, about 5-10 hours using cloud computing. I wouldn't risk loosing everything just to get one game cheaper. Probably their code just shows up potential cheaters and than someone by hard looks at the suspicious logs and decides to ban or not to ban. That's why it takes a long time before offence and ban.

And I know that there were people banned for using VPN just for game activation. So yeah, it sucks to be you.

I've used a VPN to change my IP to a Russian one, but it still didn't work.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not the IP they look out for but what you gave as your place of residence. You can change it if you prove them you moved to Russia/CIS territory with official papers, but otherwise you can fake any IP, in Steam your region will be Poland.
They also used to check the address on the bank card you gave as payment info to filter out VPN users, so even if it worked previously, it was partly just luck.

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if you could find a way to activate it you would need a Russian IP to play it,as it is also play locked now to there region it is meant for, because of people like you who still tried to buy it cheaper and activate it.

Your fault for buying a locked game, next time check before you buy something.

As far as showing a Russian IP i am willing to bet that steam has blocked that ip seeing how it is tied to VPN and i also assume your using a free service so you do not get a unique IP you get a shared one in most cases so it is easy to block.

You should of had a V-8 before buying games, this is your V-8 moment.Learn from it and try trade it for a row copy or any other game you may want that you can actually play.

Permalink

I knew that it was locked.
It was just so much cheaper.
I did succesfully activate Cities Skylines before.
And I know it's illegall.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

but the thing is the system has changed. your current ip doesn't matter anymore. store region of your account is the thing what matters. you need to send a ticket to change it afaik. and they won't change it just for you to activate a russian copy.

Oh well, that makes sense.

So I need to just hax Gaben's servers and change the country my account is bind to.
eh

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well you gambled on it,just try trading it even if it is not for the same game a game you can play is better then one you can not.

If you want cheaper games keys are more of risk but not always region locked like some from Nuuvem

It's not "illegal", it's against the ToS

Permalink

Steam changed it's system a while ago. What IP you log from doesn't matter anymore. Your account is bind to country you registered it from, so if you log in from russian IP, brazillian IP or US IP it will still remain Polish account, and on Polish account you cannot activate other regions gifts.

Just imagine: Everybody in this world wants profit, and they want to maximize it, so they use region locks. I wonder if that EU law comes in, will it affect Steam? I mean no region restrictions for us, so EUROPEAN PC STEAM MASTER RACE emerge! BTW While I did buy Steam things from Russia, they were all ROW, so I didn't needed any kind of VPN ever. I even abused that 4-packs spawn ROW copies bug, but I'd never risk my Steam account for a stupid game, which must be activated by VPN. I'd recommend you to trade, or more importantly, give it away. It'd boost your level as hell, since it wasn't bundled before.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I know.
But I could trade this for some other game or maybe trading cards.
What will I get from my level on steamgifts?
And what does ROW mean?

EDIT: okay, I see whats the level for.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

ROW copies mean Rest of the World. ROW copies are activatable anywhere, except RU/CIS. If you have a russian friend, maybe he will buy KSP from you. I wouldn't trade it for trading cards, because their price is not always the same. I'd trade it for keys, OR contact the seller to get my money back, and give them back the game. If all else fails, you can just put it on SteamTrades with a discounted price, where you write, why is the discounted price, so noone will think that you want to scam them. But if it's from G2A or other shady sites, I'd try to get my money back, because they can revoke the game anytime.

I guess so. Once I read it somewhere, that WW is the best, since it can be activated anywhere, and comes ROW, which is rest of the world, so AFAIK it can't be activated in RU/CIS.

well, i never saw a WW (i guess it stands for worldwide?) tag so far and i'm pretty sure ROW copies can be activated anywhere. including RU/CIS.

Yes it stands for WorldWide, and it isn't common, because only game keys are tagged as WW mostly. Sorry if I have wrong info about ROW activatability, but since Steam kiled trading, it doesn't matter anymore I guess :D

VPN's (many) aren't fool proof. I use VPN's every single day because I live in China. Sometimes I connect to some random country, and can still see at the bottom of my Google search results "your current location is" with my exact real town listed on it. Valve knows you're using a VPN this time and won't acivate the game.

I think that Google uses a bit different way to get your localization, but I'm not sure.

That might be true too, but I think that zelghadis' comment is even true-er
