According to steam reviews you're not missing much. Everyone praises graphics but complains that story is not good and that the game is very linear.

Depends. It is a tactical combat simulator that puts every ounce of gameplay into the combat mechanics, and loses many other JRPG tropes (like city hubs for shops). Also, the story is confusing until you get to the end and read all the data logs. (The story is actually good and the lore is astounding, but the dramaturgy is just god awful, so it has troubles actually telling it. Big troubles.)

I would advise watching a speedrun on it: LewdDolphin and MLSTRM are streamers who have a few runs available usually on their Twitch past broadcasts. It cuts out most story spoilers and shows you advanced combat tactics to give some feeling on the depths it may go down to. if you like the combat mechanics there, then you'll probably like the game too.

According to the Steam reviews, every single Final Fantasy besides VII is a piece of garbage. The reason I stopped entering the FFVI forums was every damn person did nothing but bitching about how bad the game is, how bad the port is, and how terrible is Square for remastering VII even though half of the VII forums were bitching about why doesn't Square remastering VII too.

FF III & IV are sweet, even if they're ports. I don't regret buying and playing them :D

Damn you've got almost 250 hours in it.

Is it true that the game is linear and that there's almost no exploration?

It is as linear as all other FFs, but this time they literally show you the corridor and cut out the world maps.
So, in a sense, yes, it does give you the feeling of linearity. Only one open world chapter is there, but that also has all the side-quests (similar to the hunting missions in FFXII), so it can make up more than 50% of the game time. It also has its fair share of exploration, mostly in the form of chocobo riding treasure hunt.
But the real strength is the combat. It is often accused of being "Press X to win", but in reality it is the most complex combat system in an FF, rivalling Tactics and somewhat surpassing X-2. (And also the first FF where disabling spells such as slow or stop not only actually work on enemies, but the role that does these spells is one of the most useful ones.)

I also have to add that the sequel, XIII-2 added back most of the missing standard JRPG stuff (city hubs, world map, 99 levels instead of 5, and even a pokémon mechanic). The third one is more of an open world JRPG/hack & slash hybrid though.

I'd say it is a game probably not for everyone, but for me, it is my second favourite Final Fantasy after VI.
And when I get a new video card in May (or my next rig in 2017), that 250 hours will hopefully multiply. :)

I don't remember X-2's battle system being particularly complex. It was your usual ATB with jobs like FFV, where focusing on speed and raw attack power destroys anything that isn't a hidden boss effortlessly. I found X's battle system way more interesting (though I still liked X-2).

I'd have to agree- X-2 seemed really complex when you first started, but ended up being fairly straightforward once you got used to it.

I don't get the fondness for that game, of all of them, really.
Though, the remake of it is looking really, really good so far :X

FF is a good series. Sure, not as imaginative as its title or some of its fans make it out to be, but it really is a good series of JRPGs. And FFVII is a good game too, but nowhere near the masterpiece many of its fans like to sell it as. Just most people met it first due to the insane Western marketing Square made befire the release, and as a general rule, it can be said that the FF almost everyone ranks as their "best" is the one they played for the first time.

Early on, it was a straightforward series that compared poorly (in terms of depth) to more complex titles like Chrono Trigger, Lunar, Secret of Mana. But, by way of being straightforward, it was easily accessible and simply enjoyable- basically an RPGMaker game before they existed.

Then, the FF games started pushing cinematics and 3D graphics, and started trying more and more elaborate combat systems [to varying degrees of success]. So they've become fairly distinct in their own right.

I certainly wouldn't consider them the height of RPG gaming (either from a story-driven or tactical-gameplay viewpoint), but I've yet to find a FF game that doesn't scratch that particular classic-JRPG-feel itch, and do so in its very specific, very well-polished way. So, I enjoy them- a lot.

But at least as far as the first 12 non-online games went, the story components have always been fairly threadbare and simplistic [though I do love the atmosphere of X, that was well done in so many parts].

So you emphasizing how good FFXIII's combat system is, really emphasizes the beet components of the series [other than the cinematics and graphics, but I don't think they'll ever let us down there].

Also- there is clearly only ONE 'best' Final Fantasy Game. ;)

I don't know, I never considered the combat mechanics in any FF before XIII that deep. I mean there's difficult to find a game in the core series where you need anything outside Attack, some form of healing, and maybe a few elemental attack spells. The biggest variety usually comes from how you exchange Attack to some character-specific ability or an extension (like the special abilities in FFVI or the ways to keep yourself in constant limit brake mode in FFVIII), but even most bosses could be beaten with a hold-one-button strategy. And it is mostly the fastest strategy to boot…
The thing that is different in XIII that after a while using this tactic will make battles increasingly longer, and after a point, impossible. Whereas a good loadout in pre-made roles and constantly adapting to the situation (in extreme cases two-three times in ten seconds) can let you win against post-game superbosses on level 3 (of 5). The trick is that learning the mechanics to this degree can take time, because you cannot cheese the game with overpowered items that you acquire somehow early. It is a lot more dependant on player skills and preparation.

I was wondering about this too. There are so many of them on my wishlist section.
Although it's on my wishlist, I won't enter any of them nor buy it because it doesn't have a Linux version. (yet? I think it's gonna take a while haha)
