Meh.
Humble Reheated 11, eh?

I've posted this above as a reply to adam1224 but I'm copying the comment here for visibility and so Lilly is notified and can update the OP with the relevant information.

Another update from Humble support. I asked them if they could send me the key anyway to try if it still worked, since the game seems to still be downloadable and playable despite being removed from Steam (like many other games) acknowledging that if the key didn't work (had been revoked) I wouldn't request a replacement since it was doubtful they could provide one:

Thanks so much for your patience while we investigated the issue at hand further. After some digging, you are likely right that unless the depots for the game have been removed entirely from Steam's database, the game may be downloadable, and keys may grant access to the title. I'm sorry for the misinformation I provided!
.
Unfortunately, I am unable to provide an individual key for this title or a replacement key for this as we do not have them on hand anymore and cannot obtain additional keys from the developer due to the ban in question. If the key was revealed before the removal on the download page, this is the only instance where I could find that old key and provide it.

So, two points here:

  1. Humble apparently "destroyed" (or mishandled) all unrevealed Steam keys O_o
  2. If you revealed your key before they removed it from the download page, you might be able to recover it if you contact support.

That's because Humble doesn't actually assign you a key until you reveal it.

That still means that someone "lost" or "misplaced" the database with the pool of keys that were assigned when you revealed them.

I'd be inclined to think unused keys were sent back to the dev, possibly at his request.

Happy cake day! That's a possibility, I doubt it myself (but it's my personal feeling).

Guess I know how I'm spending this evening... a couple hundred keys to reveal and save...

Not revealing your keys is negligence. 🤗

That is the confirmation that they have stolen our keys directly. They will probably sell them on the grey market for an extra profit.

I had an unrevealed key too :(

Happy cake day.

Classic Humble. I really do not understand how there habe not been any big lawsuits against them in the US… the rest of the world they will always say fuck you and close your account but someone with a good lawjer us-based should probably be able to get them for things like these.
They took my key too although I must admit that I did not remember having it until I read this thread here, somehow I never revealed this bundle back in the day.

There is a reasonable amount of time a business could expect to wait for you to redeem a gift code. Five years is clearly beyond that. In what universe do you expect a court to find Humble at fault for you failing to realize you had an unredeemed gift code for five years? Keep in mind that the Humble ToS, which is a binding legal document that you were required to agree to before purchasing the bundle, states very clearly that it is your responsibility to activate or download products within a reasonable period (section 2(i) of the terms of service).

What is a "reasonable period" in this case?

Terms of service and similar documents very much aren't legally binding in many parts of the world regardless of any wording to that effect they may include in order to make people think that they are.

I suppose it differs for countries but there is a thing called "distance contract". Mostly used by internet shops and other places. Once you press "buy" you automatically "form" a contract with whoever sold you something. So technically if they have all of their documents in order, their ToS could be used as grounds for contract which you agree to when buying something from them. Theoretically you shouldn't be able to buy anything just out of thin air anyway. There is always something to agree to or ToS or similar rules that state that when buying you agree to the rules (mostly of course used by the vendor not to get fucked by malicious buyers, but of course to protect you as consumer to get whatever you bought)

I know because I've worked quit a bit with procurements and while for a physical/natural persons it does not matter in 99% cases, it is relevant to businesses for when you need invoices or whatever. But they still have the practice in place and in my country (within Europe) we have a specific law which states how and when a distance contract between two parties is in force .

Not here defending humble or whatever. But just pointing out that yes - such documents can and are used as legally binding. So very much advisable to be sure where you buy something and what's in their rules. Whether Humbles ToS makes sense and whether their documentation works as distance contract is another topic altogether though

I'm not saying they can't be legally binding just that they aren't inherently so just because they sate as such. The companies (or their legal teams) writing these documents know this isn't always the case and still choose to include such statements in the hopes that people won't challenge them on it when there actually is an issue.

That the keys may not work anymore is not the point. If that was they case and they answered „well you had all the time and the world and we no longer can guarantee validity“ that would be frustating but ok. But actively taking them from users digital library is a whole other thing in my opinion.

That ToS might do you some good in the USA but good luck with that in Europe.
EU law > ToS

This is my story.
First thing, I'm from EU and sorry for some english mistakes.
I'll keep it short. When they suspended my account, I still had 1 choice credit left, so I contacted the support, but they keep closing my ticket without responding.
So after a while I filed a complaint at Better Business Bureau, an US consumer association, saying that even if I did wrong with their ToS, they couldn't rob me of that credit because I paid for it, and that's a theft under EU and US law. And so after a month of emails they didn't reactivate my account, but gave me back the money equivalent of that credit.
