Hi everyone,

There was a new feature recently added to the site, that allows moderators to view a log of all feedback and key changes corresponding to each giveaway winner. For users, this will simplify "Request New Winner" tickets when the winner is unresponsive. In the past you would need to submit screenshots and information to prove you attempted to contact the winner over one week ago. Now, that is no longer necessary when you send a key or gift link through SG. You can just click the "Send Key" button as usual and that's it. We can quickly refer to the log and confirm how long the gift has been available to the winner. Reviewing the database, about 97% of gifts are sent through SG, so that will cover the majority of cases. If you choose to send a gift outside of SG using email or Steam, then you will still need to send us additional information if you cannot reach the winner. The FAQ has been updated to the below.

  • What should I do if the winner of my giveaway has not redeemed their key or gift, and I'm unable to get into contact with them?

    1. If you sent the winner a key or gift link through our site over one week ago, then you can create a support ticket to request a new winner. Select "Unresponsive Winner" as the reason for the request.
    2. If you did not use our site to send the gift, then when creating the ticket we ask you to show you made an adequate attempt to send the gift to the winner over one week ago. This needs to be screenshots for one of the following:

      • A key or gift link sent to the winner's email address or by Steam chat (censor the key or gift link in the screenshot).
      • An email or Steam chat attempting to move forward with the gifting process (e.g. "Congratulations on winning my giveaway, where would you prefer I send the key?").
      • A pending Steam gift purchase or trade offer sent to the winner.
      • A pending Steam friend request, along with either an email or comment on SteamGifts to explain the pending request to the winner (e.g. "I sent you a Steam friend request, please accept so I can send the gift through Steam"). If you choose to write a comment on SteamGifts, include a link to the comment instead of a screenshot. The comment needs to be a reply to one of the winner's comments in your giveaway or a comment in one of the winner's own giveaways to trigger a notification for them.

When providing screenshots, include timestamps when possible, as we will use these dates to determine when the conditions were met. If no timestamps are provided, we'll wait one week from receiving the screenshots to approve the request. When sending us a screenshot of an email, the date of the email and the recipient's email address needs to be visible.

A few notes...

  • When requesting a new winner the "Unable to Contact Through Steam or E-mail" reason has been renamed to "Unresponsive Winner".
  • Logging started in the middle of February, so we have data from that point forward.
  • Moderators can only view a part of the key or gift link in the log, and the remainder is censored for security.

Great changes!

Also a FYI for most users: you can send your "steam key" through SG even if you're sending the gift through Steam's system. How? " sent-via-steam " and similar "keys" are accepted on SG, which is a fantastic reminder that the gifting will happen on Steam.
Been on both sides of the gift, it's really nice that it utilizes SG's "trophy is blinking, gift is sent" feature ^^

And it's not a bad thing that you didn't know about it considering we have giveaway descriptions for a reason! Creators should write it in there instead of leaving it empty like most of the creators sending Steam direct gifts, who then expect winners to accept just any random friend request.
For now this "feature" has mostly been used by creators not wanting to deliver a gift and instead writing something along the lines of "kiss-my-ass". It's easy to see why tickets cannot be automated (as requested by certain people every other day) and why this hasn't been something that's been 'advertised'.

Still have to wait over a week, how does this change anything?
To clarify this still allows bot users/autojoiners to completely ignore everything and flip the bird to everyone for 4-5 days at a time then take their wins. So ultimately nothing has changed.

You no longer have to hunt for the winner on Steam or via email

While that may seem helpful it's actually pretty redundant

Creator has 7 days to send win, and winner has 7 days to activate. If you vote to limit time given to winners, you'd also vote to shorten the same time for creators.

People have lives outside the Internet. No one can be expected to be online all the time, glued to the screen. People sleep. Or work. Or do life admin. Or take care of kids. Or study. Or end in a hospital. If you have time to be on SG each single day, and always send or activate keys within a day, you have some form of privilege that not everyone always have.

I was doing two jobs, take care of my cousin's kids in between shifts, and sleep for 4.5h a day. Activating daily (when I was still entering GAs that is) if I win something was impossible. That's why I was glad there is a 7-day timer, so if I win something, from the limited number of GAs I was entering, I would still have time to start my laptop after 2 or 3 days to activate it.

First of all, I don't know if they have already been proposed or if they are easily implemented.

I understand very well what you are saying, that we also have a real life with all its ups and downs.
In that case, I would like to suggest something. Let the winners have more weeks at their disposal (say 3 or 4 weeks). But in every day connected to the site, it is reduced by a week. In this way, someone who happened to go to the hospital, their laptop does not work, or something else happened to them, will not be penalized and will have no reason to worry about possible activations. But those who use illegal scripts.

Also it would be good when one already has a key ready for activation, not being able to take part in other giveaways. Instead of Enter Giveaway or Previously Won, something like You have a key to activate. It will also act as a deterrent to the use of illegal scripts.

While well thought out to the point of scrutiny that has nothing to do with anything I said. I don't know how it can be considered privilege to be able to take 5 minutes out of a day to check something but I'm not going to argue because as I said that wasn't even the point. Point was this ultimately changes nothing. It's like giving a loaf of bread to a homeless man, it's nice but it doesn't fix the problem. There ARE people using scripts, programs, bots or whatever you want to call it that are actively entering giveaways every single day but aren't actually in person and as such don't check their wins and it's annoying. This has nothing to do with having a personal life which seems to always be the de facto argument. They are very predictable as well because they always log in about once a week to claim their wins. But whatever.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If something serious happens IRL so that you don't have a few minutes to check your email claiming a won game is one of the least important things probably.

This argument distracts only from the overwhelming majority of unresponsive winners who are using scripts and take advantage of the 7 day rule.

so like I said it changes nothing because the bots will just keep doing their regular rotation. If you can't see how this changes nothing I'm not sure how to clear it up any more. Maybe that 1/1000 bot that never claims any wins it will help but honestly whatever

Comment has been collapsed.

It won't stop people entering, and winning, multiple GAs, and not claiming. From my own experience, it's a lot more than 1/1000 not claiming their wins.

This simplifies it. You open the ticket, and instead of having to go through the steps unique to each mod, they just auto-reroll, as they would if the winner is suspended.

Not as good as automation, but considerably better than the current system.

Most of those people will claim within the week allotted because whatever reason they have. Trust me it's a small few that take more than a week or just seemingly never claim. Anyway I guess a small step is still a step.

Of the 20ish keys I gave away the other day, most claimed within the first few days. Two are always online and have not claimed after four days. While it's possible they only check once a week, in my experience, the ones that leave it that long never claim them. So far I have had to do it six times. I'd be very surprised if these last two claim in the next few days.

I think you used up all your luck but you never know, you could always try reloading till you get the desired outcome. Wait that only works in video games doesn't it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No reloading IRL, that would be something. I finally got to use it and the process was simple. Open ticket exactly 7 days later. Wait 20 mins for mod to read it. Reroll.

The process before this was leave a message on their profile/previous GAs. Wait another 7 days, so 14 days total. Then request reroll again. One wanted a screenshot, and then didn't like the screenshot, so wanted a second one.

This is like what happens when you request a reroll from a suspended winner, no hassle, just reroll granted. No reason why this couldn't be automated, but it's still a big improvement on the previous system.

That sounds good that there is a singular policy that is to be followed now, should have been like that to begin with. From what I hear it actually was like that many years ago so is this really a change? Or just affirmation of what was already in place?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There was definite inconsistency before. So at least it is simple now. No idea about previous policies. I joined shortly before you did, and didn't have any trouble with any of my initial GAs. So had no need to create tickets.

Quite presumptuous to suggest that "absolutely nothing" changes just because something doesn't do what you want it to do, isn't it?

Maybe you can register that many users and mods celebrate this change. Maybe you could even possibly imagine that they have a good reason to do so, even if it doesn't seem that you get why.

Anyways, you've been told multiple times that it isn't an anti-bot measure. The purpose is to make experiences with lazy people less frustrating, be they bot users or not.
If you want further anti-bot measures you are welcome to make suggestions but stop using a generally welcome change that had been in high demand for many years, just to whine that it doesn't do what you want it to do.

It's not an anti bot/autojoiner change, it's a change that makes creating giveaways "fire and forget".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not about bots or even valid users accepting the win after a few days. There were cases of most likely bot users who did not even bother to check the site once a week(despite being marked as online).

After a week you could request a reroll, but then if you sent the key via SG you were asked to contact the winner once again this time via some means with a timestamp and wait another week.

If you sent the key via email etc, you already had proof of contact, but if you used SG to sent the key the moderators could not see when the key was sent and without documentation they would not grant a reroll. So basically the GA creator was penalized for using the site mechanics as without the evidence the one week rule worked against the creator and in favour of the unresponsive winner

The winner has always had a week to redeem. That's pretty reasonable. Life happens.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People who are on the site every day taking a week to redeem is never reasonable. Everyone keeps using this life happens shield. Well if they can be online every day they can claim their wins. But that doesn't happen. Because they aren't actually there, it's a program doing things automagically. Everyone keeps throwing this one week nonsense at me too, never said anything about normal people with lives needing up to a week to claim something. But this fairytale scenario of getting hospitalized or whatever else hardly ever surfaces, it's usually just someone utilizing a tool to auto join giveaways. But whatever I'm honestly over it, if people still want to believe most of these delayed/never claimed giveaways are due to "life happening" and that somehow removing the need for "evidence" is going to change that or in any way make it better then have at it. I still say it's like giving a loaf of bread to a homeless man, a nice sentiment but ultimately futile.
