I've tried a number of answers that seem to fit, and it's clear that I'm completely off base. This is so frustrating, the other 5 are so easy is the third supposed to be so hard or am i just stupid

you're not stupid. the riddle is extremely open-ended. plants, rust, and mold could easily fit the criteria of the question. I'm stumped just as much as you are
