Before the new rules, we had games that were traded in enourmous volumes (see chart as an example). Now, I am not sure if any of such games left.

You cannot any longer buy many games as gifts to be stored in your inventory (this include such games as cs:go, garry's mod, ark, left 4 dead 2, payday 2, mount & blade: warband, etc.).

I am afraid you are right.

Not really. If you want to know why cs:go isn't sold that much lately, it's because you can't buy it as a gift and you will be banned from buying it if you sell it to someone that gets a VAC ban. Only a few people have cs:go copies left. I have a cs complete specifically. :B But anyway, in general, trading has faced many difficulties lately, with many new rules. It's obvious that Gabe wants us destroyed, but we still find ways to trade. That's all. :/

CS:GO was the most popular game to be traded. Also, many other good games for trading, such as Garry's Mod, Left 4 Dead 2, ARK cannot be bought as a gift. Such games as Witcher 3 or GTA V cost a lot and the trading margin for them is low. I cannot see what left for traders.

I know, I know. Firstly, they made the EU2 region as EU, so they increased the price of cs:go and other games. Then, they removed the option to buy it as a gift. Then, they just made a new rule that you can buy them as gifts, but you can't store them in your inventory and you won't be able to buy them again if the guys that buys it gets a VAC ban. I used to make 40-50 euros per day when selling cs:go during sales. What's left for traders is buying some games during sales and selling them after the sales. That's all. :/

I live in EU1, so I could not buy pretty much anything during sales because the prices in other regions were always higher... So, I bought gifts from other traders and re-sold them after the sale finished. I knew that I would be able to quickly sell high volume games. However, now I do not even know what to buy because sales happen quite often and I do not have any confidence that I will be able to sell gifts before the next sale starts.

Check steamdb for the cheapest ROW regions for every game - usually, the cheapest ROW games are in Canada. Buy from Canadian traders during sales and then sell the games after the sales for a bit higher price. It takes time, especially when they're still untradable, but usually, the tradable copies get sold faster.

That waht I did. And now if you buy something at 50% sale you cannot be sure that you will be able to sell it before the next sale where that game will be 66% off for example.

True words. ;_; As long as you're patient though, you'll sell it eventually.

Csgo can't be bought as a gift, so yep, trading (csgo gifts) is dead

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sure, it was just an example of the most tradable game. Many others cannot be traded any more as well. And those that cn be traded will not be traded in high volumes I guess.

It's because you can't buy it as gift any more (VAC games)

Permalink

Yes, your point is correct. The full version of my question: is trading dead because you cannot buy the best games for trading as gifts any longer?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Don't think so imo, alot of games mad max, shadow of mordor, rise of the tomb raider etc etc. don't use VAC, not to forget CS:GO trading, tf2 etc.

Here the the chart for Shadow of Mordor... Around 100 copies sold within 1+ year... For Mad Max and Rise of the Tomb Raider the stats are even worse.

This game is only sold on Steam and Valve disabled gift purchases. The only trading that can be done is on the few gift copies people haven't used up yet, but after that it will be impossible to buy it for anything but an own account. That is when account trading will really hit high gear.

I agree, also you cannot buy many other good games for trading as gifts any more. So, does it mean that trading is dead?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, it just consolidated and is slowly turning into game key trading. Bundle level game trading is still very much alive, but with Steam have terrible prices and region-locks on inventory items, keys are purchased more now.

Permalink

Trading keys manually takes a lot of time, it's almost impossible.

Nah, that's more cheating/smurfing related

Nope. They say so, but that's not true. They just don't want people to profit by selling cs:go copies.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's a collateral effect.
Vac banned player used to re-buy csgo for a small amount of money.
Now they'll have to spend more.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. To pass new strict rules, they always make it look like they do it for a good reason. Happens in real life too, not only on steam. ;)

Permalink

I think the bigger issue was the block on the purchase of gift copies of CS:GO, and that was to crack down on persistent hackers and cheaters stockpiling large quantities of CS:GO during sales to prepare for their inevitable VAC bans and the traders that were also supplying and enabling them.

You buy a gift and then it gets revoked. It happened to me once when I bought 28 copies of cs:go and even sold them by the time they got revoked. I made a full refund for the buyer, but the guy who sold me those copies never did the same for me. The worst thing was that I bought those copies from a very respectful seller at dispenser. And he just stopped answering my messages at some point.

There is no such thing as very Respectfull sadly ...

Ive seen ppl with Steam library of over 2k games , 500+ Rep here ... Scam a game that was free on Gleam in a reddit trade .

I know trading is profitable for many ppl , its a way to invest small ammount and just keep getting stuff out of it for a long long time .

But I dont have the time to do so , i just want to get a game for cheaper ( even if the resseler got it even cheaper then that ) and be happy with my purchuase ...

Ive been lucky most of the time , but sadly 30$ was abit to much of a hit for me ;)

If region locks and trade holds didn't kill trading, I doubt it will ever die. Dimished? Sure, but never dead.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Region locks did not influence trading much... Earlier everybody bought gifts from RU/CIS store for X keys and sold them afterwards for X+2 keys... Now, you buy ROW games from Canadian/Japanese/etc. stores for Y and sell them for Y+2 keys... Y>X, so your margin became less, but the volumes did not become noticably lower.

The Kiwis are probably the most preferred store right now, although Norway, Canada, and Japan indeed can win at some games. :)

Permalink

I think Norwegian store often wins NZ one. Anyway, it is hard to find a decent trader from New Zealand, who offers good prices.

The 1 month hold for gift copies is awhile.

I feel like is what really killed trading.

Permalink

What's wrong with sending untradable gifts by email?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if official Steam trading gets killed, non-steam trading can't be easily killed and people will trade, be it for steam keys, RWC or other things. Plus they can't kill it entirely - things like steam cards will be always tradable, that's the whole point of them.

I do not know good sites that supports cd keys trading. I personally use kinguin, but their fee is quite high and it is not that simple to withdraw money from them.

What you showed us was just statistics about CS:GO gift trading in dispenser.tf

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"A lot" does not mean anything. Is it more trades hapinning now than it was one year ago or less? And how much more/less? Dispenser seems to be the only source, which allows gathering this kind of statistics easily.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Trades are happening every day outside dispenser too, just because there are less trades on dispenser doesen't mean there are less trades outside dispenser

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Less.
It has nothing to do with the authenticator or Valve in general, people just realised it is not the cheapest way to get a game. I would wager that the keys sold on grey market have the exact opposite curve.

Maybe csgo trading is dead, lot of smurfs got their business cut and, apparently, honest traders were killed in the process
