Torchlight 1 and 2 at Fanatical for $2.99, many, many hours of solid gameplay at that price (and you don't already own them).

Is this version still worth playing if I never played it before or should I jump straight to the new version?

New version is basically remake of this original, with more content. The graphics switched from the solid-line hand-drawn to a pixelated style. The pixelated style actually has more graphical detail and better visual effects. The new game runs smoother also. The soundtrack is redone as well, so there are differences. In my opinion, for the better. There is nothing that's in the original that's not in Rebirth. Plus the DLCs add a lot more content as well. There's nothing from the original game that did not show back up in Rebirth.

The biggest thing for me is actually having controller support in Rebirth, whereas the original does not.

Anyway, if you can spare the difference, get Rebirth.

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it. I forgot to mention that I already own the old version, that's the main reason I'm asking. I guess I'll play the old version for now and buy rebirth for cheaper sometime in the future when I'll want to replay it.

You are welcome. The keyboard controls work fine and if you get used to it, it's totally fine. If you already have the old version, might as well see if it's something you would like. It's very addictive. :-)

Anyway, I hope you have fun!

Um, I have not been able to learn how to play this game on a gamepad, while there are no problems with other games.

For Rebirth you mean? I use the two joysticks for movement and shooting, while using the shoulder and triggers for the various things like bombs, active items, etc.

But if you stick with the keyboard controls they work fine too, nothing wrong with those.

Yes, I'm used to distributing individual actions to separate fingers, and it's just not convenient for me to control the sticks.

I totally understand, I have another friend who prefers keyboard for this game as well, especially after spending hundreds of hours in the original BoI on KB, he just felt it to be too awkward to make the switch. I do like the KB controls as well, I am just someone who tries to use a controller whenever possible.

Play the old version if you have one.
If you like it, buy a new one - you will like it even more. If not, then don't buy, this is not your genre of games, it happens.

True, was just wondering if it's worth playing at all compared to the new version. When the difference isn't that big, I don't really care.

The difference is very big - they changed the game engine, changed the visual part, added many new items, and also support for the Steam Workshop.
Still, the basic mechanics of the game have not changed.

Thanks, I may wait a while on this one though. 10 euro seems a little pricy for me, plus I'd have to get the dlc as too and I'm stingy as hell. :)

Dust was one of my first indie games, I both love it and hate it for that :D I stupidly got blindly convinced that every indie game is done with care and they do deserve a try. Burnt myself a few...dozen? half or full shovelware afterward....
it's a really cool one though, for realsies :P

oh yeah, there's a LOT of shovelware out there in the sea. I love indie games to death and they're pretty much all I play. But damn, a disgusting amount of them aren't worth even a moment.

it's only 20% discount at the moment, but keep an eye on CrossCode. Make sure you like the genre and if it is a YES, you will enjoy it for sure.

I played it few years ago during early access and loved everything except for the puzzle dungeons only cause some of them actually required you to be pixel perfect and when you inevitably failed you had to reset everything and set it up again. It's been a long time since that, so I'll definitely need to recheck the game now!

Yeah, good pixel art, nice story, interesting combat, challenging jumping exploration (if you want to get extra items) and tricky puzzles. I still think the game is greatly recommendable, but I want to tell you...

I decided I was going to beat the game without help or guides (if I could). I did some side quests and found one I couldn't beat, had a look in the Internet and it was pretty difficult, there are many things the game doesn't explain, but it is still a nice game. kept playing and decided I would still try to beat the main story without help, (I don't have much time nowadays) so continued the main story and did a few of sidequests. Reached a point, let's say, 85% of the main story, there was a point I had to find a certain object/item/character (I couldn't remember which one I was looking for as I could play only once a week), looked everywhere in the zone in a fast-brief way and didn't find it. I assumed it was a sidequest and wanted to finish that part before going to bed, so I decided to look the solution in youtube. The object/item/character was very near but there was special way to reach it. My ego was still safe, as I saw in the youtube comments I had just unlocked the future Good Ending.

Well, in the last dungeon, after beating seriusly tricky puzzles in the dungeons (obviously, in ways that where not explained anywhere before), reached one I couldn't beat, I usually made it by having a rest and coming back to the game later or trying different things. But the most logic way of doing it didn't work and I was looking for really complex ways of solving the puzzle. Well, had to have a look and destroy my "I beat the game's main story without help" ego. It turned out it was just a stupid shot I previously tried but aimed incorrectly. I took for granted that wasn't the way and I was trying to solve it in crazy ways (which where what the player had to do in some other puzzles of them game). So finally, my fear of not being able to finish it without help made me do it, I had to look for help in a place where I was just missing a shot I had done badly in the beginnning. The worst thing was I had been feeling some pressure of this moment since the seond dungeon, where I may had to look for help for the main story, and it came in the most stupid case. In fact, I partly believe that pressure/fear was the one that made me think I reached an impossible puzzle for me and made me look for the solution, and it was a plain stupid solution, totally obvious, much more simpler than many puzzles I had solved previosly.

to be fair, the game has an assist mode to help you in combats and some time-related puzzles. It has been very well done and the devs deserve recognition.

But this last part darkened my experience for some time. After thinking for a while I realised it was just me. I don't know when I started being as exigent with myself when playing games, especially now, that I don't have even a quarter of the free time I used to have (work, family...).

So, my advice, enjoy the combats, the story, the art, the jumps and the puzzles you feel comfortable with... use help in the rest if you need, no shame on that, don't be like me. Oh! and don't try to get all sidequests and extra items in the first walkthrough, that's almost insane!

EDIT it took me 3 months (35-38 hours) to beat it, as I could only play friday nights, you can beat the main story in 30h.
