Spoiler tags have now become obsolete through overuse. I mean, every time someone sees one his/her first impulse is to see whats under it, right? And that's not what should happen at all.
So I think that SG should introduce new spoiler tags, something like the ones used by IMDB, and the current spoiler tags should be turned into "hidden text".

You should really say spoiler for what TV series/movie/game/book, don't just say spoiler, I don't watch everything D:

For someone who watched every episode of GoT (and more than once) I would be very angry if anything in this great series would be spoiled - so I suggest adding "A REAL Game of Thrones Spoiler" to your OP to make it clearer.

As for your suggestion - I think you're correct, spoilers have become just a (TEXT) replacement and jokes for the most part and don't serve their original purpose anymore.

The problem is assuming that spoiler tags ever had that function.

In any forum I use these days, spoiler tags are used as they are here, with preceeding text defining if they're actually being used to 'spoil' anything.

In forums where they condense text, they're most often used in a 'for more information' application, to reduce initial post size.

While these spoiler tags aren't used much differently than elsewhere, this particular format of spoiler tags just makes it a lot easier to spoil something- regardless of if they're being used as gags or not.

It's just far too easy to accidentally scroll over something.

Rather, if you want 'proper' spoiler tags, something more akin to the usual text-condensing format ought be added as well.

This can easily become a POV debate (original intention vs actual usage etc') but if we want to keep it practical there are options to suggest here that can be used to show a more.. "serious" intention in the use of spoilers. One suggestion is a text that appears only after you click on its tagged field. Right now just by scrolling through the page you reveal spoilers even without intention - using an extra layer (and keeping the 'old' light-spoiler in its place) might make a difference. It should also be less easy to create for the same seriousness intention we want to deliver - so something like ~ won't work. Maybe a real tag [spoiler] or [spl] or [hidden] can work better.

True, but some design choices sometimes have more impact on the users - see my suggestion above for clickable text.

My first impulse would be the same for both spoiler types tbh.
