The release date of Windows 10 is 29th July.
Does anyone know if it's a midnight launch?

Don't forget about timezones. Midnight for me might be noon for you.

i'm planning on getting a new copy (hurra for Uni). just notice that the key you have will be a win10 key from now on. you won't be able to get a new installation for your win version with it.

you can rollback in the first month or so.

This is my plan too. I'm waiting anxiously for the campus bookstore to start stocking 10 so I can score a copy or two for next to nothing.

Not everyone will receive it on July 29th. The upgrade will be sent first to those who signed up for the Windows Insider beta program and then in "slow waves" to everyone else.

What happens when I reserve?
When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-faq?ocid=win10_auxapp_LearnMore_win10faq

So basically, if you're apart of the Windows Insider beta program, you'll upgrade on the 29th while everyone else will upgrade after the 29th, in waves.

What if I didn't updated my windows in a long time now and have around 3+gb updates and want to do a fresh install of windows 10 via an iso instead? will my key for 8 pro work with this ?

You need to reserve the copy first. Upgrade via that program you can NOT do it manually.

Fresh install option will be available thru the program.

Only a couple of updates if you're already at 8.1. According to: http://techdows.com/2015/06/how-to-enable-get-windows-10-app-icon-windows-7-or-8-1-taskbar.html
For Windows 7 SP1:
KB3035583
KB2952664
For Windows 8.1 Update:
KB3035583
KB2976978

I couldn't get my "Get Windows 10" icon to show up and tried for about an hour various fixes. I had to uninstall and reinstall KB3035583.

Because your existing key isn't for Windows 10. Windows 10 key will be issued after you upgrade through the program. The program checks the eligibility of your key whether it's genuine or not then upgrades it.

If anything, reserve and install through the program. Just once.

Ah nice, I was thinking that the current product keys we have will support instead of getting new keys like it did from Win 8 to 8.1 upgrade.

You can always install up to 10 then do a factory reset? That way it re-installs 10 and gets rid of all the older 8.1 back ups etc? I know you can do that with any phone that updates to 10.

The Microsoft FAQ page for Windows 10 states that, "when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade."
http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/windows-10-faq

That's what I'm going by.

I already have installed Windows 10 Insider Preview on my PC. The date is for the upgrade from W7 or W8.1 (Enterprise and RT versions are excluded).

I'm curious, they don't auto push things to end-users' devices right? I sure as hell don't like my internet quota eaten up when I'm on 3G connection.

To be sure, you should cancel your W10 upgrade registration. You will be able to download the W10 ISO for free for a year.

Seem thats the case if you reserve according to the faq, but they also could push the files via windows update(which I hope not as its gonna be a mess to select right files since I have around 4gb updates left to update atm and low on data this month :| )

The files are pushed out according to your windows update preferences. So if you have it set to auto download, then it will auto download. I have update set to notify only, so I will have to go and manually start the download. I assume it will function the same on your windows 8 mobile device.

TL;DR they will spy you, share your data with anyone that they want, you have almost no rights if the software breaks your computer, you have no rights to make a virtual machine you have no rights....

people dont know, because its not an open code, you dont really know what could they make into your computer... take a look at this post: http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts-windows-10-permission-watch-every-move.html

Well this just applies to the Technical Preview. I understand that the Technical Preview exists as a kind of "test" so it doesn't surprise me that they are collecting so much data. I doubt you have to grant these permissions in the final release, though.

Fun Fact:

I have a printer from the win98 era that still works with win8. Just in case Windows 10 can't find drivers for it or something I used a program to backup the installed drivers. Maybe you could do something like this too? =)

Not for me, I tried installing Win 8 on my windows laptop, and was completely unstable (to the point where Visual Studio will not even open), so I'll stick with Win 7 for a while.

Seems like bad driver support. My laptop has drivers available for Windows 8, but I am still going to stick with Windows 7.

I reserved my copy, but I'm in no hurry to actually install it. I'll wait and see how it goes. Windows 7 has been terrific for me, so I won't upgrade until I have a reason.

We'll see how it actually ends up being utilized. I remember Microsoft briefly trying to encourage people to use their new OS by making a game exclusive (Halo 2). I prefer them giving us something with value as opposed to trying to punish us for non-compliance.

Same here, I am sticking with Windows 7 for now; if everything is good with 10, then I might give it a shot. But so far, Windows 7 has had 0 problems for me. It is simple and clean, and that is all that I want. On top of that my crappy laptop would have a harder time with games on 10 rather than 7.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Absolutely! I stuck with XP for a long time for the same reason. I see no benefit in updating for the sake of updating. And even if something does come out that requires DX12, its unlikely I'd buy it right away anyways. I usually wait at least a year. By then, its a GOTY version with plenty of patches and a low price tag.

Just to clear up some misinformation here. They are pushing it out in waves, so not everyone will be upgrading at the same time. It will auto-download it when it's your turn and then let you know you can install it. Drivers and games all work on windows 10 that work on Windows 8.1, I've been using it for months and I did the upgrade with no issues originally. It's been out long enough to iron out bugs, I've had a great experience with the preview version. No problems with games at all. At one point there was an issue with uplay but that got fixed, and I blame ubisoft :P

They will be in waves, but i would do load when i am ready and install when i am ready...so i am not to worried about getting it on day one,my windows 7 is doing just fine for me

I am more curious as if DirextX12 will be as good as they say and one rare cases where Microsoft might get something right....at least this will not force you to buy a new card just to use it.though like with 11 the features where not enough for me to go from 10 to 11 on launch so i did not take full use of 11 until i upgraded later. Most of 12 will work on pretty much any card that supports 11,but those on 10 or later will need to upgrade if they wish to use 12.

And i can only assume this version will be even speedier then 8 when it comes moving files and such, and it suppose to pretty much run anything that can on windows 7 and up but i could never really confirm that part for sure so until i see how things play with games and such i will wait to fully migrate,i still have windows 7 i can fall back on.

Should I remove my external harddrive before installing Windows 10?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would you? Or why would people? Windows 10 won't wipe your harddrives, be it internal or external, unless you specifically instruct it to do so.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A lot of people don't have experience installing Operating Systems, especially if they typically use pre-built systems, or systems built by a friend/family member. If a person were to do it very wrong, it would be possible to wipe all of the partitions on a computer, although that would require an almost deliberate string of mistakes.

People should be alright following the default settings, although one would certainly want to make sure to backup anything they don't want to risk losing (bookmarks, documents, pictures). Much like how Daylight Saving Time is a good chance to change your smoke detectors, installing an OS is a good reminder to make backups of key files.

That would be me. I've never installed an Operating System on my own. My brother has always done it for me.
When I got my new PC, I got it pre-built. Could have built with myself, or gotten someone else to, but I wanted to use it asap.

Don't worry, Windows install has become so easy, especially if you have a UEFI mobo, that it's not more complicated than installing a program.

Did you upgrade from win 7,8 or 8.1 to win 10 directly or did you do a clean install? I'm asking becouse i want to know what files you loose when upgrading from 8.1 to 10.

in case anyone finds this helpful...

I went here and downloaded windows 10. No waiting or reservations needed to access the download. It says you can download "installation media" with their "tools to prepare" for windows 10 on the webpage using a disk or USB flash drive, but for me, it actually downloaded the entire windows 10 program without needing to use these external components. Took about 4-5 hours to install.

Depending on whether your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit, simply select the version you need using the 'Download Tool Now' buttons
