What do you want to have this Christmas?
If Santa would see fit to give me, say, 500K, I could retire, so let's go for that.
However, I think this year he will again leave me with nothing, so I'll just continue saving up.

Oh, I'm not that picky. EUR would be great, but USD is also a great help.
Let's not make it yen though.

Well it's certainly better to have it than not have it, but... that's not going to give many folks an instant retirement plan. :P
Comment has been collapsed.
That's true, but why would you want to retire? All the people I know who decided to retire, it only took them 3-12 months to just come back in the game and chase for something to do. Life can be quite boring when you don't work. What you could do is do the things you love and you'll never have to retire.
Comment has been collapsed.
No -- you have to find something to do that you love that people are willing to pay you for, then you'd never have to retire.
For some people this combination may be easy to come by, but that's hardly universal. What you love doing may not be commercially interesting unless you do it in a particular way, for example, which then takes the fun out of it -- which is more or less where I'm at.
The ability to be free of the obligation to work is something I consider worth saving up for. The worst that could happen is that I end up with more money than I can spend on myself, and that problem has really simple solutions.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well inifnite money is quite different, mind you -- if I get much more than I simply need to live off, I'd suddenly be responsible for all that wealth, meaning I have to decide how it can do the most good. I'd certainly not be spending it on myself. Getting "as rich as possible" is certainly not a goal. But I assume you just said that by way of argument.
I don't want to "pursue" anything. I'm quite comfortable living as I do. I'm just done with the "work" component of it. Of course I'd expect not working would affect my mental health -- just not, as you seem to think, to a negative extent.
I'm quite aware my attitude to life is quite different from most people. I've stopped questioning that, as that really is a good way to affect your mental health negatively. The wants, desires, dreams and goals of other people are fine for them, and I wish everyone all the best. I have no particular need to be understood, either, so where that doesn't happen I'm fine with it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I honestly wish you all the best and the most success in the world.
What I was saying was not to argue with how you think, but to rather challenge your thoughts a bit. I have started following this type of mindset: “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.” - Jim Carrey
And based on that I no longer strive to be wealthy in the material department and rather enjoy the process.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, the "get rich or die trying" mindset, the endless (and pointless) pursuit of ever more material wealth, the "having for the sake of having", "keeping up with the Joneses" or however you want to name it, is not the answer. That you, me and Jim Carrey agree on. :)
This is also why I named a particular figure -- high as it is, it would simply be enough to make me stop working, not make me the richest man on earth. Being able to excuse yourself from the rat race entirely can be done in multiple ways; for me the most accessible way is to simply make working optional. I'm well on my way to achieve this in the next decade, which leaves plenty of work-free life.

If you don't mind sharing with me or others, what is that you want to do to achieve that? I am also interested in escaping this chase for money and I would be more than happy working for myself and having to just focus on that for the rest of my adult life.

It's called financial independence/retire early (FIRE). In a nutshell: take a critical look at what you're spending and what you really need, optimize your budget, conservatively invest what you have left, then let compound interest work its magic. Starting early in life helps, but just having lots of disposable income and not spending it on things you don't actually need works too. The "retire early" part is optional, by the way, just working towards financial independence has its own benefits in terms of improving your grip on finances and your sense of what you want from life. For some it just becomes "work less".
There are various sites, blogs and whatnot dedicated to the topic, which I won't spam here, but a good starting point is this post, because it really boils it down to essentials and was the eye opener for me.

I've made a calculation based on the website information in order to save 65% so you can retire early. I would probably need to move to a small apartment, that has a bathroom, kitchen and bedroom together that would be approx £600/month, £300/month on food and £27 to pay for internet or something, which is Impossible at this point.
I think my saving %/month is 37% meaning that I could retire in 25 years. I'd be by then 55 years old. Not too bad. 😅

Yeah, the nice thing about financial independence (and IMO the most important) is getting insight into your way of living, what you consider important, what you can settle for without sacrificing quality of life to an unacceptable degree, and what you really want to spend your money on (rather than just spending it because it's there). If that also leads to earlier retirement, so much the better, but if it doesn't, it's still worthwhile.

Someone who can write my math exams for me. Vector calculus, anyone?
I don't even know what I actually want, except for Christmas food and a good time. Maybe some clothes would be nice.

I'd vote for Boris Nemtsov, but he's been assassinated. I'd vote for Alexey Navalny, but he's in prison. I'd vote for Yulia Galyamina (she has recently voiced her presidential ambitions, after all), but she's been judged for holding unsanctioned rallies, found guilty and banned from elections. There's this absolutely amazing woman in Russia right now, her name is Ekaterina Shulman, she's insanely intelligent, understands politics better than many people who actually do politics, and she's got conscience on top of that. And she' also rather young (only 43), it could be such a relief after the current gerontocracy. I'd definitely vote for her. But I'm pretty sure that if she actually turns to politics, she'll be persecuted for some absurd reason immediately (if not downright murdered): she's way too charismatic and therefore dangerous.
Also, we don't have such a thing as actual honest elections anyway, the results are basically hand-drawn.

And if a country had only male rules for as long as it did, it is rather difficult to adjust to a female one. Russia did have some brilliant women leading in the past, so I do think she would make a nice one from what you've described.

Geforce Now or whatever you choose is a great alternative too. It may cost over the course of years a lot more, but heck, we can never know how long we will all game anyway. Some point, a child may come along and rob you for the last remaining time you've got with your PC.

The only reward you get really is the one you give yourself really. It doesn't pay as much as the work output you put. If you meet residents that have the capacity to thank you that is the most helpful thing to hear because you don't get many really.

Geforce 3060.
I've been unable to find one without buying an entire new PC just for it, and I can't afford to do that. :(

Ummm...I met with an accident by the bad humans in January.
I want to get compensation from the local government, which I believe the bad guys belong to.👾👽
So I buy lottery tickets so that the local government will not be troubled.🎯
However, the local government is still not elected, either because they are wicked or because they are behind in their dark procedures.😂
When is the first prize supposed to be delivered to me? 🎅
Well, I would also like to have a computer that can run any game lightly. I don't have any VR equipment for EARTH...

Oh, I am sorry to hear you had an accident. 😥 It never happened to me to be hit by a car so bad that I would be injured, but I did have a situation where I almost did. Are you injured badly, why is the human you're talking about bad? Did they disrespect you or insult you?

The evil human car that provoked the accident has fled the scene of the accident.
The police still haven't arrested the perpetrator.┐(´Θ`)┌
This winter, I installed a driving recorder two weeks ago in case of such evil humans.
It's expensive to buy every piece of equipment for humanity, but it's even more of a hassle to bring in evidence from outside the earth...( ・Θ・)σ🎥
This area is almost entirely populated by elderly people.
When averaging out the ages, it looks like a normal town because of the "Self-Defense Force base," but except for the areas around the base where there are young people, it is a crazy area where "old people with dementia drive like young people and repeatedly cause accidents," which is troubling.

I talked about this a lot in January of this year, so I'll spare you the details.
It makes me depressed when I remember it.
Do you think we'll destroy the human race?🛸

Is your car now fixed?
It's scrapped the day after the accident.
Then, a car was purchased by my relatives without my permission, even though I didn't choose it, and the car was a little difficult and caused pain in my back.
I'm glad you're okay!
No, my back still hurts.
(Fortunately, I feel much better after I bought a treatment machine at the end of last month.)
Perhaps it will get better. Thank you😊

I don't think I should really ask for more... My boyfriend already gave me a Razer Kishi and we're LDR atm so he paid quite a bit shipping wise... I'm happy and very grateful about it... I only have my pc to play games on but I don't have the best... Desk conditions to play so turning my phone into a handheld was a solution...
It was a really sweet gift and I couldn't really let it go unoticed so I took my little xmas savings (I'm unemployed atm due to my fragile health and the epidemic. Even vaccinated I'm a risk) and I got him a gift too. I couldn't just... Not. It didn't feel right! I want to make him smile as well.
However I really don't like making noise... And... The Kishi doesn't let me use the 3.5mm jack on my phone... I never had wireless headphones because I was scared of running out of battery (I have really bad anxiety/social anxiety and listening to music when I have to go outside + my meds helps me act like a normal person) so I thought maybe I had some leftover to get myself the SONY WHCH510B in black? But I don't think so. It might have to wait until I'm able to scrape up more money from the little I can work from home....
The little I have left I have to buy my little nephew (he's 3 now) some actual toys... All they gave him were clothes (he needs them to be honest) and weird used toys like very old cars and surprisingly, something that looks scarier than a furby without the, uh, the fur. So I hope I can get some educational toys, those woden dexterity ones and stuff? I'm scared... He's already 3 and I can tell that he wants to speak, he is trying to say things but with his parents divorce... I've tried my best, I taught him how to say moon and car and home and some other words! I also try to help him use crayons and draw. I want him to develop alright. He's a handful for someone like me that's so nervous and shaky but, he's my nephew and I love him.
Oh that got a little long, sorry! I mean I guess I already got really really lucky and shouldn't be greedy. But I think when I scrape up money again I'll go for those headphones... I feel a little bad that I'm not giving games this year like, I usualy just give here and it's fine I like bringing people joy! That... I think that would be something I'd like more... I think what I really want for xmas is for people to get what they want for xmas. I'm already very lucky. Very, very lucky.

A man that loves you truly, your existence and love is the greatest gift he could ever receive, but men love gifts just as much as women do, it's just that sometimes they do get neglected in society.

I'm sorry to hear about his situation. I know how you feel, but at that age, he isn't in any situation that would emotionally not get over as some things he does understand and some other things he doesn't. Being there for him, he might not see it now, but later in life, he will.

He's the best person I ever met... Not because of the gift I would have gone without anything he's just... A genuinely good person... I don't know what I did to deserve someone like him... And I agree 100%... Honestly he deserves the world...
I hope I'm doing enough of a good job... It's all I hope...

You don't have to excuse yourself. The point of the discussion was and is to spark conversation and I appreciate all the genuine response so many of you have came up with. It's one of the reason I do a discussion every now and then. 🥰

Your relationship with him reminds me a lot of mine with my wife. I don't know for how long you've been together, but if that spark doesn't fade away, make sure that you both fight to keep the kindle going. It's super important that no matter if you fight, argue or get to a point where things don't work. Always be willing to communicate things. Now I know this is off the subject, but I thought I should mention it anyway. It may not help you, but others who read this. Loving each other genuinely is not easy nowadays as there's so many ways to desensitise yourself from it. That's why when you find someone special, do your best to keep them.

Think about this being a letter to Santa. 🎅🏻
What would you want him to give you this end of the year as a Christmas gift?
I think I would go with the second option. An RTX 3070/3080 would be amazing so I can finally complete my dream gaming rig.
