Good news, I have just received an email from Microsoft of how to get windows 10 free upgrade. even if u haven't reserved it yet. its free for everyone

  2. scroll down and click on "Download Tool Now".
  3. choose " Upgrade This PC Now" or you can make an installation CD.

They announced that Win 10 upgrade from 7/8/8.1 is free for a year (not from XP/Vista). After you upgrade you will have a Win 10 license that can be used to reinstall as many times as your previous license allowed (if you have an OEM license, you cannot install it to another computer).

There are no bugs in the OS itself, at least I couldn't detect any. There are some minor bugs in Edge browser and OneDrive but I don't care since I don't use both.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Win 10 comes with Edge, but from what I hear, it's missing a lot of stuff that other browsers have. Probably they will roll out those stuff in patches later on like you said.

+1 it comes with W10 and lacks some actual features, like bookmark transfering from HTML or selecting the download location. I'll use it when it gets updated, it's really fast and responsive.

Welp if it's as fast as people say, I will 100% use it when they add bookmarks and sync with another browser ... and stuff like LastPass extensions.

The big important feature with edge is that it doesnt use 50% of your CPU like chrome does atm in Windows 10

Chrome uses no more cpu in windows 10 than it did in windows 7 for me.

That doesn't mean it does not use 50% of your CPU :)

I don't know about CPU, but since i just switched to Windows 10, my PC with Chrome, skype and Vuze is only using 4gb ram. On Windows 7 i was using for the same programs, same tabs opened on 7 as in 10, and it was using 6gb ram. Don't know if it's the windows itself using a lot less ram, or the programs using less ram, but i'm happy for now :D !

they talked something about better system memory management in W10, which means, if more programs request same file to be present in memory, it loads it only once and the programs share it, unlike in previous OS's

Oh well... that would be amazing for Chrome I guess :D. I mean Chrome does open a process for every tab XD. Maybe that's why there is a 2 gb difference XD.

I prefer to wait several months before check it, WIN 8.1 even now is not perfect especially if we speak about drivers. Now we have whole new system. But i heard that after upgrade to Win 10 it will appear some back-up with older system (avalible for 30 days) if you would want to back to previous system.

Well, you never specified which bugs you were referring to, so zeroxxx'z comment was entirely valid.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is because I am referring to ones I was told of by my gaming community and didn't feel it necessary to explain here as I was simply stating my general opinion, not trying to start a full-blown discussion.

Little did I know being 100% specific about every situation you speak of on the internet is required.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It wasn't valid, Windows 10 was just till now in the process of creation, what you say "bugs" were only unfinished things. Also, this windows had and have over 2 milion of users from which the data was gathered along with a "windows feedback" full of questions and demands from the users which they fixed/done/etc them all. Also, if you had problems till now with software/drivers, it wasn't a windows bug, it was a bug in your software, just get the last version of it, or wait for it if it doesn't exists, simple as that. Also, the reservation, as it's own name, "first to come, first to receive", they will upgrade from 3 windows editions, 7, 8, 8.1. If I were you, I would reserve it as fast as I can. I was an insider till now and now I got my own windows 10, but that doesn't really matters. AMD is on and up to date, nvidia should be as well, all directx works, you even get the last one. I've played till now on windows 10 ( at least 4 months ), even games which didn't worked in windows 8.1 works in 10, just go ahead and get it, it will work any game that worked on win7.

Permalink

You're overthinking this.

The bugs in question weren't specified = zeroxxx had no reason to assume he didn't mean each and every bug in the OS = the comment was valid.

I had this issue too -You can trigger a manual download though - I had to trigger the download 8 times before it worked - then it crashed during installation and reverted back to 8.1.
So I manually triggered it AGAIN 3 times.
It downloaded again, I D/C'd my internet connection and it installed in just under an hour.
10 does include edge - the hold off is on the Cortana Voice program - and only in some countries. Apparently it has trouble understanding some accents - Australia specifically and some Euro's.
And there seems to be a pretty good jump in video performance with steam games - previously with 8.1 and DX 11, I could get 17 - 22 fps on medium in ARK with my card running at 70c to 75C.
With the new DX12, I'm getting 30 - 44fps on High and my card only hits 65C-68C.
Edge is crisper/cleaner looking - but there is no option to not install "Bing". Homepage setup can sort of clear it away, so you can go to google or whatever, but when you open edge you still autoload a "Where to next?" Page that likes to promote MS News sites etc. And with the lack of addons that means no removal of bing - YET.
Boots slightly slower than 8.1 currently but that's only because I haven't fully deactivated a lot of options yet :)
With the OS purportedly able to support 512 GB RAM in the 64bit Pro (Unconfirmed as yet - no-one I know personally has that much RAM lying around let alone a MOBO that supports that much), if true I can see a lot of upgraded boards being purchased in the near future.
I have only noticed a few utility apps that have failed to work correctly - Gigabyte Motherboard "Easy Tune 6" specifically comes up with a number of errors.
Hope this info helps.

And what bugs are those? i have not come across any huge bugs yet,no minor ones either that i know of.

If your waiting for a bug free windows, well you might die of old age before that happens or hell freezes over.Hell even the mighty Penguin has bugs that get fixed, nothing is bug free and ever will be.

You can download the iso from Microsoft and install it without a key or upgrade to see how it works for you and if you will like it without jumping all in.

It runs faster then 8.1 and a lot faster then 7 so far i like what i see so i took leap after testing it out a bit. Also i installed 10 on a spare hd so i could keep Windows 7 intact. If you do not have an extra hd you can always make a new partition and dual boot

Yes, Windows 8 is crap, but windows 8.1 is superiour in every way to 7 and 8 (but if you have a mid-low config, 7 will be better for your framerates, 8.1 is the best for high-end). 8.1 is smooth and fast, just get PRO N with latest updates and see for yourself.
As for 10, I do believe it will be the best, but not yet, not in day 1 or until they update it. It will have some issues for some until they fix it.

I had worst overall performance on every notebook (Intel i5/i7 4nd gen with dedicated Radeon 8800M/Nvidia model-that-I-don't remember) that I've had with Windows 8 then updated to 8.1. at some point, I just give up to try... It just didn't fit on my needs.
When I downgrade to Windows 7, I instantly felt like I was working with a PC again. On Windows 8 retty bad UI for mouse use porpouses with a lot of unused space... They just got the worst of Apple OS and got nothing good from previous Windows versions.
Fortunately, most of them are announced back on Windows 10... (there's where my hope is)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A 8.1 pro n version out of the box was the best; also, you could downgrade your start program and tweak it a little bit, getting rid of all the tablet UI and features.
In 10 they combined old Start with the new one; looks very good imo. Minor tablet features are still there but the interface got much better.
I also installed fresh windows 10 on another laptop (same model as mine but 2gb less ram) and the freezes and other trouble that I had with this one were not present at all. fast boot, fast responses, fast everything.
So if you plan on installing it, do it fresh. avoid upgrading. Then disable that sh1tload of microsoft options to monitor your data, including the 'torrent' option of Windows Updates (that let you upload to others without consent)

If you upgrade, it's kinda free, if you clean install it requires a cd-key. You just really have to look carefully to turn off everything. As for privacy, they always let us pirate it. If they would, they could make an uncrackable windows, but that's not good for any of us. Every major company tracks you, you just have to protect yourself, especially if you're going to do something bad, haha.

They might, but it's unlikely. They might also say they "removed" their spying tools by hiding the options to control them from view.

If you're worried about that kind of stuff, Linux really is the best choice. It's got plenty of games at this point, there's also WINE and you can always keep a Windows machine around as a "console" to handle your Windows-only titles.

EDIT: and we're forgetting that the reason Microsoft went back on their Xbox One descisions is because they were seeing major competition from the PS4. With Windows, well, they have nearly complete market dominance. People who love to respond to Linux threads or comments with "lol use Windows, Linux isnt a real OS" are only feeding into that. So long as everyone uses Windows, Microsoft has no reason to cave into any demands or petitions. They'll just keep doing whatever the fuck they want.

I will wait one month and a few days. See what is going on with the windows 10. If I am not satisfied, I will start slowly migrating to linux. Until then I will try a few to see what suits me. On one hand, I want to say "it's not like you didn't give all that data to google already, what's wrong with giving it to MS too".
On the other hand, they made Solitaire a F2P game (yeah, I know it was on W8 too, but then it was optional install, now it's installed by default), so I'm really not sure what other ideas MS might get.

When people joked "DX12 will be like Xbox Live Gold - on monthly subscription", nobody thought MS might decide it is a good idea. Now it wouldn't surprise me...

Some sites I just could not browse, it loaded some of the elements of the site, but most of the site was broken, and every day another site was broken for me like that ( on every browser... ). 3 Anti virus programs said I had no viruses, malware or anything of the sort. you have to go through the upgrade process to use a windows 7/8 key. The only key you can input into the installation is a windows 10 key (since they're selling those too), a lot of people are downloading the files, doing a clean install, then being really angry that their windows 7/8 key doesn't work to activate.

yes once you do the upgrade you can go back and do a clean install at that point

Is there any truth to; if you go for the upgrade (and don't revert in the 30 days) then your key/license is only valid for windows10 from then on.
ie can't reinstall a retail copy of win 7/8.1 using its cd key anymore, will be stuck with 10?

More and more I'm thinking I'll hold off till new pc and consider getting a copy of 10 then, but keep my 7, maybe even get a copy of 8.1, unupgraded just in case.
I get the impression there won't be anykind of sp1/ .1 for win10, Often thought it's best till hold off till that point because then the os's are solid and tweaks been made from feedback. Win 10 though I think they'll charge at the sp1/.1 point. Either a sub or pay per upgrade.
Those privacy policy's and defaults are disgusting.

I know you have the 30 days to revert back but I've heard some claiming after that after that the key/license will no longer work for your old windows. :-/
Just can't find the basis for that so not sure if it's just scare mongering. Why this upgrades coming across I don't find it difficult to believe tho.

[edit] all could find is from here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/insider_wintp-insider_install/frequently-asked-questions-windows-10/5c0b9368-a9e8-4238-b1e4-45f4b7ed2fb9
"If you upgrade from a OEM or retail version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 to the free Windows 10 upgrade this summer, the license is consumed into it. Because the free upgrade is derived from the base qualifying license, Windows 10 will carry that licensing too."

Don't do it.

By the sounds of your edit, it seems like the upgrade eats your old key. I wouldn't do it unless you are 100% sure you're OK with losing your Win7/8 key.
Not worth it imo.

Hmm. Yea between this, privacy stuff, I wouldn't use cortana and wont get much from dx12. I'll stick with what I've got for now.

either way, windows converts even retail keys to oem, so if you change your motherboard you lose that copy of windows 10. It's possible to reinstall the original retail key and re-upgrade, but after a year even that's out.

somehow I still feel like it's a trap. I DON'T KNOW WHY.
And my original key is broken so I had to use a winloader (DAZ) and it does not support the upgrade anyway. I'll wait..

My friend installed it and said that he got a couple gigs added to his pc. Idk how but he did. Apparently windows 10 compresses everything.

I still have the option to upgrade but I'm just gonna stick with 7 for the foreseeable future. That is until my pc finally gives out and I get a new one.

So, a friend of mine has a laptop with a Windows 8 (don't know which version) key stored somewhere in the BIOS. Currently, she has only a pirated version of Windows 7 installed in the laptop. She wants to upgrade to Windows 10 (genuinely).

I assume this "everyone" in the topic means "everyone with a legit copy of Windows 7 or 8". I also assume the way to go is to install Windows 8 again, and then upgrade. Or can I just install it over 7, since the legit key is in the bios? Also, I read that reinstalling Windows 8 will only work if the version installed is EXACTLY the one it came with, and I don't know what version came originally with the laptop... Any clue? Thanks.

where had you read about EXACT version?
your friend ought to install win8 and only then update to win10 to be able to activate win10.

I've read it in another topic here in SG (about Windows key GAs or something), and I guess somewhere else on the internet, but can't remember/find where... You think I can get any ISO for Windows 8 and install it and it'll work as long as it's not the PRO version?

i see where i failed... ofc, you need win8 PRO :O
or version that was shipped with pc

Yes, that's the issue. I don't know version was shipped with the PC. I've even heard that if it was shipped with 8, an 8.1 ISO won't work, and vice-versa.

security updates will still be available to win 7 and 8 and we don't need dx12 anytime soon. really shitty of MS to include dx12 only with win 10

yup-yup... but with asshole move with dx12 i'd rather not trust ms with security updates on win7 and win8 :O
income is above all in the end =\

I think the Win8/8.1 release is like Win98/98se releases, so the next version (Win10) is skippable just like WinMe was.

Also, I doubt they will be able to keep DX12 restricted to Win10 -- people will just make an installer that works with Win7+.
