Organizing the steam library is quite challenging. I'm thinking of the different ways I can organize it and wanted to see what other people are doing.

How many categories do you organize a game in? (RPG,Strategy, Anime, etc)

My own system, which is...

I categorize games by series and genre.

As for games who are completely shut down and can't be played anymore, I put them in "Z Shut Down", because the character Z gets the category placed at the very bottom, so it doesn't clutter the global "Games" category. It's basically a memorial category of games that were active at the time but shut down due to business decisions or lack of player base.

how many tabs does that come to?

For me, it's 17 tabs for genres. Excluding the "shut down" category.

As for series, I only make those tabs if there are equal or more than 3 games. Because making a tab for just 2 games for every single series is not worth it, in my opinion.

My main sorting is by (average) time to beat (under 4 hours, 8, 20, and 40), with additional categories for games I funded and games in progress, and my two favs: puzzles (including roguelikes) and racing.

"Played", "Not played" (includes games I turned out to be not interested in at all, some I've never touched, some I've given a try; occasionally I look through this category and find something forgotten and curious) and uncategorized stuff I'm actually going to play someday.

I thought about using a sorting system by genre... but once games had more than one I got irritated and didn't do it.
Like: Do I put one game in 3 different genres or only in one? And how to decide which is the most important. So yeah, if I search something by genre, I mostly use lorenzostanco.com ooooor nowadays the steam tag thing.
But onto the actual question:
I sort by way too many things (considering I even sort by some other things on the Blaeo page as well... I might have a sorting problem).

  1. I sort (unplayed) games by year of release
  2. I sort finished games into > done with or without achievements and done by year.
  3. I have a few tabs for installed games. Like: Installed (aka all installed games), games with priority (for one reason or another), games I gotta play for groups or challenges or tasks I made myself (ABC game plan, etc.)
  4. The undone games by: Finished but not completed (yk the 100% thing is real), and undone with or without achievements...

Let's just say that are a lot of tabs. Luckily I didn't make any game length tabs - but only bc I have that on blaeo :D

I use to have it sorted but due to the dynamic categories that isn't needed anymore for if I want to play a certain game.
The only custom categories I have running are as follows:
Giveaways
Games From Friends
Completed
Must Review

dynamic helps a bit, until it puts odd games that doesn't fit the genre

Yeah except the ones I know I won't like them no matter what (cause of the genre etc...)

I have so many personal tags now, I really need to start over from zero lol
Lately I've been mostly playing my wins because
a) no time
b) huge backlog
c) those are the only tags I check in my library (won/playing/played)

Basically I check my latest wins and play whatever feels like fun right now.

Categorized by the genre. Unplayed games are in "games" default tag and move to genre-collection when it is beaten.

I categorize taking into account how many people can play using only my laptop (local multiplayer, I don't mind if it is splitscreen/same screen/hotseat, and I don't mind if it is cooperative, competitive or contra-operative) so... These are my hand made categories:
-1 Player
-2 Players
-3 Players
-4 Players+ (four or more in the same device)
-VR Games (I have added the ones Steam hasn't tagged as VR)
-TRASH (soft launches, servers, editors, betas...)

I WANT to sort them by genre... but i can't be bothered yet..
maybe one day when i have a few days to spare..

With the new tag system it seems easier... but how do you see what tags a game has other than the user-defined ones on the steam store page?
