How many categories do you organize a game in? (RPG,Strategy, Anime, etc)
I have a "Gifts (aka, top backlog priority)" tag for games which were... well- gifts, obviously. ^_^'
Everything else is uncategorized... well, ok, there is one other tag: It's called "Do not open until 10.04.2024" and only has The Stanley Parable in it. XD

If you're wondering what's up with the Stanley Parable, it's because the game has an (maximum sarcasm) ""achievement"" for not playing the game for 5 years. It's as stupid and pointless as it sounds (it also has other gems such as an achievement for "playing" the game for the entire duration of a Tuesday). Anyway, for whatever reason I decided to do it "legit" rather than the much more reasonable method of just setting my computer's clock five years ahead. ^_^'

Nope, just how I like it, lol. I am going to have to make a VR category now though seeing as Valve seems to have deemed it not valid enough to have a button for by default.

I have an Excel spreadsheet with all my games across various services. I then note whether I have/will/won’t ever play them; of those I intend to play, I have a brief description of them and their expected playtime.
I’ve never used Steam to organise them.

With the new library, I had to start over :( So I have several type categories (like adventure, puzzle...) using the dynamic collections and I also have a couple of other categories such as: Beaten but achievements to finish, Finished, Gifts, Playing Now, Playing Next, Won on SG, Won't play/ Not working and an Other category for everything else.
So I have quite a few categories since I like it when everything is well organized and I can find what I want easily:)
I also use Backloggery to keep track of the game I have on other platforms.

I have a simple system:
Favourites: Endless and repeatable games like Age of Mythology, Prison Architect, Test Drive Unlimited 2...
Hall of Fame: Games I played and be proud of.
Playlist: Simply my backlog.
Hidden / Garbage: Games I dropped, games I'll never play again or games already garbage.

No genre tags at all.
Installed-Ready To Play/ Unfinished (most pressing ones in my huge backlog)/Tools/Videos/Uncategorized (all the stuff I I haven't bothered to stick in a collection yet, and may never bother to stick in a collection...)

Well, I did add a genre yesterday. If "Crap" counts as a genre, that is.

I use Depressurizer, which categorizes games automatically (well, when asked)!
The most important classification is by time (in hours) as given by "How Long to Beat" (while "Oldxx" means games I have finished), but I added some categories based on Steam tags, for things like Controller Support and Local Multiplayer. And, of course, there is a whole category for my dear SG wins. :D
(Much of this is now unnecessary with the new library filters, but, hey, I did them already. And Depressurizer lets me deal with composite filters, like games which do NOT have Full Controller Support but take less than 5 hours, say.)
Cheers!

If you decide to give it a shot... well, Steam recently changed the way it does libraries, and it seems the library data is in two different places right now -- let us say that there is the "old" Library (which shows in "Small Mode", I think), and the "new" one (the "big" one). Depressurizer changes the categories in the "old" library, while Steam shows you the "new" one, so right now the changes you do inside Depressurizer do not automatically transfer to Steam...
....unless you manually ask Steam to import your "old" library into the "new" one... This can be done with the command "steam://resetcollections" (in Windows, open "Run..." and type that command). Careful, though, since this will wipe out any changes you have performed only in the "new" library.
So, yeah, right now Depressurizer is annoying (every time I change somehting there, I have to run this "ResetCollections" command)... but, despite this, I still think it is worth it. In Depressurizer, I can sort the games by many different attributes, filter them many ways (including composite filters), I often look there to choose what I will play next. You can even launch games directly from there, though I do not do it.
All of this for the price of $0! Buy now!
Wait, no, I am not associated with them. Just a happy user.
And I hope the Depressurizer folks will update it soon, to eliminate this "2-library" annoyance.
Cheers!

I don't categorize my games until they are finished. All are in "Uncategorized" by default and only those I currently play are installed (maybe 15), so easily picked out.
Once finished they go into one of the following: Favourites, Finished (completed but not going to play again), Rubbish (games I hated or had issues playing), Just for the Cards (these are games I could not play but are worth someone playing. Eg, Costume Quest- I suck at it). Two final categories are Movies (I have a couple and wanted them separated from games) and Removed (those games which have been banned or removed from Steam by the developers).
With the new library I find it easy to pick a new game from the hundreds in Uncategorized - just choose a genre and select :)

3 groups for finished (liked, neutral, disliked)
4 groups for "playing" (actively playing, "finished", not actively, games_that_i_won_on_steamgift_and_therefore_need_to_start_them_as_soon_as_possible)
9 groups for indie-games based on expected completion times (<5, <10, <15, <20, <30, <40, <60, <80, OMG_LONG_GAMES)
8 groups for AAA-games based on expected completion times (<15, <20, <30, <40, <50, 60, <80, WHY_THERE_SO_MANY_LONG_GAMES)
2 groups for coop-games (short-coop and long-coop)
1 group for games for which I need to buy DLC
1 group for games that I really want to play someday... after I finish at least 90% of games that I won here
1 group for games that I started but temporally dropped for some reason (like a few months in hospital) and need to re-start them someday
1 group for games that I definitely will not play

Organizing the steam library is quite challenging. I'm thinking of the different ways I can organize it and wanted to see what other people are doing.
