Soo, I was browsing thru Discovery Queue these winter sale days, and I tought...This s**t is really bad, it's like they show you games and ask you: Don't you like this game? It's really pretty, too bad you cant afford it, let's move to the next game you can't afford.

Isn't it like that ?

Discovery Queue is devil's work?

Devil here

Sometimes you find great games using it but it would've been nice if you could actually filter the games by price or other factors.

You just add games to your wishlist and wait for the next sale.

I don't think there is a question. It's just a "Buy this and that, we want your money".

I haven't gotten any visual novels in my queue, just racing, simulator and FPS. I'll trade you :(

I swear I filtered out over a hundred VNs since the sale started. And they still keep occupying half of my queues.

Somebody made some script that puts each and every game with a tag on the Not Interested list. I need to find it…

so what you're saying is, I can finally get rid of all movies? =O

Well, not really, but it helps with the queue:
http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/u0AOC/script-steam-queue-userscript-to-auto-click-not-interested-for-apps-with-certain-tags#6V9zEVN

I just installed it and ran it a few times. It'll help when I actually want to look at the queue. But it is more like semi-automatic and one-by-one. Still, somewhat useful.

It's not really any different from the existing queue, then- I'll still have to mark them individually.
My only aim was to exclude them from the queue entirely, but it seems easier to keep marking them as thy pop up :(

As long as that means I can finally filter out steam's terrible taste in movies, then I'm all for it.

They show games what valve wants you to buy ;) I done Queue in my account then go to my brothers account and Queue is almost the same ;)

The initial daily queue is, because they're basing on 'new and popular' alone.
If you keep cycling, it'll end up just being totally random games- basically any game you haven't already filtered to Not Interested or Wishlist.

Comment has been collapsed.

What do you mean with new and popular ,because there is games from 2010 and games which no one like to buy :D

It's the tags steam uses.
When a game pops up in your queue, it'll tell you which tag it's associated with, directly underneath the game images.
This game is in your discovery queue just to see if you might be interested. being the most common one you'll see, eventually, if you use the queue regularly.

This game is in your discovery queue because it is has positive user reviews.,
This game is in your discovery queue because it is new.,
and This game is in your discovery queue because it is popular. are the three big ones, though.

I've discovered some great games but I had to go through many suggestions. Still I like it - I can show you a nice amount of hidden gems now thanks to these queues.

For me, it is a good way to fatten my Not Interested list outside of filtering out uninteresting SG giveaways.
Plus I found two interesting free to play short games this week, and I have to admit: I enjoyed them. A lot. Enough to buy the "DLC" for both as a donation.

So… even though the choices are facepalm levels of bad ("hey, I see you put over 120 visual novels and over 300 zombies game on Not Interested, let me show you a dozen of both because they are 'popular'– how the term 'popular' is calculated for a game with a daily peak of SEVEN players is a secret–"), and, frankly, I think it is actually totally random with zero actual algorithm behind it besides their crappy RNG, after filtering out a few thousand titles, it may show something interesting. Rarely.

Popular is based on sales/activations [thus including spammed bundle keys], not peak activity, I believe.

And no, there's no algorithim to it, at least on the games you get after the initial daily selection. Later checks are pure RNG. All the rationales why the game is being shown to you seem added after the fact, given that "This game is in your discovery queue just to see if you might be interested." is by FAR the most common rationale given.

The initial daily selection appears to be a simple check against 'new', 'sponsored', and 'popular', and seems preset for all users, with substitutions for games you've already sorted.

source: Me and my 10,000 queue-sorted games :X
Much like Pokemon, one day I'll have sorted them all.
This assertion is highly doubtful in its validity, given that trashy EA games, greenlight games, and broken ports continue being added in ever-increasing numbers :(

I have one alt account and I use friend account to get extra cards. So far pretty much always quere is the same for both accounts. So if you have accounts with small number of games (so you don't have this "I own this so don't show me this game" filter) I believe that they will just show you some kind of pre-made list.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

All three lists for the event are pregenerated, same as the single list normally.

They should all be the same for all users, other than where games are substituted in the list due to already being marked Not Interested/Wishlisted.

As far as I've been able to determine, that does NOT continue on past the daily generations, since recommendation quality drops significantly after that.

You're welcome to test further and give us more data to work with :D

Either way, there's certainly no 'using your preferences to generate results' at play, which is the main point I was making- whether it's randomly generated for everyone, or per load-up, it's still just totally random [as it relates to your account].

This game has been recommended to you because of its popularity... WTF? Why are we all writing reviews in that has nothing to do with what's recommended to our friends, but they use popularity instead? Oh, yeah... MONEYZ for Gabens knife collection.

Well, I think it certainly has it moments. I've discovered some really interesting game through it which I instantly add it into my wishlist for future reference. Downside is, even if you idle for one trash game, they would show you games similar to those because "You recently played...". So, it's kinda a mixed bag. Best thing to do is just keep clicking the "next in queue" button.

The worst is when the reason something shows up in it is "'because you viewed game x recently"...
Living in a world full of behavioral analysis, that's just a sad loop that shouldn't exist. After the 15th time I click "not interested" on yetanotherzombiegame, you'd think even current technology should be able to figure things out, right?

When it comes to actually discovering hidden gems, steamgifts has been kinder to me. So Valve, I just figured your things out for you: get an awesome community to give free games, people will discover games!

To be honest I actually added a lot of interesting looking games to my whishlist that were showed in the discovery queue D:
But of course there were also a lot of crappy greenlight games and a ton of F2P games in the discovery queue, that no one is really interested in -_-

Most of the games that have been in my discovery queue are games that I would never play/have zero interest in. But there have also been some games that I didnt even know were out/on steam.
But then sometimes it shows games I already own... why do I need to discover something already in my library? <.<
