I'm still looking for the "Why Not?" option of the poll... >.^
I would be inclined to say "And why wouldn't there be"? Too. If other items can have "release discounts" or special promotions, to temporarily take advantage of hype-sales then why wouldn't something still relatively new, not take advantage of holidays specifically based around sales?

Some people save up thousands specifically for these sales, and splash out all at once. Sure, "technically" companies make less money per product, but if five people buy the product at a discount rate, versus a single person paying full rate, then the profit margin, dependant on production costs - which are often not even CLOSE to final selling price- the PS4 and XBox1 are reportedly making marginal profits, no more than around 20 bucks per unit, while an IPhone 6 for example makes a profit margin of around 60%; $200 to make, sell for $500. No idea of the values for the steam machines.

Even that is arguable though, since the data was for one, couple of years ago now, and two, there's no telling what kind of bulk discounts they'd be getting versus the atypical end-user. While a chip might be as low as $3 for the end user, a large company buying hundreds of thousands at a time, may only pay say, 60 cents a unit.

Well, not that the cost of manufacturing is the discussion at hand here, my point stands as being "why not?"
In some ways, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot in the short term, by not providing a discount, even if only say, a 10% sale. Being a new product, and one (outside the US?) not very well advertised, it'd pay off for them to have a discount, and actually get people to review and use the product. More reviews, better information availability, more feedback to improve on the system, and ultimately, more users swapping to, or sublimating with a steam machine, the more other companies will be wanting to work with them as part of their own gaming productions. Think Nvidia, and the fact its logo is virtually plastered on the intro of a LOT of different games with otherwise no affiliation to Nvidia itself.

Sure, all that will happen "eventually" with or without any sale. But the technology market is ever changing, while it might have potential as "the next big thing" now, how long until Microsoft or Sony come out with the next console, and steal the thunder? XBox 1 & PS4 already three years old, the guys in R&D probably already being forced to work on updated variants or the next gen console.
