While I wait for feedback in the discussion about polls, I'll setup a couple on the homepage as a trial to see if anyone votes or participates.

To start, the 90s were a great decade for FPS games. If you were gaming at that time, which classic FPS game/series did you enjoy the most?

Personally, I remember installing DOOM and Heretic from floppy disks. I was hooked on those two and I also spent a fair amount of time with Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. After that I recall using HyperTerminal to connect with a friend to play Quake II co-op, although I don't think my family appreciated the phone constantly ringing late at night as our modems tried to establish a connection to game together. Do you have any memories from these early games?

When I was a child, we went to buy our first PC with my father. There was Doom II on the screens in the store. So when we'd bought the PC, Doom II was the first game I played on it. It wasn't the first PC game I played, but it was the first on our own computer.
Later I played the likes of Duke Nukem, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Redneck Rampage and Half-Life, but Doom II will forever be my favorite FPS of that era.
p.s. Sorry for my English.

It´s hard being encouraged by non native speakers, you never stop questioning yourself unless you get responses like the above from actual native speakers. I kept telling my mum her english was fine and perfectly understandable for years, but she only really embraced (?) it during a visit to scotland where apparently talking to the lady at the grocery store was no problem at all (in bloody scotland! lmao).

Yup. Exactly.
I am not native speaker either, but since I've met more and more native speakers I've realized I actually speak English very well.
Sure I have accent when talking but at least I use correct form when talking :D

Sometimes it surprises me how native speakers make such obvious mistakes and makes the English sound horrible.

I was a tiny kid back in the early 90s, but Wolfenstein 3D and first DOOM still scares me to this day.

If there isn't Half-Life there, I would vote for Quake. All other options are similar in a way (GoldenEye is closer to Half-Life though) but Half-Life is 4 universes ahead of the others.

Maybe you haven't played the original Unreal... the only thing Half-Life did better was that you were able to meet 'living' NPCs. But seriously, everything else was done better in Unreal.

Worst take I read online today. Thanks for the chuckle.

And yes I have had and played Unreal since it was new.

You are welcome. I did mean it though :)

But seriously, Unreal introduced the storytelling through logs, the great open areas (instead of the bunkerlike environments of Doom and Quake) and real, actually entertaining combat. I don't think we should be arguing about these, but you can try :D

I always liked the gunplay from both Quake and Unreal Tournament but you're right, I didn't play the original on its time. Probably that's the reason I didn't catch its magic.

I don't think it's fair to put these all in the same category. Half-life came out so much later than Doom, and both are dramatically different while being equally historically important. Same with Goldeneye 007, which revolutionized fps games on consoles.

Yeah, I agree. Though which one is "the best" does come down to personal preference. You could interpret that question as "which one you had the most fun with" or "which one held up the best".

If we're judging them by importance though, Doom would be the hands down winner as without that the genre as a whole simply be what it became without it. Every other game on this list owes a huge debt to Doom.

I think a lot of people voting on Unreal, mistake it for Unreal Tournament. Those are two games, one heavily outclassed by every game on the list, the other while released in 1999, along with Quake 3 belong in the next era.

Vote for Doom, half life and quake are also greats in gaming history, but Doom was the first to BIG hit the scene!

They all have their different strengths and some of them are pioneers of the genre (if not much else really).

All in all, Unreal stands tall above all.

Half Life #1?

I can understand Doom getting in front of Duke Nukem (Hail to the King, Baby!), i could´ve even grasped Unreal getting some fame ... but HL? People really do like getting tunneled into a story it seems :E

A tremendous shooter does´nt need a great story imho, i´m perfectly fine with "aliens bad, need more ded aliens" as long as the gameplay fucking rules!!! =)

Slightly biased 14 year old me talking. The day when Duke3d AND Crusader No Remorse arrived in the same package was only surpassed by a slightly unhealthy 9 hours "oh my god it´s C&C!!!" stint.

Yeah, I don't get it either, gameplay wise most of those PC games blow HL away easily. Almost all of them hold up to this day with gameplay, but if you strip HL of its story and environmental storytelling (and it's not like those were super amazing either, to completely carry the game), you are left with a very mediocre shooter at best.

I believe that's the point, Half-Life was among the first to try a compelling story, so, it separated the genre from the previous shooters, just like DOOM basically invented boomer shooters, Half-Life did the same for story driven modern ones. Now, what makes a good game, is it its gameplay, its graphics, its story, it' sound, or its legacy?

I personally have no clue.

I genuinely cannot understand anyone voting for HL, gameplay wise it was major stepback compared to games before, and just a couple of years later you had games that took some ideas from it that were far superior to it. It's one of most overrated games of all time, if not the most overrated.

Goldeneye being there is a bit questionable, but where is Blood?

I mean, if you consider multiplayer then GoldenEye 007 is the clear winner. I can't even estimate the hours that my buddies and I played that game sitting on the couch swapping controllers around in 4 player matches back in the day. If you just talk about single player the I'd go with Half-Life. (Still waiting for Episode 3 - at the moment I had heard they'd move on with episodes instead of full releases I know they wouldn't finish what they'd start.)

I played all those mentioned games, but only HL when it was released on my own PC, and i was blown away when i started it. Doom and Duke Nukem were fun, but didn't click as HL for me. As for Quake and Unreal i tried them later in 2000s while playing with friends LAN, but somehow everyone always wanted to play Counter Strike so i switched to it too and playing it for 20+ years already ¯\(ツ)

This is from my generation, and I have played them all.

Nothing "fixed" the FPS genre for me more than dumping the mazes with "find the key to open door" gameplay. Half-Life changed all of that.

Agreed. Wolfenstein and DOOM have special places in my heart and always will, but I never cared much for the key hunts.

Oh yeah, I remember installing Wolfenstein 3D and then Doom from floppy disk, and playing Doom with friends over the old phone line. Those were the days when you didn't shop around for the best deal on some video card, instead you were scraping every cent together to try and afford that new 14.4 or 28.8 modem. Good times :D

Did not play GoldenEye (or does not remember :) ). I would choose between Unreal, Duke Nukem and Half Life because of great story (I voted for DN only because I think this was first game from these 3 I mentioned :) ). But all games in poll was great and I think Half-Life will win and it probably should as it added great story to the genre:).

My first thought was Descent and Descent 2. Those were really well received in their day but they've more or less faded into obscurity for whatever reason.
