So, for you younger folks who have never heard of it, 3D Movie Maker or 3DMM was a program that came out in 1995 that allowed users to create their own 3d movies. It came out for, you got it, Windows 95. The game itself was pretty rudimentary, with limited characters, scenes, and sound files available for use. My friends and I spent countless hours together making movies, sharing / watching them, and generally having a great time.
Here's a video showing a little bit about the program: 3D Movie Maker (1995) - Game for Windows 95
Now, this was cool and all, but a few years later we found out, and some of us participated in, an underground community that pushed the game to its very limits. People figured out how to create their own characters, scenes, and special effects by manipulating and moving various items in the game, way beyond the imaginations of the original creators. 3dmm.com was the center of the community and cult following that grew around this game, and the forums there are still around to this day. The graphics look quite dated at this point, but this game will always have a special place for me and many others who devoted years to their own creations.
Here are a couple of movies that represent the cream of the crop:
Diabolical Delightment - Will Maltby and Chris Ward
Rebirth of 3dmm - Adrian Pikios
Osama's Heroes - Jason Ruiz
Bodily Functions - Adrian Pikios
Dragon in America - Philip Pupa
N.U.T.S. - Redwampa
Holy smokes, most of these were made almost 20 years ago. Wtf, I'm old!
