I am a bit confused about B4 and B5 since

  • Below -100$ what?
  • 1 entry/winner is enough you mean for every win you have to do 1 giveaway or?

Ah thanks, that makes it more clear, so when you join you start with $0 and winning with lower that depending on the price of the game?
If so, I can live with that, wasn't fully sure if it means I need to make giveaways or not, but as long as I don't go -$100 I don't have to which helps since I tend to give away bundle leftovers but since there was no bundle I cared for in the last year, I also have no leftovers to give away ^^

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is just the total difference in value of games that you sent or won from the group. -$100 means that you won $100 more in giveaways than you sent. If you click on a group that you are part of here on steamgifts and then click "users" on the left side, you can search for your name (or another user). It will show how many giveaways you sent and received in the group and it will show the "Value Difference" on the right side. The value difference is what is being referred to in the rule.

Thanks, that makes sense indeed!
Was thinking it may have meant that but at the same time I was very confused!

well put.
still on that note & because I find it one of the most problematic, if not misleading stats on SG;
afaik it uses 'plain' value or 'just' CV instead of 'real' CV, not sure how 'no' CV is taken into account tho.
meaning for the calculation of said value inside the group it makes no difference whether a GA was Full or *Reduced value..

I had to give up on a group where I knew I wouldn´t be able to keep up in numbers but tried to make up for it in quality. Because of that stat it wasn´t sustainable.

Otherwise let this be a BUMP & good luck with the group : ) @mirka

That 'value difference' stat is determined entirely by the price of the games. Full, Reduced or No Value status has no effect. Afaik, even the 10% progressive reduction in CV after the 5th copy doesn't apply to it.

Some users take full advantage of this in certain groups that have no quality rules for their GAs. They'll flood those groups with multiple copies of 0cv, overpriced, asset-flip games to climb up the ranks. I recently saw one user who dumped 6 copies of such a game for +600 in 'value difference'! They're now near the top of that group's user stats page. Their total cost: < $0.50

This ends up hurting average users such as yourself who try to maintain their stats the "honest" way - by buying normal games and maybe sharing the occasional freebie.

It´s worse than I thought then.

I was hoping at least no CV** would have been taken into account. But if it just takes the nominal value from Steam that determines CV in the first place.. no wonder I couldn´t keep up.

thx for the clarification.

You will need to remove bit about curators. Also you point to group rules on Steam and there are no rules there visible.

This seems like a weird argument.

Different groups have different rules.

I tend to accumulate lots of keys, some for AAA games, some for cheap 3P games, some in between. There's nothing "wrong" with any of the games, but they're also not all equal, and I try to find the most appropriate way to give them away. If I can't give away my 3P game in this group, I will find a different place to give it away.

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no argument here actually. You are also missing my point completely as I'm not talking about any game itself nor I differentiate nor I'm "dictating" where something should be given away and so on. BUT I'm not giving any more "free bumps" here. If you want something more, hit me up anywhere else

You say the group is for gamers and not collectors, yet I don't see any rules (for joining in particular) which would reinforce that. Expect plenty of people who join and then take as much has they can before being found out and kicked. Well, if the groups gets anywhere at least.

Anyways, I'm not interested, since I don't make "exclusive" giveaways for single groups (and the above stuff too), but I kinda wanted to point all that out. ^_^'

Since each user that wants to join the group needs to be manually approved, you could look at the users profile and then make a decision. You can check to see if they play their games and get achievements or if they just farm thousands of games and idle them with no achievements on anything. Some "gamers" seem to not really play anything and just collect and farm games to pump up the numbers on their Steam account.

and some "gamers" idle their time and use hacks to rake in achievemnts so those also mean sh!t ¯_(ツ)_/¯

yes. there's plenty. I can't guarantee they exist for every game, but I've seen such hacks for both singleplayer, and online-only multiplayer games. So yeah, nothing's safe.

Also, I thought you could just scroll down the user's list of all games and see the number of achievements next to every game, but I guess you can only see that for the last 3 played games on the main profile page. That would make it a lot harder to check because you would need to check individual games. I would imagine there's a site or some kind tool that will let you view it all one on page though.

Edit: I don't really keep up with that kind of stuff on Steam because I don't use it. I pretty much just use Steam to launch my games and don't care about the social media aspect. I don't even know how to make a badge and I would like to keep it that way :)

you can sort by achievement completion and it shows achievement progress next to each game, If that's what you're looking for.

Yeah, that works. I didn't see those buttons. That makes it a lot easier to see how many achievements someone has.

Wow, I was just looking at the achievements on my own account and I am very surprised about how low some of them are. Some of them must have been bugged or they added more achievements after I played. I am definitely not an achievement hunter, just the opposite actually. I just play the game to enjoy it and refuse to go back to look for achievements, but I usually play my games very thoroughly. I really hate starting a game and not completing it. I have probably only started 4 or 5 games that I gave up on. I also play somewhat slow and methodically trying to explore and find everything in the game that I can. If I look up how long it takes to beat a game, it often takes me at least twice as long as what it says.

One example is Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes. Somehow I only have 1 of 29 achievements. I loved this game and I spent 12.6 hours in a single playthrough even though howlongtobeat says it takes 7 hours or 9 for a completionist and I also never leave games running and walk away from the computer. I always exit the game if I need to do something, even if it will just be a couple minutes. There are a bunch of other games that seem to be missing a lot of achievements as well.

I don't care about achievements, but I don't like that it looks like I idled some of my games. I have never idled anything and don't care about cards, badges, or any other Steam numbers. Oh well, I'll just keep playing my games to enjoy them like I always have and try to not think about stuff like this :)

You can use astats, or other achievement listing sites, for such stuff. It is mostly faster and easier that way.

well I don't use much of the social features of Steam either. I've never sent intentionally at least :D nor recieved any awards so I cannot tell you how, or even if, you can check who sent it. good luck with it anyway, and congrats, I think? :D

I don't care about the numbers on my Steam account and don't want to support the social media aspects of it. I actually like having a low Steam level and some rude person bumped me up a level. lol, I don't really care, but I was kind of surprised to see something on my profile that I didn't put there.

When they first added them to reviews and other pages, I used my ad blocker to get rid of them and haven't seen them since. This is the first time I noticed them again. I skimmed through the profile settings real quick and didn't see the setting, but I just checked again and found it now. Thanks :)

What other people think doesn't bother me, but I kind of want to keep my profile somewhat blank because I don't like those features and don't want to show support for them.

Edit: I can't decide if I want to get rid of it though. I have been told that people use it in a negative way and if that is true, I almost want to leave it there. Not using those features is more important to me though, so I think it should go.

Steam points? Never used those either, lol. I literally just open Steam when I am ready to launch a game and leave myself marked as offline. Then I close Steam after I am done playing the game. I can't stand social media stuff. Steamgifts is the closet thing I use to social media :)

.. and therein might be the answer to how this branch of the discussion began ; )

iirc some games do not register chievos unless you are set to online in the client.
at least I remember missing out on a couple some 2-3 years ago, when my internet wasn´t that stable and I used to start Steam in offline-mode alot. Got pretty confused actually, when sometimes I would get an achievement but thought to myself 'wait a minute, you accomplished that last week already' until the only difference I found was whether I played On- or Off-line.

also, as you are mentioning it below, afaik there already is a system in place & you can actually get VAC-banned for the use of such hacks as SAM but I believe it only affects some multi-player games.. so it´s not completely risk-free at least :)

When I said I "leave myself marked as offline", I meant the status for friends because I don't like social media platforms and I don't like talking to people. I do allow the Steam client to connect to the internet.

I think a lot of the games probably added achievements after I played them. I just look back through the list of games that I completed, but have very low achievements on and it looks like they are all games I played a long time ago. I think I played most of them around 6-10 years ago.

A program with the name "SAM".
Can be used to activate all achievements of a game in seconds or if smarter done over time, that it looks as legit played. You see it anyway partly when people got a achievement for finishing stage 5 before they got the achievement for finishing stage 4 and such stuff.
It can be used for only one achievement too if a game have a broken one and the user want to 100% the game.

A very big part of the "gamers" use the program (some are in the different "play your game" groups). And present, often, very proud their, faked, stats.

Steam should develop a system like VAC ban, but for achievements. Not to stop users from getting achievements, but to automatically detect when an account uses something like this and put a notification on their account letting others know that they are a known achievement cheater. As long as they could prevent false positives, but they probably wouldn't be able to.

I personally don't like achievements. I just like to play the game to enjoy playing it. Whatever achievements I get during my playthrough I get and I'm not going back to try and get ones I missed or read them ahead of time and try to get them as I play through the game.

That just ruins the game for me. I play games as a relaxing, stress relieving, escape from reality. I want to enjoy a good story or explore open worlds, race cars, have fun in platformers or arcade games. Worrying about collecting achievements and wasting time going back to get them so I can impress random people on the internet with my numbers just seems counter productive to the reasons I play games.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with people who do like achievements. I'm sure there is a rewarding feeling that comes from collecting them and that is probably why a lot of people like it, but everyone is different and I personally just don't enjoy it. With a backlog of games to play so long that I'm not sure if I will be able to play all the games I want to in my lifetime, spending extra time to collect achievements seems like a waste when I can be playing another game instead.

The people that cheat probably don't feel like they are cheating themselves because they probably don't enjoy getting achievements. What they enjoy is showing others that they are somehow better than them. All they care about is saying, hey look at me, look at what I did, I'm amazing. I can understand why people would want to do that as well because I am a competitive person and have the urge to gloat when I am really good at something. Gloating isn't' great, but cheating and then gloating about what you didn't even achieve is much worse.
