I'd suspect the current system is set into place to bypass abusers / idlers / people with multiple accounts. In the faq, they pretty much say that they were going to tie the badges with achievements, but they stopped themselves in part because of how much the system has been abused in the past. Maybe they'll tweak the formula, but if I had things my way, the whole damned thing would be achievement based and not "let's see how much time / money / trading you'll put forth for your e-peen".

I dislike this idea, but less than I dislike the current beta, so...

Current system is so bad, I would expect it happen on Origin. It's one big money grab from Valve. They allow you to get 10% of cards required to craft level 5 badge, forcing you to either abandon rest of badges to trade cards and you still must buy cards on market because there isn't much chance you'll find enough people to trade for only thing you can get on Steam for "free" - metal (err, don't know if DOTA2 has some kind of metal for item crafting, which would make it two).
Either Valve will change everything about cards, or everyone will forget about it in a month or two.

Yeah, you mean like people forget about those purely cosmetic items in TF2 and Dota 2?
Valve will continue to add more games to the trading card system to keep collectors busy.

You can get most TF2 items for free - through metal crafting. And I didn't know "+25 to health" is cosmetic item.
Well, if few thousand people hunting for cards is Valve goal and that's how they understand "community" - then they will be more than happy.
But there's no way those few millions of people running steam everyday will be interested in current system.

I like it. I hate the current system, and if it's unchanged I just won't use the trading cards. If a system like yours were implemented, I would start collecting cards again and probably have a good deal of fun with them.
As long as the cards are rare enough, this system would be an improvement. People spend a lot of time on their Steam games, so if the cards were made too common, they would become worthless rather quickly. Dopefish is right about the issues with idling. But I would rather have those to deal with than the current system's issues.

the no more drops wall makes trading cards not last very long at all. i had done all i could within 24 hours of getting into the beta, and now with a shortage of cards and no card badges at all, i'm left waiting for people who don't care about the cards at all (versus me who barely cares because i want extra profile features) to want to trade cards i don't have yet for my extra bundle games. that's not fun at all -- it's boring and frustrating.
before the trading cards, i'd legitimately played over 40 hours of portal 2, 80 of tf2, and 25 of half-life 2. i also have 47/51 portal 2 achievements, 33/33 half-life 2 achievements, and 217/448 tf2 achievements. it's disappointing that none of that mattered, especially in the case of half-life 2 which i had no reason to actually play again.
so overall, the new profile design is better (hooray for less all-caps!) but the cards themselves are far too limited yet also too easy to get by leaving the game up overnight or while you go out to dinner. since i don't have any card-created badges i don't know what a level 5 badge is, but it sort of sounds like collecting a complete set 5 times, which makes the amount of cards even less adequate.

I'd rather see either:
Of course both of these ideas would reduce the income for Valve so I guess it is unlikely.

On the official group, I've posted my opinion and an alternate system. If anyone cares to take a look, I'd love to see any commentary community members may have toward it. Please post to the linked thread as I'd like to see it actively bumped above the "invite me" and "posting for badge" spam.
Sorry, no hidden giveaway, just signal boosting.
