I'm asking because over the past few years my gaming joy took a hard hit, I just don't find most games fun anymore.

Not sure if its just me growing older but I'm bored with most games now and looking for a game thats really worth a damn.

A few games that did it for me were Mass Effect, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas and the Walking Dead.

But even that grew old pretty quickly.

What about you? Tell me about a game thats worth playing.

A game that stayed with you long after you finished it.

Could be a game with wonderful storyline, superb gameplay (hopefully both).

Not just a game to pass the time because you're bored, but a game that makes an impact.

Anyone else just doesn't find games fun anymore?

Took a long break from most gaming (about 2-3 years now).

Maybe after 30 years its time to put away my controller and keyboard in the closet.

I do feel like I've wasted enough of my life as it is.

Even when I do play I feel incredibly guilty afterwards

Binding of Isaac and FTL. I'd think Super Hexagon could get boring quickly. If you want a beat 'em up, Foul Play caught attention. It's similar to Castle Crashers, except not at all in any way except the movement of the characters. And it's really fun

Played a bit of both actually. They're amusing but nothing to write home about. FTL is quite charming though.

I don't mean to be mean, but try to read books. Try with Khaled Hosseini, he has 3 amazing books. I've read all 3 during summer and those books sure make an impact. The Graveyard Book is also nice by Neil Gaiman.

Oh thats a very good suggestion. And I do agree theres more to life than games.

Which books should I read then?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have the same problem. Got bored with games over the last years...

My top 3 book suggestion:

Steven Erikson - Malazan Book of the Fallen (look it up, its worth it.)

Tad Williams - Otherland

Tad Williams - The War of the Flowers

That books stayed with me a long time after I finished them.

Comment has been collapsed.

oh hey, I just read war of the flowers! Its p. good, I'd recommend it if you like the fantasy genre, especially if you want something original. I had some issues with the plot and characterization, but that's just like, my opinion man.

Patrick Rothfuss is really good too, I'd very much recommend The Name of the Wind. Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files are great fun action-packed books, but are actually surprisingly deep in overarching plot as the series goes on. And if you like British sometimes-profound, sometimes-absurd humor you owe it to yourself to read some Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

+1 for Patrick Rothfuss. It's also worth taking a look at the books he recommends. "The Last Unicorn" and "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" are both 2 novels he's said he enjoys, and they're fantastic.

And now for something completely different: "Cloud Atlas" is an amazing book.

Cormac McCarthy writes a lot of good stuff, although it can be extremely violent and very depressing.

Try Robert Aspirin's "Myth" series. The first one is "Another Fine Myth," if I recall correctly. Those are comedic books that are very entertaining to read.

If you want something enjoyable to read that will also "stay with you," try "Caves of Steel" by Isaac Asimov. You'll probably end up reading the entire series, and it would still be worth it having read them.

I've had a similar problem with books, actually; only I feel more disappointed if a book turns out to be crap and a waste of my time, mostly because I'm not a fast reader.

I got burned out on games around 2007, and then the bug bit me again in 2010, and I think I might be on the verge of another hiatus. There's nothing wrong with going through phases. (I don't think it's a growing older thing; I think we ironically enough have a glut of choices, so when you pick something to play, you're essentially saying "no" to countless other games, so in our minds it had best be something awesome.)

Anyway, I recommend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

You can take a break for a while and do something else. Gaming won't be fun if you are forcing yourself into it. You may also want to try some highly "addictive" games or genres that you usually don't play.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've barely been playing over the past 2-3 years in fact. Which is why I sense that perhaps my gaming era is over.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Even if that is the case it is not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps you've really grown out of gaming like you've grown out of other things. Then you just have to find a new hobby. Or perhaps you haven't and will be interested in it again some time. I've hardly gamed this past year either but that was more to do with other things in real life that didn't leave me in much mood for gaming but it wasn't the case that I lost interest in it. Are you sure something similar doesn't apply to you as well?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It does (and can [and perhaps should]) scale back as you get older and more/other things vie for your attention. And I don't know your personality type, so maybe this is a definitive closing of that chapter in your life, I don't know. But I've gone through years where, for instance, I couldn't really get into novels any more [from age 31-35, I think], but then I started reading them again, because it had been long enough that I wasn't feeling as burned out.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Likewise this is how I function.

I stopped gaming years back due to time, money, and priorities. I suddenly found myself with more time (no job) in 2011, and I took it back up again.

But like you, I go through phases. I'll read like a student for a year, and then drop it for 3-4. I'll game for a year or two and then let it sit.

I garden every year, but some years I care more than others.

Even my career works this way. I'm on what appears to be the tail end of a decade-long excursion into motorsports.

Looking forward to whatever's next.

Whatever you decide Tzell, have fun with it, and keep yourself happy. :)

Yeah, and DXHR is getting a director's cut soon, which will fix boss battles that most people consider it's weakest point. Personally I didn't mind that much, easily one of my favorite games of the past few years. So consider getting the upgrade if you plan on playing it.

But you don't have to put 100+ hours into it, and even then if you truly love a game there are no problems getting it to 100+ hours.
That has nothing to do with willpower, besides you don't even have to put 100 hours into it. You can play it all you want and it will be fun.

I suggest you to play/read mystery games/novels since for me all it does is to continue playing since I want to solve the mysteries.

If you want a good, linear and self-solving game: L.A. Noire. On the contrary, if you want to solve the mystery by yourself, I would suggest you to read a mystery "game" novel called Umineko.

Try World of Tanks. A nice free tank battle game.

  • Based on the age old concept of "Easy to understand, hard to master"
  • A game where you can jump in for 15min-1h every day to get your gaming taste satisfied
  • A game that has progression so you always feel every battle goes towards something more awesome

gaming industry has streaks at the end and beginning of each decade if you think about it. it's not about console generations. early 90s games were awesome. as well as late 90's and early 00. and 2008 and 2010 had some very neat games. The relatively new games i never get tired of playing are Resident evil 4 (not the pc version), dead space 2, bioshock. but old games are the way to go. can't go wrong with classics. grim fandango, as Eephus said, or any LucasArts adventure is good, for that matter. good old-school shooters like duke nukem 3d and half life. if you wanna go full retro, the original prince of persia and duke nukem platformers are great. you could also try to look for some underrated gems. it was kind of alarming that you said you get depressed after gaming and you think you wasted time. if you feel like you are wasting time with a game, the don't play it. try demos and if you have FUN, then buy it. it's about having FUN, not even about having good games. you can have fun with games that are really bad as well. like killing sims in the sims!

I know many people will disagree with me, but I love this game.

Mafia II

Gameplay isn't the best, and the game has quite a few bugs. Although the story is purely amazing, I just loved it. Even though it was "free" doesn't mean it's a crappy game.

Actually, I'd recommand Mafia 1 , then Mafia 2 (played both, and even if it's older, Mafia 1 is way better and a bigger challenge :P).
Anyway I enjoy Unreal Tournament 3 (actually any Unreal game was/is fun for me) or Serious Sam (classic versions).

Some people have already said it, but I'll say it again: play The Stanley Parable. The most I'll say is that it is kind of like a narrative, choose your own adventure style game, and I typically hate that kind of thing. But it is just so utterly brilliant and breaks what you would expect from a game.

Play the Stanley Parable Demo first though! It's all completely different content from the main game and gives you a taste of what the narration/humor is like.

As with anything in life too much of a good thing can be bad. I often find myself completely turned off of gaming for a couple days and then I get back in. Personally I become overwhelmed by the prospect of starting a new game mostly because I have too many in my library to choose from that I will often just do something else. Unless I have a game in mind that I want to play through I usually just play an hour here or there of several different games and then get bored by my indecisiveness.

Have you ever played Stronghold or Stronghold Crusader? Both games are fantastic, with a huge Fanbase & free HD Patchs. :)
Currently my fav. games are: Worms Series, Dota 2 and Tactical Intervention. Singleplayer Games I enjoyed: The Walking Dead, Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite, Alice Madness Returns.. but yea I know that feeling, I hate the most AAA titles.
