I got the 1 gem I used back, and had what I bought taken away but was fully reimbursed (thankfully). I will probably wait for them to go cheap again, and buy booster packs.

yup - started with 2 Eur and few tens of community stuff (backgrounds and amotes), ended up with 55 Euro :> could be much more but buying gems was very laggy and crashing a lot so i didn't manage to buy as many as I wanted :(
I could choose high price ones and make a lot of different ones, as I have 545 games eglible for booster packs ;)

thats what i did. i saw no point in biding because people put over 200,000 or more in bids. so instead i spent my gems on boosters. crafted badges, sold the holiday card and crafted gems from worthless emotes and bck grounds. then repeated.

7200 gems, $4.68, plus I had already sold off most of the cards/booster packs(from buying cheap gems), enough to buy FF XIII-2 with $5 left over. So...I came out on top :).

I craft items up to 750 gems, then saw the gem listing and bought around 4000 gems/$0.011
Straight to booster pack then unpack, since buying another sack was so hard before steam reset the market, with 36 gems last.
Today, my card still there, I got back my $$ and 36 gems increase to 750 gems.
Still win for me.

So how do you guys actually making profit from this? Do you buy emots and backgrounds turn them into gems and then turn the gems into boosters and selling them? Cuz I don't see profit in that, plus I don't see any Sack of Gems on the marketplace since the auction begun again :/ . Can you tell me how are you making profit from this?

The deal is over. People were duplicating gem sacks and selling them for $.03. I bought about 30 gem sacks for ~$3. That was a lot of gems to get rid of.

There was some bug/exploit on the gems and people were selling them for $0.03 for 1000 gems. And you could craft a booster pack for 400-1200 gems. So, an investment of $1.50 would get 50k gems which you'd turn around and craft 50 or so booster packs. Which you could sell or unpack and then sell the cards. You can't do it now though.

Oh yeah, I actually did not miss that, I remember that they sell 1000 gem sacks for 0.03 euro..I wanted to buy a lot too and then sell boosters, but I could not buy any sacks, it was so crashy that time you know... So I tried, but did not succeed :/, I tought they will keep this, I was so happy about it! :D But I just realised that it was steam's fault to let this happen.
