I've been really wanting to get back into Warcraft 3's online lately, but I figured I may as well grab the Battlechest for it along with Diablo's and Starcraft's Battlechests. However, I have a few questions about them that you guys might be able to answer.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this, but I lost my original Warcraft 3 Battlechest and haven't ever played Diablo (1 and 2) or Starcraft before.

So, these questions are ONLY about the above mentioned games and not Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, or World of Warcraft. :S

  1. Let's say I bought the Battlechest used from Amazon. Assuming the thing I buy has the Battle.net key in it already (forgot how that works), even if the seller had already used it way back when or whatever, would I still be able to use it for myself to play online? I'm assuming it'd be the same type of thing for each game, but if it's different for each it'd be great to let me know and how so exactly. ;)

  2. Just kind of interested, but which of the 3 games/Battlechests is your favorite?

  3. If I remember what I read from the Amazon page, they all include the game, the expansion, and a strategy guide or two, but does Diablo's include Diablo 1?

Thanks in advance guys, this info will help me out a lot. ;)

  1. A CD-key is attached to one's Blizzard's account and only that account may use the key to access battle.net
  2. Warcraft 3 battle chest, spent a full $40 on that and a lot of time spent into it. Also spawned some great multiplayer mods, alongside with its already riveting singleplayer campaign.
  3. No, an older version of the bundle did, but the current one in place included the expansion instead.

The following is based on your answer to 3 about Diablo 1 being replaced by the expansion.
Was there an expansion other than Lord of Destruction?

I only ask because my Diablo battle chest has:

  • Diablo 1
  • Diablo 2
  • Diablo 2: Expansion set Lord of Destruction
  • Strategy guide that covers both Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction expansion.

EDIT: NVM, checked new and old version on the amazon store. Both come with the expansion, only difference is the new version drops Diablo 1.

Maybe they just flat-out took Diablo 1 out because it saved them a bit of money? :P

I saw the newer version of the battle chest and it did not bring Diablo 1. And this was a retail store.

You probably got lucky Killer, perhaps there was some small window where they did have Diablo 1 in there. But there were 2 versions of the Diablo battlechest, one with Diablo 1 + 2 which is now discontinued, and the newer one with Diablo 2 + LOD. I have all 3 battlechests. Not including their WoW battlechest though.

Finally found out the differences:
The Diablo Gift Pack (2000): contained copies of Diablo and Diablo II, but no expansions.

The Diablo: Battle Chest (2001) contained copies of Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, the official strategy guide, and the original Diablo. Recently, however, the Battle Chest edition no longer contains the original Diablo.

Thanks for the help! Just curious, but are Battle.net keys different than CD keys? Because my stepbrother kept losing his Warcraft 3 Battlechest but had already used his account on Battle.net somehow, and then when he bought his final Battlechest he let me use it, and we shared the CD key between our computers whenever we wanted to play.

Also, for #3, do you know if they still sell the older Diablo Battlechest? If so, would it be for around the same price or some insane amount like $40? ^_^

I don't think there is a "Battle.net key" for only multiplayer access. A CD key ties a product to your blizzard account like how games are tied to your Steam account, and therefore one product with multiplayer access per one account. This also allows you to download the game client online off of blizzard through your account, which is neat.

There may be the older battlechest still in stock collecting dust in warehouses, but I wouldn't hope for any sort of clearance sale on them. You'll probably have to grab it for retail price.

Thanks for the help, seriously. :D

I guess I'll just end up buying all 3 new instead of used, that makes the most sense I suppose. Also, so if I already was able to play online all those years ago, if I'm able to remember my Battle.net account credentials, would I be able to just avoid buying the Warcraft 3 BattleChest and download the game instead?

Old keys (pre-WoW) don't work like that. Yes, you can tie some of them (SC1, WC3, and D2) to your Battle.net account, but that doesn't mean you're the only one who can use that key. The only added feature you get for tying it to an account is that you then have the ability to download the game directly from Blizzard (and the version you download doesn't need a CD in the tray to run). When you download the game, you then still need to enter your CD key during installation (your key is also saved online so you can view it without having to search around for the case).

If the guy he's buying from used the CD key on his battle.net account, then it obviously can't be registered on any other battle.net account, but it can still be used to play the game online. Any number of people can actually all use the same CD key to play online, but just not at the same time.

The use of a CD key to play the game online also doesn't automatically tie the key to your Battle.net account. Your Battle.net account isn't in any way connected to any of the accounts you'll use for these old games.

Ah, thanks. Guess I WILL have to buy all 3 new instead of cheating my way out and only buying 2 of them. ;)

Battle.net accounts (the one's officially titled "Battle.net Accounts"; don't confuse it with the old game accounts, just because the online system there was also called "Battle.net") are also relatively new feature (around 2 years old now). There's a good chance that the keys you'd get out of a used copy were never tied to a B.net account, simply because the owner quit playing long before they were introduced.

The accounts for each game are also completely unique to that game, and they only have a lifespan of a few months before they're automatically deleted (or at least, they used to; not sure if they still do and I can't remember what the lifespan was exactly). So the old WC3 account you had is probably long gone.

-2. Starcraft Battlechests. Since I started playing online games, starcraft give me the best multiplayer experience til now.

Questions 1 & 3 already answered.

Starcraft is the sci-fi strategy title of Blizzard. Diablo is the horror/fantasy RPG title of Blizzard. And WarCraft 3 is a slight mixture of both, being a strategy title having characters to upgrade and keep to, fantasy genre again.

I guess it depends on what exactly you prefer. My favourite is Diablo 2 + LoD, but on a side note, I am a bit disappointed with Diablo 3 ... Blizzard could not have slept over the last 12 years. Or at least 5-6.

The only Blizzard games I played are Starcraft and Warcraft II. Good stuff, thought.

1: Only one instance of the cdkey can be used online at a time, but you can use the game on as many different computers as you want.

2: Diablo, Diablo II and LoD are definitely the best value (with D2/LoD being the best game). SC and Broodwar are a lot of fun though. I never got into WC3, though I have the game and the expansion sitting on a shelf.

3: My D2 battlechests both included Diablo, Diablo II, LoD, a small manual for both games, and a strategy guide that I'm fairly sure lacked LoD info. The SC pack included SC, Broodwar and a strategy guide for each of the games.

That's interesting what you say about #1. So, if I bought a used copy of the game, would I be able to play online?
