Cuz inappropriate. It's just a diff category. People are culturally more sensitive to nudity than pew pew head explodes.
Edit: also as brought up below, usually it has to be reported and flagged to get removed. Steam doesn't go around looking through profiles to find things. Someone your friends may or may not know didn't like their pics. They have neither the desire nor the manpower. But, their house their rules.

What's wrong with nudity? Why do people always shame children for seeing nudity and indoctrinate them as if seeing a picture of a naked person was this horrible thing?
Comment has been collapsed.
they most probably don't live in Europe that you see sculptures and paintings everywhere + naked lmao
Comment has been collapsed.
If I had kids I'd rather they saw nudity than extreme senseless violence.
And nudity is only included on +18 videogames, so I dunno why an innocent child would have to be messing around with those.
Comment has been collapsed.
That applies to violence too, doesn't it?
And that's not banned.

I think I speak for all responsible parents when I say that I'd much rather my children were viewing blood-spattered dead bodies and severed limbs than a bared breast or an unnecessarily short skirt.
Can't honestly see what the OP's issue is here.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah - totally bro...
There is nothing I like better to do than sit down with the children and watch a good violent film. I wish Hostel didn't have those unsavoury sex scenes though. It's so unnecessary, and makes what would otherwise be a great, wholesome family movie totally unsuitable for viewing with kids.

mass murder and mutilation better than bare breasts?
Perversion is in the eye of the beholder, children don't see nudity as a highly sexual thing until teachen to.
People underestimate the innocence of children.Things like the famous 9 dolphins picture experiment prove the point fairly well.
"Responsible parents" should research more how violence impacts on a childs psychology.
I just hope that was sarcasm.

Oh, absolutely serious.
Give me dismemberment and mutilation ahead of exposed ankles any day of the week. It's children's obsession with sex in computer games today that will produce 99.9% of tomorrow's serial killers. A bit of violence and gore at an early age, on the other hand, has been proven to build character, improve resistance to several major diseases, and increase the individual's life span by an average of 75.81%.

I am 114.3% certain you misinterpreted my initial post, but 92.65% sure we have fairly similar views on nudity/violence :)

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.

If a kid creates an account on steam with a fake age, that's his problem. I like how parents just like to point fingers when they let their spawn do w/e the fk they want on the internet without supervision.

Because sex is WAAAAYYY worse than violence. True story.

That's indeed a bit to far, making holes and then sticking your d into that hole.

In Germany it's the other way around, there's even nudity in some TV ads, no matter what time of day or what channel.
"Sadly" there are more games with violence, so a lot of stuff gets censored here.

Here you go again
blame the church cause you can kill for god but sex is WRONG!! thought its the reason we all exist.
Anyways jumping into the blame the church bandwagon is always cool.
On a serious note, he could have presented the same argument without being neither offensive nor demagogic.

I'm pretty sure you can make a baby without
performing coitus, so that statement is rather false.

Well, yes and no.
Since we only managed this in the last few years, our ancestors would have done rather well to survive in abstinence up to the point this technology emerged, while maintaining viable gamete production at the age of oooooh... let's say at least 50,000 years old.
I think on reflection, we could be considered somewhat fortunate to exist if sex had been abandoned when Homo sapiens diverged from the other hominids...

Well, at least you can always sync your steam screenshot folder with a semi-private dropbox folder, that way I think it will be almost impossible to get your screenshots deleted and still being in the cloud.
Again, in the ToS, I haven't checked it, but may be there xD...
Comment has been collapsed.
What? I thought the whole point of this thread was about uploaded screenshots, which can be viewed by anyone of any age, whether they own the game or not...?
Comment has been collapsed.
No, all kids will. I was never a bad kid when I was younger. I was extremely placid. I never lost my temper and hated anger. I played one or two 18 rated games (GTA) and half the time I had no idea what was going on. I played quite a lot of 15's, etc, and I'm not violent. In fact, I was bullied for not wanting to look at naked girls, etc, because that wasn't me. I knew not to sexualise women, because that was how I was raised. Parents now seem to suppress sexual education. So kids learn things and share them with friends. And you have miss information and kids knowing weird information about sex.
Anyway, I may have went a bit off topic, but what I am saying is, no kids will listen to warnings. And it doesn't make a 12 year old bad if they are looking at sexual things. In fact, it is better to show them these things and tell them what is going on. Of course I am not saying you should sit down and watch a porno with your child, but it doesn't hurt them in any way if they see a nipple, or a vagina, or a penis.
Comment has been collapsed.
Indeed, misinformation there is the worst that can happen to a child.
Comment has been collapsed.
Exactly. It is a parents responsibility to teach their child how the world works. As awkward as it seems, this includes sex. We need more sex ed classes in European schools (and maybe America, but I cannot talk for their education system, and anywhere else, for that matter). It has been proven that earlier a child gets sex ed classes, the later they actually have sex. In the Netherlands (please, correct me if I am wrong) sex ed starts as young as 4. The average age which people lose their virginity at is 18/19. Not does early sex ed stop the spread of misinformation, it also reduces teen sex/pregnancies. I was taught about sex at a young age. Not what "bj's) are, or "docking" (please, for your own sake, do NOT look that up!), etc. I got bullied for most of this, but because I knew what sex really was, and how pointless relationships are, I still hadn't kissed a girl till I was 17.
Again, I probably went way off topic, but the point is, kids need to have sex education. They need to know what it is. It prevents them from finding out misinformation on their own. So when they do see nude pics, etc, they do not feel awkward, or immediately sexualise everything.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's bullshit. There's no way a brain can be harmed by nudity.
Other thing could be sex, but I think someones don't know how to draw the line between them.

You seem to think all naked images are pornographic. They are not. Show a 8 year old a picture of a topless model (artistic, not pornographic) and they will laugh from embarrassment. It does no damage at all. I believe you are rather ignorant, and if anything, you yourself have been made to believe nudity is wrong and should be suppressed. There is nothing wrong with the human body.
Comment has been collapsed.
You fail to recognise the difference between nudity and pornograhpy.
This is nudity http://i.imgur.com/LXvJRGw.jpg there's nothing wrong nor perverted with it, it's natural and beautiful.
This is pornography http://i.imgur.com/Rq8dIpG.jpg and even with that image being less explicit than the former, I would not show that to a kid.
No more NSFW links
Moreover ,nudity has been a recurrent topic on art since always examples being Aphrodite of Milos, The Three Graces or even paleolithical statues
Comment has been collapsed.
So true that when a pic is in black&white it's art :P
On a more serious note i do agree with you, especialy the fact that nudity was in art in classic times, being nude was fine in greek, yet having an erection in public was not.
The problem with nudity has its root on the religion/church, check art before and after the come of the church.

"So yeah. Is there any part of the ToS or EULA or any of those wall of texts no one bothers to read where it says that nudity is explicity forbidden?"
It's the part where they say they can fuck with you any way they want any time they want and you can't do anything about it. Pretty much covers everything.

Is it boobies, or just nipples that they have a problem with? I have some Alice screenshots on my profile of Asian porcelain statues (sans nipples) but either Steam doesn't care or nobody has reported them as inappropriate yet. I would find it strange if they did moderate them since the screenshots are from a game that they themselves sell, but then stranger things have happened. How is it that ultra-violence is ok in a game (blowing someone's head off with blood spraying everywhere) but a boobie is somehow evil? I'd much rather that my hypothetical children not be afraid or ashamed of a human body than to think that killing people is perfectly normal, even though it still is only "cartoon" violence.

yeah i got this ban too form steam and i still dunno why is so offensive http://i.imgur.com/N2mYW.jpg. yet a headshot in a npc with lots of blood is allowed

I think the best solution is to put your screenshots as friend only, and also make possible for users to put an age check on the screenshots when they upload it, as it would make it pleasant for everyone, as you would be advised that the content can be unpleasant for someone (adding what it contains in the warning would be also a good idea, like saying nudity or something like that).
Still let's not be cinnical here, nudity is natural (we born naked, I suppose everyone know that) and sex is also natural (You know, any animals out there have a way of mating, so we have it too). What I would consider can be innapropiate for any minor is the full context of the picture, like something that can make look a woman or men like just toys and not people. For example, a woman/man swimming naked on a lake shouldn't be flagged, but a men/women dancing on a strip club while the opposite sex is giving it money would be.
I hope I have made myself clear in that point. That said, violence is gross by nature, as anyone with a little empathy will feel bad if it looks to a dead animal or lots of blood, in the real life of course. Still for me in the videogames it isn't the same, as I already know it is digital and nobody is getting really harmed. Still, if a kid isn't taught this then I think the best would be flag the image and then only who think can tolerate it would see it.
Nothing more, nothing less, at leastt this is my humble opinion ^^.

Attitudes to nudity in some countries are utterly bizarre, and to be perfectly honest, ridiculous. European society has hardly crumbled because a lot of women choose to go topless on their beaches. The children don't give a damn either.

I don't know how a discussion is useless. Discussions are the most useful thing ever at least to me. I love to share my opinions and concerns and be enlightened by the ones that other people hold.

On the question as to why nudity is "banned" and violence isn't... well: Because if violence was banned, then they wouldn't have anything to blame the next time a shooting starts. When rape is involved it's much easier- just say the guy is the guilty one and you're done with it. With mass-murder they need a better victim than the guy who is already dead. So then they can say how it's video games' fault.
Yeah, that was just a very cruel joke. Sorry, still pissed of at the stupidity of the last time they blamed games. ^_^
Still makes sense when you think about it but I don't wouldn't give them credit on thinking that far ahead. :D
Comment has been collapsed.
OK, ok- seriously:
I would say because people like violence to be bloody. A game where you shoot people with paintball guns and they just "play dead" isn't found nearly as entertaining as a game where you leave a big bloody mess behind you. Example- for some reason, despite having awesome old school shooting mechanic, Hard Reset got a lot of negativity because the enemies you fight are robots. You still pull them to pieces, but there isn't any gore or showers of blood, they just blow up for the most part. Most reviewers even keep saying how killing organic enemies was just more satisfying. So basically- it's because violence sells. People like violence.
Sex and nudity on the other hand can often be found very offensive due to religious believes, parents being sissies or whatever other reasons. All in all it's considered "more offensive" in a social way. I have no idea why, but in the long run it ends up less profitable than violence so it takes the short straw.

I agree, I hate it when they blame games... The games didn't make us evil, we made the games evil... All those stupid CoD fags (if you like CoD I'm not calling you a CoD fag unless you are six years old and like it) practically masturbate to the violence, and so people base their games around what society wants...
Comment has been collapsed.
The illogical nature of human culture, you can't post pictures of a pixelated nipple, but feel free to post a guy who has just killed 24 guys on a single round with just a hacksaw.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's because society has become desensitized to killing and death, but for people like me, you grew up knowing nudity and pornography is wrong. I kind of agree with them removing the content, but if they changed it to where it becomes flagged as inappropriate and has some kind of lock or potential spoiler type thing on it, or even make some accounts not allowed to see it (I would make mine one of them, I don't want to see nude people in a game).
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, you want a serious answer about sex vs. violence, and their relative acceptability in publicly available media?
They both bring up powerful emotions that make people uncomfortable. In fact, in some regards, they tap into the same emotive wellspring. Since the advent of civilization, violence has become increasingly unnecessary, though sex is still required. Whether people have an innate desire to participate in violence, or whether only some of them do, or if they don't is a largely trivial (and academic) subject. The obvious fact is that most civilized people will rarely, if ever, initiate violence without a good reason. They still need no encouragement to have sex, though. Violence being still necessary for some things, most notably in that forceful pursuit of international politics called war, civilization has incentivized violence with things like nationalism and religious devotion. Consequently, violence has been given a privileged and accepted place in the public eye, while sex has remained largely swept under the rug to avoid embarrassing questions and powerful feelings.
TL;DR: If you had to reward people to get them to fuck, it would be publicly accepted too.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thanks for one of the few coherent answers on the thread Barton.
I kind of understand now what reasons could have made violence be accepted in society, at least more easily than nudity.
Comment has been collapsed.
Reward for sex is more taxpayers, soldiers or "mindless sheep" politicians can lead or income from contraception/tissues. Isn't that enough of a reason to make sex more socially acceptable?
In my opinion ignorant religious people (not saying all religious people are ignorant) throughout the history awre insecure about their sexuality and make up stupid rules about sex. And then retards without their own brains believe every shit these "holy man" preach and get their brains programmed to "violence for the "god"=good, sex for pleasure = bad".
But somehow sexuality isn't so much suppressed in other media as in games. Actually sex gets more and more forced entry into daily lives on tv and commercials. Try driving to your workplace or somewhere and count all the jumbo ads for sexy bra with a naked chick on it, shower gel that will make all the women have sex with you with a guy making out,... Why games don't get all this "attention"? Because ignorant people sill think all games are only for little kids.
TL;DR: Blame sexually insecure religious leaders and ignorant people. You can get a lot of things from more horny people (more sex=more babies=more money).

American logic. Mindless shooting is fine, but as soon as they see a boob or an ass... DAMN!! OMG DE VIDEOGAMEZ R SO BAD, BAN DEM ALL
Seriously, I just hate that crap. We can see explicit violence in movies and games, but not a single tit or nipple, that's too outrageous for those moral fags.
Comment has been collapsed.
Whew, I'm glad we all have you here to explain American logic to us because you obviously know so much about it than anyone else. Of course many or most of these games in question are actually made by Americans, but let's not let any pesky facts distort the point of your obviously well-intentioned and informative post. Like for example that there's much more sex and violence in those videogames than on American movies and television.
But let's just go with your version of reality. I like that one better.

I mean, some of my friends have had their screenshots deleted because there was a boobie showed in them or things of the sort.
And yeah I was wondering what makes Steam so jealous to enforce that. After all that is inside the content they provide.
And well, it seems to me a bit stupid to let people commit mass murders and post images of desmembered people and that yet if there's nudity on them it would be banned.
So yeah. Is there any part of the ToS or EULA or any of those wall of texts no one bothers to read where it says that nudity is explicity forbidden?
