Expert rating 5 star, User Rating 5 Stars....

Sounds like bullshit to fool customers... and that's not even gaming laptop.

And that thing for 1000$.... no.

cons:
slow HDD
weak GPU(for the price range of 1000$) with useless 4Gb of vRAM and DDR3 which is slow....that thing is completely useless and even more with that no sense amount of vRAM for DDR3, it will barely even use 2Gb,

  1. Yes, oh boy yes.
  2. No. Problem is that your need a good inch clearance from the back of ANY laptop to allow air to circulate underneath it. Most modern designs do not take this into consideration so scam you with cooling pads. All you need is to wedge up the back with a deck of cards and you are fine.

It's actually fairly decent hardware for the price as far as laptops go I will admit, though for that price you could a rather killer Desktop setup. The con is from the looks of it that thing is going to burn your cock off. Unless there's at least 2/3 good large fans installed prepare for your balls to get roasted. Although weirdly my current laptop suffers from overcooling.

Not a great end all gaming laptop, but for the price range it is about what you are going to find everywhere. If you find a laptop with an 860M it will be a bit better due to a higher clock and GDDR5 memory on the graphics card. the slow hard drive shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I have a GT 540M on my "gaming" laptop (I had a Intel GMA4500 on the PC before, it was an upgrade, don't judge), and the only games that got bottlenecked by the GPU were Evolve and Civ 5 (but the CPU is also dying on them). But I have a Pentium B960 (that's a dual core 2.2). I have too say I have A LOT of GPU memory (4GB integrated from the Intel one and 2GB dedicated+another 2 integrated from the Nvidia one+8GB of RAM, that's good, too).

The performance is pretty good for the specs, I can RUN any game, but the CPU just makes everything keep a steady unstable 10-80 fps for every game out there...

And heating is not an issue, it gets hot, but that never caused a single issue, except maybe that after 2 years the fan is bloating the microphone and I can't Skype after a while (keep in mind that mine is a Lenovo, the 3 year old battery still lasts as it did day 1).

TL;DR: That laptop is DECENT, but not worth it, I got mine for a little under 500€ and it was a standard entry level gaming laptop (with incredible build quality).

PS: Aluminum feels great, it will look weird after a while under your hand (I could show you how mine is under the left side of the keyboard, since I played LoL most on it)

Yes, the Pentium was already outdated, but it's ok.

Laptop's probably not the best way to opt for gaming. Best to spend those money on a custom built PC instead. Just my 2 cents :)

This. For the same amount of money you'd pay for that laptop, you can get an even better desktop.

While true, if the user still requires a laptop, either for constant travel, or say for note taking, it makes more sense to buy a single device rather than double up on two.

No. It would be better to buy PC and laptop.

Users clearly wants to game, at least to some extent, on a laptop. A 300 dollar POS laptop wont do at all, so user will end up dropping 5-600 on a decent laptop, leaving 400 for a gaming desktop. Yep, that is sure to build a gaming rig.

If ALL the user required was a gaming device, than yes, 1k on a desktop would fit the bill, but adding in the requirement for mobility kills that plan right off. User already has a laptop, as stated in the OP, so clearly the new laptops goal is more than just note taking and watching movies.

do you just want a bit mobility @ home, or do you actually want to travel with it?
in the first case...why do you choose a model with such a small screen?

Heating is a VERY big problem for gaming laptops. I've had friends who had gaming laptops which supported games like BF3 but heated up way too much while playing so they had to stop playing.

It's really not worth it price to specs. No way!

Over heating is a major problem for almost all laptops, especially when it comes to gaming.

Problem with 'gaming laptops' is they will (almost) never be as good as a pc with the same specs. The laptop has a higher RAM than the pc but cannot run half as well.
If you do have the room then go for a pc over a laptop any day when you are using it for gaming.

  1. You should get the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71 instead. The GTX 850M isn't worth the price (This laptop have the GTX 960M). This laptop is 100$ more expensive but its worth the price. You can even game at 1080p (mid-high settings) with this laptop.
    ASUS Page : http://store.asus.com/us/item/201503AM110000025/A17602

  2. Cooling pads helps a lot if the laptop have a good vent under the laptop. If the laptop have a bad airflow, its not really helping.

"Gaming laptops" don't exist in reality. The ones that are labelled as such are either not really suited for gaming because overheating and generally mediocre performance on games that actually require some hardware, or they are laptops in the sense that you can keep them in your lap while being plugged in, since their battery dies in 60-120 minutes if you play (so they can't even survive a train trip). This is what most reviews forget to mention when they show how Gaming Laptop X can run that year's CoD at 1080p High/Ultra. For about 30 minutes.

Yes, you can get a laptop on which you can play games at 720p, low/medium settings (depending on game's age and optimisation), if you really want a computer you can bring with you anywhere. But don't expect any of them to be on the level of a desktop, especially for the same price range.

And as it was mentioned above, heat is a problem. When these laptops switch on the mobile GPU and start to use the real clock speed of their CPU, you can keep warm with them on a chilly autumn afternoon.

768p

no

gaming laptop

no please don't get a desktop if you can but if you really must...

I love watching movies in 1080p

then you'll hate the 768p screen

is overheating an issue with laptops

yes

will cooling pads help

yes, but just elevating the laptop usually does the trick

dell

lol no

5400rpm hdd

NO

For the price, those specs are not worth it. I got a 17.3" laptop with better specs (barely) in almost every way for the same price. 1080 too. For example, here's a laptop with the (almost) exact same specs for 100 dollars cheaper here

If you're going for a 15.6, it'll be even cheaper and you'll be able to push a little bit more for 1000.

Here's an i7-4720HQ, 960M, and a 7200RPM HDD for under 1000. lalala

Well I'll be honest, I'm not too sure but I think it looks expensive and you'll probably be able to find something better.
Has for heating yes, it can be a tough problem, dunno how to go about cooling though.

sorry in advance for the bad english. voted for potato

My laptop for the past 2.5 year (half 2012 to the end of 2014) was a Inspiron 7520 (Brazil) with

Processor Intel Core i7
video card AMD Radeon™ HD R7 M265 2GB DDR3
RAM Memory 8GB DDR3.
Screen display of 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution IPS .
Screen display of 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Storage HDD 1 TB 5400 RPM.
Windows 7

It was a good laptop, i played most of games on high or medium in 1080p, like BF3 (Highest in fullHD) far cry 3, crysis 1 to 3, but in some games i think the video card didn't work properly like planet side 2 and BF 4 ( windowed, lowest, 720p and with low FPS simply couldn't play at all). mostly because my video card was too slow, some games and the site http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri (Can you run IT) showed my video card with only 1GB

The Heat is a problem, If you play for long hours(above 3-4 hours) and don't have a "cooling pad" or the ambient temperature are high. Here in Brazil (Tropical Zone) I had to play in a room with a AC and the cooling pad as CommissarStrayed said, you can put something in the back of the laptop so the air can flow under it. For example: Shadow of mordor on lowest in FullHD crashed sometimes due to the heat. video card driver crashed

IF you can't have a desktop and need a laptop just like me 3 year ago, you can buy a "gaming" laptop just search for a good one or wait for a sale, just remember don't expect to play these new games in fullHd like me, play them in 720p with some features on.

Now i have a desktop playing BF4 on max, and GTA V almost max on FullHD. for the same price of my Inspiron

I don't know if you have them near you, but they have a website. tigerdirect.com sells decently good computers for cheap as refurbished machines, it's the way I've saved money without skimping on performance in the past. I've not gotten a bad one from them.

It's too expensive for too little.
It's always best to go around building a proper gaming desktop PC, because you can get individual parts MUCH cheaper.
Even if you end up making a somewhat high end rig, it would still cost you a bit less than this laptop

It needs to be a laptop? remember that you're paying for the component miniaturization (20-30% more than equivalent desktop parts).
