Heyy everyone. I've just watched the Phantom Pain's E3 gameplay video and it makes me wonder, are there any games currently out there (with exception of Van Helsing) where you home base/hideout/safe house can be attacked at random? (Preferably an open world game too).

I always wanted to just be free roaming AC and have a hideout/Villa/homestead attacked by Templars or Far Cry and have my safe house/base under attack or even Saints Row 3 and have one of your properties under attack (I know Saints Row 2 has something similar to this)

State of Decay - Lifeline Expansion

matches all things what you are asking for: home base will be attacked at random whenever too many zeds are in the area and it's open world.

Hey, can you tell me about Lifeline expansion? It was quite expensive (almost the same price like base game) and I didn't buy it. Bought base game and breakdown. What am I missing?

State of Decay I think, while you go out for resources, your base could be attacked by a horde of zombies. Don't quote me on that, I haven't played it yet (but I've read about it)

yes and no
in the base game you nearly don't have to react on attacks since most of the time it's only a few zeds which will be killed by NPC's either way without you doing anything.

But with Lifeline they added a complete new feature into the game, you have a warning level under your map and whenever it reaches the highest level because there are too many zeds in the area, it will start an attack on which you have to defend your base from zeds attacking from multiple directions.

I haven't got around to playing the breakdown DLC, but as you go on, the difficulty ramps up. The only reason why you could usually disregard threats to the base was because anybody on a guard outpost would normally wittle them down to mostly harmless levels by the time they arrived. Not quite so much when a few hordes arrive at the same time, and I imagine less-so with boosted difficulty and the chance for a guard tower to be unoccupied (either between shifts or because everyone else was away doing stuff).

In GTA: San Andreas your territories randomly get attacked by enemy gangs. However, this is only around the start and end of the game.

The Saints Row games (have only played 1 & 2) do have gang attacks, probably similar to the ones mentioned from GTA:SA

Once you completely take over territory, there won't be any more attacks though..

Also, haven't played them, but I thinkI've read that the original XCOM games had occasional alien attacks against your base..

Isn't XCom a linear game though?

Original ones were not. New one definitely is. Xenonauts remake of the originals could be an option.

As regards to the story, yeah. Though linear games with 'enemy encounters' can still have a variety of mission types. In the original X-COM sometimes the invaders would locate your bases and would send a raiding party. The level layout was generated from how/where you chose to build. I never really got into Terror From The Deep but I'd assume that had something similar.

Yes the original XCOM feature attacks on your base, they are way better than the new game btw.

There was Jagged Alliance 2. That wasn't an open sandbox world quite like you're describing, but did involve overworld navigation and having to decide your plans of attack / movement. Enemy forces would often attempt to retake areas you cleared, and if it happened to be populated with a militia you trained, you would have to defend (either with an auto-resolve, or by actually taking part with a PC member).

Obviously not what you are looking for, but just based on the title alone, Dota 2 comes to my mind. Your base could be under attack at random times while you are pushing. :p

Tycoon and survival crossbreed genre games like Dwarf Fortress (Castle Story, Timber & Stone for example) although you won't be traveling around the world on your own.

Well, there is a similiar game to State of Decay where your objective is to defend your base. It's called Fort Zombie. It's pretty bad though.
