I am EXTREMELY mad right now.
I have been trying for DAYS to beat a quest boss in a Dead Island 2 side quest.

Now I know I don't HAVE to do the quest but I am at the end of it so....

So now, I have had a thought. What are some of the WORST bosses in games you have ever fought? These do NOT need to be final bosses. Mini bosses, mid bosses and even side quest bosses. All count.

I really disliked Doom Eternal Ancient Gods Part 2 final boss. The stop and wait design was antithetical to everything the combat was building to during the entire game.

Yep. The single most annoying 'boss mechanic' in any game. The game wasn't exactly great for my taste, but that boss is right at the top of my 'reasons to not play a game' list.

For me everything up until that point was really great, I loved this type of complex combat dance, where you have use every part of your arsenal strategically and can't just shotgun your way through the game. But the boss was so incredibly boring, because the game specifically punished me if I did anything other than wait.

Serious Sam 3 BFE and bosses are also wait and move opposite entire non stop actrion. SS TSEHD Boss was plain pansy doing nothing except summon more enemies.

+1
I dont think you really need really quick movements, and yes i beat him with full health, both in legendary and non legendary version. You just need to have patience to beat him at full health and not rushing to finish him iirc

I really didn't want to get into a tit for tat over who found it easy compared to me. I explained my physical limitations, but somehow that meant two people jumped in to be like "oh I found it easy, and it didn't require quick movements." YES it fkn did. There are 3 Shadow Kuros and you need speed and reflexes to stop them changing the perspective so that you fall down to the bottom. If you do fall, the three of them will jump on you and you die if you can't jump on the platforms quickly enough to get back to the crystal.

That was not a difficult game. But this boss was one of the worst FOR ME due to its gimmick.

Anyways, I deleted my post because I don't like the flexing over something I actually explained, while I acknowled that the game itself isn't difficult.

Easy. The final boss fight in Quantum Break and it's not even close. Horrendous design with unfair one-shot mechanics.
Great game set in an interesting universe, but completely ruined by that fight bc all I remember now is the many hours I was stuck there.

Yeah, that boss fight was trash. I eventually gave up and looked at a help guide so I could finish the game. That's something I really try not to do, but after multiple confusing fails, I'd just had enough. Agree that it's an otherwise great game.

I remember it was hard, fortunately I was playing on casual mode, so I didn’t get too frustrated.
I think half of it was the game would lag a bit, unoptimised at times?

Performance was actually ok iirc. For me it was the boss attack that turns the floor red and one-shots you. You can outrun it, but the area it covers is huge and I often got confused where I could safely run to.
No way I would have beat it w/o watching a video. Even then it was rage inducing on Hard difficulty.

Dark Force from Phantasy Star 2, simply because he has a gimmick to where he can scare a party member which gives them a set few debuffs, one of which being the inability to move. There's nothing you can do to prevent this unlike a boss in the previous game, and he can do it to all 4 party members at any time. All you can do is hope the game decides the Nei Sword dispels the fear, otherwise you can hold that game over. He's the only boss/enemy like this in the whole game btw.
As an honorable mention, the final boss of The Incredible Hulk. Enough said.

The boss at the end of Sonic Generations is pretty frustrating and gimmicky. I love a lot about the rest of the game, but oof, the mechanics for flying and dashing and running boss hits.

"Watch out Sonic!"

I've beaten that boss several times and still don't understand how it works, the Time Eater has to be one of the most confusing boss fights I ever encountered, I just randomly win at some point and have no clue of what I did differently. They were clearly going for something very gimmicky and completely fumbled the execution.

We found some good YouTube videos or some kind of walkthrough that explained how to do it. My son can win reliably now, but it doesn't look fun.

I believe it was Deathstroke in Batman: Arkham Origins for which I needed to watch a video tutorial - and even then it took me 5 more attempts before I could kill him. I didn't even play in hard mode or anything...

But these aren't necessarily bad. they are just really hard. Don't know about the KH one, but both GoW fights were basically endurance fights that required you to level up and use everything at your disposal. They weren't gimmick fights or bosses that required specific never before used mechanics.

There was some boss in Deus Ex: Human Revolution that was impossible to beat if you went full stealth earlier – until they patched it.
Also The Radiance from Hollow Knight was frustrating and The Hollow Knight (boss) was just boring to replay to get to The Radiance.
Also, the infamous Mafia 1 race was a nightmare boss :P
The last boss in Monster Sanctuary was impossible to beat with the monsters I've had and I didn't want to spend hours on grinding – so I've never finished the game.

Everyone will kill me for this, but i will say it.
Ghostrunner 2.
Theres six bosses (Counting Avatar and Rahu.) and THREE are just run around, parry, hit, run around.
Honestly the worst one here is Mitra, the final boss that was build up for SO long with the bit of lore and dropping "This dude is about to kill us all" all the time to a point where it gets annoying.
Why? They basically just copied Ahriman (Boss 1, which the fast paced "blade vs blade" combat was actually VERY good) and slapped on an invisiblity power that the ONLY thing you gotta do is look benhind you and parry him. Not to say the fight is SUPER tedious and long for no reason, absolutely filled with theese scenes that when you hit Mitra, you are teleported to a platforming section and then hit him when you reach the platform he is shooting the lasers from. They do take a while and needs a lot of precision, not to say since this game is a "hardcore slasher", MITRA BARELY HAS CHECKPOINTS AND YOU DIE A LOT, FORCED TO EVEN GO BACK TO THE WHOLE FIGHT! WHY??

Good luck on that quest tho.

Yeah it kinda is, but HEL managed to be a decent fight at minimum, in GR2 they barely tried creativity.
GR1 has less bosses and content, but the quality is WAY higher than 2, you can also fight an elevator where you need to climb it as lasers are shot everywhere, unlike in GR2 you are just playing Ahriman over and over again with tiny changes ;)

Somebody gifted me "River City Girls" on last Christmas here and I can't believe this fashion girl boss called "Hibari" is giving me so much trouble that I have lost some interest for the game. Not even "Serperis" or the lady behind the bone collector in Blasphemous made me feel this frustrated. I just can't find the way and feels my character is underpowered compared to her.

It's a shame because I was having a blast with the game and soundtrack. She really feels like the final boss of the game.
I don't know what the developers were thinking with her. Her stamina is off the charts, she has one of the best regular enemies as her minions if not the best x2 and like you said her needle and magic is OP.
Wish they could re balance that boss with an update but It's not gonna happen.
Kudos to you if you 100% It. Thats impressive.

  • Mr Tomassi from Control I really disliked it, it's an optional boss you have to do to complete a side quest. The worst fight for me in the game, by far.
  • Any boss fight from Wanted: Dead (extremely unfair, all of them, you are 1 person and you fight literal tanks, mechs and super soldiers that can one shot you).

Salabog from Secret of Evermore. Has more HP than the next three bosses and it comes at a time where alchemy is so bad you might as well grind your weapon levels to brute force it. There are times where he disappears from the map and you have to wait and then he quickly appears and blasts you with fire, then summons enemies. You either can grind up the few garbage alchemy you have at that point or abuse a glitch to skip his whole section. That fight lasts longer than the final boss.

Not sure if this also counts, but in data hacker corruption, there is this tower where you must climb around... 100, i think? Levels, where each 10 level has a boss to beat. And you cant save while in this tower and the regular enemies can wipe out your party if you are not lucky. And i havent even reach the last floor in this tower (gave up long ago since i figured i need to grind for 100+h to get maximum stat booster in their previous game to beat it)

The real 'final boss' of Drakengard 3 (...)
This is the hardest boss I've ever encountered. But I love it with a thrill.
Without giving away too many spoilers, this was something that was completely different from the rest of the game and my other diverse gaming experiences.

Iirc there was screen desync in that battle, and needed to press by sound, not visual circles, that's why it was so difficult (Didnt tried myself, just watched the analysis of game story\walkthrough)

Very conditionally speaking, but yes, you have approximately correctly grasped the essence, it is somewhat reminiscent of rhythm games. In practice it feels different, too many factors that change their rules with each new phase of this boss. My group of friends used to turn on this part of the game at parties and take turns (with a prize fund) trying to complete it. It feels very intuitive when watching, everyone loves to watch and beat the rhythm, but still no one has ever completed this boss after the credits at these runs and very different types of our players took part in this. Of course, for someone else it can be completely different. :) But yet, this boss has become an internal meme for me and my circle of friends.
