I am considering throwing out my perfectly capable windows desktop PC, and buying an iMac 4k or 5k.

I'm not happy with windows 10, it has a lot of "features" that annoy the living banana out of me. One of the major reasons I'm considering the change is that neither me nor my bf knows a lot about computers, or how to build it. We don't know whats better than what, and neither one of us is interested in setting ourselves into it.

I've been doing a lot of research, at game selection and such and decided I could live with the selection. With both blizzard and valve being iOS supporters it gives me a wide range of games that I can sink a LOT of hours into. (+ divinity original sin is my fav game and that's also on iOS).

I know that for the money an iMac 4k or 5k costs, I could get a beastlike rig of a PC, but I know nobody who'd help me build one so I'd end up with an expensive custom built by the computer stores anyways.

My question however, comes to those that has experience with mac gaming.
I found a lot of older reddit posts and such, from 2015 and 14, but nothing newer. About how games work on macs, and apparently even tho they're for iOS, they still run like shit. Bugs, and crashes, and most mac'ers recommend duelbooting or w/e it's called.

I'm not interested in that, reboot my pc between iOS and windows multiple times a day? Ew.

So, my question: How bad does the mac games run?
Tomb raider, bioshock infinitive, pillars of eternity, WoW, L4D2, Hearthstone, Dragon age origins, Guild wars 2, Diablo 2, Elder scrolls online
are all titles that support mac. and all titles that I'm interested with.

Anyone willing to share their experiences and/or advice?

Cheers!

I wanted to once, even tried it out. But how exactly does that even work if you have no.. experience with coding or programming or whatever?
I've been told it's almost impossible if you don't learn those things.

Installing ubuntu on my computer on a whim, is probably a lot smarter than buying an imac on a whim.

Another alternative would be Mint which looks a bit more like Windows.

Well, that is just one choice after downloading, of course there are more later but that wouldn't be too different on Ubuntu
About the Windows part, I never said Linux would be easier and I wasn't the one to recommend it in the first place.
Then again I wouldn't recommend a Mac to anyone.

What is that ShareX alternative you mentioned btw?

Check out LinuxMint, also a great system.
Both Ubuntu and Linux Mint can be run off a USB stick with not installing them, so you can test them out first. Just remember it will be a little slower when running from a USB stick, but are fully functional.
Also, almost all the software that comes with Linux is free, just search for 'linux alternative ..." for your programs. There is one program (package manager) to install additional software. No longer hunting down installer files on dev websites and a one click-update-all function.

Minus the fact that all the big "cool" games these days comes on multiple platforms, and any game that iOS or linux as ambidot suggested, will be released on xbox, wiiu, or ps4. I own a ps3, and the only thing that has kept me from buying ps4 is that square enix started publishing their games on PC just "a few months" after the ps4 and I'm not gonna buy a ps4 for only 3-4 games for the next few years.

You can probably find people online (like here or other forums) who can help you build a custom PC, because they like talking about these things. You could then order from NCIX or somewhere else. You just need to know your budget and what you would like to do with it, and see if it can spark some discussion. Or just read already existing discussions on the same topic, I'm sure there are thousands of them on the web. :)

You can try Mac OS, but Apple PC's are not good for gaming. Linux is another option, you can test it out through a Virtual Machine.

I was an imac user many years ago, it was fun but today I'd recommend you stick to PC for gaming.
Get an Intel I5/i7 4k+ processor, at least 8GB Ram, and an NVIDIA graphic card of the GTX 900s models upwards.
It will be half the price and run anything.

Macs are friendly to use and look pretty but windows pc run more games and apps.

There was bootcamp-but seriously get a gaming pc rig.

I have a Macbook Pro, there are limited games to play for Mac, however games that do run, do not run as well as a Window would imo. I admit I didn't think the Steam App ran very well on my mac, constant updating is needed, and sometimes it would crash... As for the games there has been a few bugs in the games I played (but I can't remember what). Out of your list I played Pillars of Eternity and if I remember that ran fine... I'm sure the iMac specs would be better than my Macbook Pro.

What I did was install Windows through the Apple's Bootcamp, and when I felt like playing games I would switch my operating system. If you're a serious gamer I wouldn't recommend a Mac at all. However if you want something for everyday use, like internet browsing, streaming, wordpress, or creative projects like photoshop etc than Mac is like heaven... it's super user friendly.

Also macs are not made for gaming, they're made for work.

If you don't know how to build a PC just do what I did and find a tech forum or go to one of several subreddits about PC building, give them your budget and they'll tell you which parts to buy to get the best out of your money. Also when it comes to Windows you can just use Windows 7. I still do and so do many people.

You can buy pre-built gaming PCs from various sites. I'm out of the loop on all the sites but manufacturers like Alienware for example. If you're a gamer then I wouldn't buy a Mac. PC/Windows is really the only choice. If you don't like Windows 10 then use an older version like Win 7 or 8.1. I'm still using Win 7 and it works beautifully.

Who says you need to build your own PC? They still make them the old-fashioned way, and you can buy one already assembled with decent specs.

You're not really going to have access to as many games with a Mac, unless you decide to run Windows on it. It's simply a fact that both OS X/macOS and GNU/Linux have a lot fewer games available for them than Windows, and with the Mac, you don't have many choices in regards to graphics cards that can handle the big AAA games.

I love the Mac, but please don't get rid of your PC. Gaming is the wrong reason to get a Mac.

Apple products are bad in general just ask any IT guy and they say its a bad idea too buy anything related to Apple.
There are a bunch of reasons why the one i hear the most is the problems with upgrading it.

So whats your issue with windows 10 exactly? I know a lot of people complain about the spyware but i don't get why people care its not like other sites or programs are already doing that for years and why care its just your information its not like they are going to put in a bilboard that u went to a porn site or anything like that... I barely noticed the upgrade too windows 10 from windows 7 so i don't really see the problem myself.

Also Mac is just wrong for gaming in general games don't run that well on them and most games don't even release for it.
Buying a Mac is like buying a console but with more limitations and its 5 times as expensive.

Also don't get it why u want 4k gaming on 4k is barely playable and youtube and other services still have videos in just 1080p

Macdonalds sucks just stick with Windows because u can see through them (Sorry had to do that)

most of actual IT (programmers) prefer Macs for working

Thank you. OS X/macOS is a variant of BSD UNIX, and what many consider to be the best desktop UNIX on the market.

GNU/Linux is preferred for servers, but OS X/macOS is great for the desktop.

That survey is about developers. I see you said IT (programmers), and maybe I shoulda paid more attention to that. From the context I'm used to, IT means the guys that run networks and keep servers up and all that--which is distinct from the developers and programmers. Where I'm from people refer to programmers as programmers or coders, not IT.

The "IT people" I've known have never demonstrated much of an interest in OS X.

Edit: Additionally, your source is awful at supporting your point of "most of actual IT (programmers) prefer Macs for working," as Windows has a majority every year. OS X is the top OS for 2016 but that is solely due to the transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10. But for every single year your source has, Windows > all non-Windows OSes combined. So what were you saying?

Windows will have a majority for quite a long time. We can't say for sure that the one year bump in OS X numbers is significant; the survey is voluntary and the sudden increase for OS X may be due to a small change in respondents. Or it could be what oginer said below. Or it could be actual adoption. We don't know yet.

People who run networks overwhelmingly prefer Linux. They may have to use Windows or OS X, but Linux is their bread and butter. Who is running network or internet servers on OS X?

I can only assume that each year more people answer them, so we should be getting a more accurate result every year.

That's not how statistics works. One needs a sound methodology in order to determine that the results are representative. And maybe the results are representative, but they aren't representative merely because participation has increased.

I would say it's actually easier to manage a server using OS X than it is with Windows. I mean, look at CMD, it sucks, it really sucks, it can't even handle Unicode, give it something outside of ASCII and it just blows up. On top of that you don't really have some needed things like SSH built-in natively, you have to go out of your way to more or less implement them.

Two things:

One, you need up-to-date information. Windows supports bash now.

Two, and more importantly, I did not say that people prefer to manage servers or networks with Windows. I specifically said in my first post my experience with IT guys is that they prefer Linux, not Windows, not OS X.

I don't know what sort of Applefan Kool-aid you've been drinking, but I have never seen any source that supports the idea that OS X is the preferred OS for IT pros, or for people coding for multiple platforms. If you have a resource other than the one that pegs OS X as the OS being used by 25% of coders please show me.

Now you are bashing me for providing a survey that shows that many coders (in general) prefer OS X than Linux when you are just talking about personal experience with a few people.

No, I rebutted your initial use of a survey of a population of programmers in response to Jason069's use of the term "IT guys"--which I understood to mean the people that support and administrate computer networks and servers, as well as setting up, fixing, upgrading, and maintaining individual workstations. And I rebutted the use of "most" when the survey does not support that conclusion. You have since amended "most" to "many", which is accurate.

First of all, I don't use OS X. I don't like their interface, I don't like the way Apple does things. I never had an Apple product and I'll probably never will since in my opinion they are very overpriced. In fact, a friend of mine got an iMac some years ago, and the first thing I recommended him was to ditch OS X and install Windows on it which he did. Right now I'm using Debian as my main OS.

That's fine. But you're fighting to make your point as if you were living in a back room of an Apple store somewhere.

My post was never about actual IT (what you consider IT) pros, more about developers and programmers in general. And seems like many of them prefer OS X before Linux and Windows, that's it. And no, I don't have any other surveys, there probably are, but I have no motivation to look for them since I'm not really trying to prove OS X is the better OS or whatever here, I was just pointing out on my first post that many programmers (and I specified that part) liked that OS, that's it.

I get that your post wasn't about that--but Jason069's post was. And that's what I thought you were addressing before I noticed you were referring to a subset of people that I do not think are usually referred to as "IT guys". And you don't have to support my anecdote or disprove it. I just see you trying to double down about preference amongst programmers as if that is relevant to Jason069's original post.

Now if Jason069 says he--like you--includes programmers and all manner of other people with degrees or professions in the field of Information Technology to be IT guys, well, then I'd disagree but your data would certainly be useful in rebutting his original statement. But I don't think he'd say that.

No one is denying what the Stack Overflow survey says. I last criticized a couple of statements you made about it, like that more participation means better data. But that has nothing to do with my (unsupported) assertion that Linux is preferred by "IT guys".

That someone uses something, specially when it's for a job, doesn't mean he actually prefers it. There are many OSX developers because it's required to build iOS apps, not because they actually like it. I don't develop in OSX myself, but the people I know that do only tell my nightmares about XCode (the development environment that's used in OSX).

Do not get an iMac to game. That is a horrible gaming option. It is a waste of money.

"I don't understand hardware." "I've never built a system."

No one has, until they do it. If you want a gaming PC then buy a gaming PC (not an iMac), or build a gaming PC. Do not buy a shiny all-in-one piece of crap that is a piece of crap precisely because of how ill-suited it is to your intended use. A Porsche 911 is a piece of crap if you are a parent of four children who intends to carpool.

If you're really "aaahhhhh, Windows!" about it, then learn to use Linux. It's not that difficult, and there are probably a lot of things you can learn to get working in Wine. Another alternative would be to dual-boot Windows and Linux, and just boot into Windows to play games, but use it for literally nothing else otherwise.

Do not get an iMac for gaming. A Mac Pro or Macbook Pro are far better options if for some reason you have a big lovefest for Apple products.

But if you consider yourself a gamer, just step your gaming up and conquer your fears to do PC gaming right. Do you intend to not be playing PC games five, ten, fifteen years from now?

Last time: do not get an iMac.

First of all iOS is for mobile, which I'll get to in a moment. I own a base model iMac and personally I love it. Sure it's not the best choice for gaming, but I own over 70 games for Mac and they all run perfectly, also I bootcamp for games not available on MacOS, and the only game I couldn't run that I tested was Batman Arkham Knight, not suprising. Every other game I can run, just not at the highest settings, which is to be expected, considering I'm using a base model. Since your getting a 4k or 5k model, I'm sure you won't encounter my same problem and can run any game currently out in the market, including Batman Arkham Knight. But the point of a Mac is not for gaming alone, I also own an AppleTV and iPod Touch/iPhone, all which connect with each other, they're all simple to use, and you can expect quality service, stress free which is what I like most about Apple. You'll find a lot to like about Apple and Macs outside of gaming, but if gaming is your only concern then I would recommend a PC over a Mac anyday.
