Long story short, the new restrictions imposed by Valve has made trading pretty damn dangerous right now. There is a good chance that we will never get a good Steam deal again so I am planning on changing my Steam wallet funds and keys into real money. Might end up buying from Amazon or GMG since they have these discounts that Steam will never have in your own region.

I'm thinking of buying keys with Steam wallet and selling them for Paypal/Bitcoin. Yeah I will lose quite a bit but so be it. I might keep a couple of dollars on Steam but that's what I'm planning to do right now.

Should you do the same? Well it's up to you really.

If you use the "gift mode" for paypal, then the buyer can't retract the sent money - in theory.

he can - just not with one button click. All he has to do is to log in using proxy/VPN, pay you via gift then write to PP support that it was transaction made by hijacked account.

Buy from key resellers, problem solved. These are usually 2nd on the list to buy from, for cheapest price.

When i want a game i check GMG (sometimes they have decent prices, even better than key resellers on certain items), 2-3 key resellers and their feedback/status and compare prices. Buying from russian traders turned out to be a problem for me as of late, witcher 3 + dying light got region locked after activation, none of the gifts had a region restriction, waste of money/keys.

PS: Steam basically lost my trust on this, and i'll rarelly be buying anything directly from steam anymore. Unless the price is properly discounted or if the game is actually worth it, which is kinda hard to know given that most games nowadays seem like crap and rigged with dlc to boot.

The trust thing is really hard. But i think you should befriend a few trusted sellers, that will make it easier. Trading is a pain though.

Why wouldn't be getting good sales? I don't see the correlation.

Why is trading dangerous now?

Valve put a 30-days trade lock on newly purchased gifts. The only way to trade gifts is now to send them as gifts and the payment (e.g. keys) will be sent in a separate instance.

This shouldn't be a problem if you trade with trusted sellers.

Aye. I'm still trading, but selecting my sellers very carefully. Although honestly, people should've been doing that anyways.

We should, but we should still have a safety net. But Valve see that people get scammed, and rather than doing something about the scammers, they do this to wash their hands of the problem.

Just curious, but what Valve could do to prevent scammers ? people are scammed because they are not carefull, it's not Valve only fault. I agree that scammer could get their account banned as soon as it's proved they did scam, but i guess it's maybe not as easy as it sounds to found out the truth. Dunno really.

Well for start, they could really implement a 2 factor authentication by now, I use Google Authenticator, and it's really annoying Steam doesn't have it already.

Many scammers use dummy accounts (lvl 0). I don't care if Steam makes it mandatory to use 2 factor auth to even have a steam account. I know this would upset many people, so I would be also happy if you wanted to trade with someone who has 2 factor auth, then YOU NEED to have it enabled as well.

Bonus side effect: VAC bans are for life, you need a new sim card to make a new Steam account. Fewer cheaters in CS.

Perhaps do something about blocking the IPs and PayPal / bank accounts for accounts that keep getting in trouble. Yes, there are ways around everything, but the harder it is, the more work they have to do.

Sale/discount will be long over after 30 days. And noone will invest his own monies into 30 day waiting for small profit that he can even never see (let's say 2 weeks after he bought several copies of requested game for bunch of ppl this game comes in Humble Bundle tier 1$. All these people who requested game from him, who he bought game for just go and buy bundle and he's left with bunch of useless gifts now worth much less than he paid for them).

I've been trading a bit less but still do with a few reliable sellers I trust. I just don't trade with random people for any valuable gift outside of the trading window. And I've started buying as much as possible from GamersGate/GMG/Amazon as a mean of protest. If the game is gonna cost me the same either way, I'll now buy it outside of of the Steam storefront.

Trading is still fine. It's just now people should be doing what they didn't do before - avoiding randoms that you don't really trust. Also, you can't just jump to Amazon. You see, they sell NA locked codes like Inversion and Metal Gear Rising. You'd still have to trade for ROW copies no Steam for those titles.

Trading isn't dangerous for those who know what they're doing and there are still going to be plenty of good deals. The biggest danger is Valve themselves. Scammers are predictable and easy to avoid/remove. You never know what Valve is going to do though.

Hahaha, not quite like that but yeah. They've reversed trades and gave people different gifts than they started with. Gabe leaves it to the random support team to decide what to do. It's just a really weird system in place and they hire the strangest people to resolve millions of support cases. The system needs a major overhaul.

Eh. I purchase from Amazon A LOT for trades, especially during the sales.

Yes, there are some games on there that are locked keys. But these are anamolies. The large majority of Amazon purchased games are ROW. And 9/10 times you can find out if a key is locked by doing a simple Google search or looking at the Amazon comments. Its an easily mitigated problem. Locked keys on Amazon are a very small % of the games they sell. On the flipside you have things like Wolfenstein, which a German can get and activate fine and it will be uncensored, unlike the version in their store.

I think you're jumping the gun and thinking entirely too rashly.

What is this "good chance that we will never see a good Steam deal again"?? You're basing this on the new trading rules? Just this week, Dead or Alive Last Round was made available for pre-order. It was trading for 6.5 keys (and still is) region free. The Disney Mega Pack which is on sale for $54.99 was trading for 10 keys. I'll give you that a lot of new games are going to be less likely to be tradable if they are cross region trade/gift locked, but there's still thousands of games on the platform that will be able to be gotten at cut rates from traders that will never be locked. The biggest problem is going to be for sites like Dispenser.tf as a lot of its sellers wont be able to restock immediately anymore. Steam is still going to have their bonkers sales every year and the large majority of games will not be locked.

Until Valve decides to retrolock games, I'm not fearful. That will be my tipping point. You only have to be more careful right now.

I've traded (looks at history) 17 times since the new rules have been in place and have not had one hiccup from it.

  • Its dangerous if you're trading with noobs that demand you go first now, but you have a +52 on ST. That is not a lot, but its more than average. You can easily find people to go first.
  • Stick with proven traders that have a solid track record - older Steam account, high rep (> 200). In the 17 trades I've made with the new rules, about 1/3rd were with the same person (a Russian) that I have dealt with for over a year now.

There's many ways to mitigate any "supposed" danger right now. And IMO (I can purchase from Amazon and GMG) Steam still has the better deals if the game is not locked. Occasionally Steam is bested but its not cut and dry.
