For the love of god no... Get a Sager or asus or lenovo or anything but alienware! So over priced. Sager is the best bang for your buck and fully customizable.

if you want a laptop for gaming you have to look out for somethings:
1- if it has the specs you need for the games you want. (obvious) ;
2- how it handles without the battery (you want a computer that can use lower power if needed);
3- how it handles in max performance ( if it overheats easilly);
4- be on the lookout for integrated graphics (that are rubbish for gamming and quitte common on laptops).
Look for this and other things on user forums and never on the websites and reviews, because their last objective is selling, users are usually unbiased.
My personal advice if possible is having a gaming high-end desktop for the games and a all-rounder laptop for work.

That's the thing, when I travel back to college I have to spend like 5 hours on the bus and I like to game at friends houses etc, so a rig isn't really a viable option for me right now =/

If you have a game that you play usually with your friends then get a pc that can play that game perfectly and it's a computer that is not going to let you down on that game and the ones on the same time period. But don't spend to much on a computer that you aren´t going to play massively, expecially a laptop.

I've been looking at the Y500 with a 750m and maybe investing in the ultrabay for a second one when it comes out, I guess I'll go with that one

There is no such thing as "Gaming Laptop".If you are going to play hardcore games, get a desktop.Laptops always cause problems and make you suffer !

it's not a question of being a pc elitist, all I want is to play new games in a more portable format

So due to being in college and having to be quite flexible as to the location in which I do my gaming I want to upgrade to a new laptop which I want to run new games at a reasonable FPS rate on mid/high settings and possibly last me a while. I am currently looking at this one: Lenovo G780 ! If you have any other suggestions in the same price-range with better specs/more suitable for what I want please help me out in the comments, ty in advance =]
