Following in 2K and WB footsteps, Codemasters have confirmed they are working on moving Dirt 3 from Games for Windows Live to Steamworks DRM.

Source

I don't have the game but I still think this is great, and I hope even more companies will go with this (cough Bethesda cough).

What GfWL games would you like to see ported to Steamworks?

Edit: Capcom also confirmed they are working on dealing with GFWL.

Fallout can be modded out, and needs to be for some mods to function.
Fuel/dirt 2 please patch!
Section 8... I'd love for these to be patched just so I can continue to play them, the multiplayer is already dead.
Warhammer 40k DoW2 are already "fixed" by playing retribution, as the mutliplayers are upgraded/"expansioned" with it, and the campaigns are the same.

The rest... I have no discussion as I don't play them. :)

Serious question here though; for the games that don't have any news about their company removing GFWL (like GTA IV and Dark Souls) would it be 'legal' for them to not adress this issue and just let their game die with GFWL.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, it's on the steam store page for GTA4 that with 30 days notice you might not be able to access it anymore. Darksouls as well I believe... However Dark Souls has been already confirmed (in deleted tweets) to be transferring to steamworks. My guess is it'll be announced "officially" sometime shortly before DarkSouls 2 launches.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't believe that's actually 'legal' though.
Just because some 3rd party software shuts down (which didn't need to be included in the first place) shouldn't mean that everyone who payed money for it can't play that game anymore.

Also there is nothing mentioned on the Steam Store page for GTA IV about GFWL and it shutting down soon so i don't know where you got that from.

edit: nvm found it already.

"Access to special features may require internet connection, may not be available to all users, and may, upon 30 days notice, be terminated, modified, or offered under different terms."

They are talking about special features here though (onine play etc), not just regular single player,

welcome to the world of not owning games, when a company feel like tasking the servers down its gone forever in some cases

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe i should look into GFWL a bit before i continue talking though because i'm not even sure how that whole thing works.
But i'm mostly talking about the single player aspect of those games. I'm assuming you need to have GFWL active all the time for both games i mentioned, or atleast need to sign in once to their servers before you start playing.
I could be wrong though because i never actually played a game with GFWL before, ever. So correct me if i am.
You can't sell a piece of software which would later just stop working because, like i said, some 3rd party software you use for you game is no longer active. Atleast not imo.
They always include a part on that in their TOS'es for online stuff etc. but it should never affect core funcionality.
We aren't renting the license, we 'bought' it and i'm pretty sure they can't just ignore that it won't work anymore in the near future.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not sure about the legal stuff, but I know it's possible to remove GFWL from GTA IV with XLiveLess, right now it's necessary in order to use more complex mods. However, the online functions are missing, and unless Rockstar does something, multiplayer will die.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Singleplayer will still work. Anything that will load on a "local" profile will work fine. It simply means no multiplayer, no video sharing, and no live friends/achievements. The base game will still work just fine, the same as it does if you unplug your internet and try to play.

This is such a heavy slap to PC gamers, I can't wait for an alternative to Windows PC gaming, I mean another Operating System that would become the standard. Maybe Linux..

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, LIVE should just dissapear, but I hate that they will leave some games without multiplayer, that's really why I care.

Considering most of the PC gaming population, if not all, hated GFWL, not really. Hell we rejoice it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is not about an OS this is about a program, DRM that is connected to a game.

How is the closing of a much disliked, I might even say hated (I know I hated it) DRM system which made things very difficult for some people to play games and even caused people to loose all their save games for all their GFWL (this happened to me a number of times).

What pissed me off was that it was DRM instead of DRM. I put up with steam even with its short comings. Its DRM and I generally hate DRM. Then you go and require a login, inside of the game to a whole other network to even play the game or have save files. There are a number of games like this that require signing into a whole different network and if thats network is down or has issues you can't play the game, even if all you are doing is playing single player.

Then toss on the fact that the only way you could buy the DLC for Dirt 2, and Dirt 3 and other GFWL games that were on steam was to go out and buy over priced "points". Put those points into GFWL and get the over priced DLC which as far as I know almost never went on sale and then try to convince GFWL that you have the game to get the DLC to show up while playing. A few other games had issues with DLC sometimes not being accepted by GFWL, the first few times I would try to put in for it. And of course if you are only 10 or so points short of being able to get the DLC, you have to go out and pay 10 to 20 bucks for a whole bunch more points that you might not ever use.

So if getting rid of that crap is a heavy slap to PC gamers, then slap me silly cause I'm all for getting rid of it.

I think it's also a good thing that it's going away, but at the same time it's taking the multiplayer functionality of some games and that's what is bad. It's clear that they don't care about gamers and didn't care throughout the years, which is why they never changed the LIVE client in any good way, to suit the needs of PC gamers.

LIVE should just disappear, but I hate that they will leave some games without multiplayer.

Reading your comments I came to conclusion that games that may not get ported to Steamworks (or modified in some other way to remove GfWL) will not be playable. Is this true? I can't find any relevant info so don't take my word on it, but I think I read somewhere that they should work fine (not sure about online play and achievements).

Also note that there are games like Fallout 3 that are not entirely dependent on it and work fine even when it's disabled (in case of FO3 that must be done in order to mod it).

If the game requires signing into the network to be able to play and even save the game, and the network is totally shutdown, then you are correct. Unless a game has GFWL patched out of it, you will not be able to play that game.

Because right now i have bought GTA IV a while ago, never installed/played it. But once GFWL gets euthanized we aren't able to play the game anymore.
We still payed money for it, isn't there some sort of responsibility for the devs to get that GFWL shit out of there so people can still play the game?

Officially Valve/Steam employees have already said that if for what ever reason steam would shut down, they would patch things up so that people would not need to connect to steam anymore to play their games.

Now that doesn't mean everything would be fine cause there are many games that rely on steam stuff in general to connect up and play with other people.

BUT Steam/Valve has been making so much money by selling other peoples games that the only way they would loose money is if another platform would come along that treated their paying customers better and generally there isn't a whole lot that other companies could do to make things better to steal away Valve/Steam customers.

Actual working offline mode. Its been mentioned that with steam box coming, they will be giving us an actual offline mode that doesn't require to be online first and can be offline for more then 2 or so weeks. But of course only time will tell.

Better deals. With sometimes up to 85% to 90% off sometimes, its hard to see place doing better sales.

Better Events. Would love to see another event like the one they had a couple of xmas' ago just done better with less of a chance of farmers getting all the good stuff. I doubt we will ever see that any time soon from any site.

Better support service. Well this is one area Valve/Steam really needs to focus on. Any time I have required help from other sites, I have had a response within hours, not weeks. Specially when dealing with a problem with paying for a current sale that will be gone by the time they reply.
