Most overrated anime in terms of rating by users, not popularity.

Gintama (Seen over 140 eps, not funny most of the time or I've got a poor sense of humour)

Evangelion (It's an angel! It's an angel !It's an angel! It's an angel! It's an angel! What the hell is going on?)

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (KILL ALL THOSE BITCHES! Most annoying show ever)

One Piece (I like this anime but the pacing Is wayyyyyyyyyyy too slow, better than fillers though)

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Must not sleep)

Fairy Tail (Giant boobs, ripped off characters, what could be more appealing for pre-teens?)

I like the feature movie in 1995 of ghost in the cell, the anime is actually quite boring comparing to it.

I want to add Gantz (anime), maybe it's just me having really high expectations for it but it ended up being a huge mess of poor monologues and bad action sequences.

Yeah the movie of Gits was pretty good. Also I've watched like 8 eps of Gantz, dropped it because I though we might get a remake some day.

I heard the live action movies of gantz are not that bad, quite entertaining they are. The reason why I hate the anime sooo much is that the monologues make no sense and head nowhere which is a problem I also am having with Attack on Titan (it's not as bad as gantz but for god's sake just fucking stop staring at the ground and do sth!)

Same. So many things went wrong with the second season. I mean, the antagonist was just plain stupid, the weird step-sister parts were cringeworthy, and, well... I just hated the second season. A pity, since the first was so entertaining. It was a show that was enjoyable because it didn't take itself seriously. It was just fun. Suddenly...

SAO? According to my IRL Japanese friend, it isn't very popular, it's considered a rip-off because it came after the .hack// series. IMO, SAO is better than .hack.
But I have to agree, the fairies and shit? I prefer swords.

SAO may be better tyhan .hack// only because is "shorter" and so it's easier to follow than all the games, manga anime, novel etc. that create the whole .hack// franchise, but i think that .hack// is way better.
But still, the first season is too similar to .hack//, it's undeniable.

You should take into account the intended demography of a show... Most of these anime are for kids so unless you are one.. I don't get death note though. I found it to be pretty solid.

Well most anime is targetted either kids, young teenagers or more rarely older teenagers. There is even fewer targetted for young adults or other demographies.

Anyway I viewed some of those when I was much younger, almost target demography for it and even then most of them I've found bad and overhyped. It is also hard to find anime that for older audiences that is overhyped because there is less of them and usually they don't get as much hype or advertising anyway.

I guess it also depends on what you call overhyped? I don't live in Japan so I'm not really subject to commercials. Kids tend to love this so called 'overhyped' stuff however. When I was a kid I was addicted to dragonball f.e. When I see an episode now however.. no way! But then again as a kid it certainly Lived up to the hype for me! (I do consider having an anime features on a EU tv channel as hype) .

Shingeki no Kyojin: OMG THE TITANS EAT THE HUMANS AND I CAN SEE A LOT OF BLOOD. Also, the drawing (in the manga) is awful and the author doesn't know how to unveal certain parts of the story at the right moment (right, Berthold & Reiner?)

-Evangelion anime series is boring as hell and just as annoying, I don't and will never understand why it is considered so good. Films were great, though.

-Infinite Stratos. Nowadays no one remember it but back when it was released, there was some kind of hype. In fact, it was released in a low season with almost no good animes, and it was considered one of the best for this reason.

-Fate/Stay Night, the anime adaptation is decent but pretty boring, playing the Visual Novel is much more fun. Fate/Zero anime is much better.

-Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni for the exact same reasons. Go play the VN :p

-Bleach/Naruto: I really used to like it, and still think they were good, but it lasted way too long and just doesn't mean anything anymore, be it the anime or manga.

-Highschool of the dead. While I agree it's pretty good and fun, you won't be able to enjoy it if you take it seriously, and that's why I couldn't come to like it. Therefore I tend to think it's "overrated" but it's kind of a biased opinion.

-More generally speaking, any anime with the usual Harem scheme which doesn't get out of the ordinary. I mean, those where you just get that Tsundere girl, the imouto or onee-chan (if not both) girl, the childhood friend, the "I don't give a fuck about what the others think, I can do anything anywhere and I'm kind of perverted" girl, and etc... with no real plot, or just a pretext to sexy scenes, with a main character almost always useless and hopeless yet we don't know how he can get all the hottest chick of his highschool ('cuz yeah, it always takes place in highschool god know why). There are thousands of those, they're usually well-liked thanks to the H, but it almost always sucks.

MC is surrounded by friends and girls, he's a "chosen one", most people around him are joyful yet he's depressed all the time, he's a whining sissy. It's a nice type of character at the beginning, but not when you have to endure him for 26 episodes of 25 minutes lenght. I had enough far before the end, it's really not enjoyable in ANIME. Because you've just made a mistake, my dear. The title quote "anime", not manga. I said Evangelion anime is boring, you answer saying Sore Wa Totsuzen, Unmei no Aite ga (which is a manga) is worst. While I agree that Sore Wa Totsuzen is far from the best manga I know, I didn't get bored midway. I love Evangelion as a manga (or the films, which are more interesting and fast-paced), but the anime is really not enjoyable and has one of the worst ending that has ever been made.

Comment has been collapsed.

ok, few things to clarify:

 1. It's not a silly comedy-ecchi anime. so the depression of main character is sorta in place here. Shinji is not a character you're supposed to like and enjoy (we have Asuka for this <3). As it's a "psycholigical/drama" the main character should have psychological problems. (And yeah, I hate Shinji as well, as 99% of NGE fans. It doesn't change the fact that we love anime. You don't have to like main character to like an anime/movie/book/game/whatever).

 2. You love Evangelion as a Manga? Interesting - especially as in NGE case it's the manga that is based on anime, not anime based on manga. And Shinji is same looser and crybaby in manga as he is in Anime.

 3. TV Series Ending is not an official ending. Producers refused to air the official ending and censored it shitless, hideaki Anno was fprced to change ending, that's why he created The End of Evangelion (which is btw for me the best anime movie I've ever watch) later on. So you should consider End of Eva as actuall ending in place of last episodes.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

1 - Asuka is not a character I like, but I'll pass on that. Again, it's not about liking him or not, as I said, I find the type of character interesting. But he just ruins it. For an anime of this duration (26 episodes of 25 minutes), I don't mind for the first half, but then, even in the second half there's still so many scenes where's he's just that annoying depressed emo that is not interessting AT ALL to watch. It is boring, sorry if it hurts your "pride" as a fan

2 - I know that. And that's especially the reason I like it better. You'll find the same depressing plot (which is the best point of Evangelion in my opinion) but the overall thing is faster, with less of those scenes that just annoy me, or that I can at least skip without worry to miss anything important.

3 - I know that too. And I did say I loved the films (be it The End or Rebuild of Evangelion) :p But it's not the original series. Therefore I can say without worries that Evangelion ending sucks :p

adressed most of this in a comment below, so i won't repeat myself ;p

I'll just add that what you're writing in paragraph 1 I can understand but not agree with :> I guess it depends on what each person likes. For me personally the slow-paced scenes you're referring to (later on not only with shinji, as more and more characters have emotional breakdown) are actually supporting the depressing plot and atmosphere you said you like later on. They build big emotions which would be wasted if the anime would be packed with action only without such a scenes. but I can understand that someone may be bored because "heck, they are not fighting, not talking, not screwing around, so why should I bother" ;p

ok so just to make you feel good :

 1. this anime being aired at 18h in 95 made it one of the most accessible ecchi of the time (misato and I don't remember his name scene where you don't see anything but the voice acting tells it all) (and yeah I love shinji being a coward when everywhere in the world the main character is a hero ready to throw is life to save an insect))

2 Well the manga is based on anime but if you'd have watched some of hideaki anno as a movie director works you would know that his main characters are losers, or out of normal society, don't really know how to express this in english at the moment.

3 TV series is official ending, even though they totally threw out all of the 24 episodes before and the end of evangelion was made up with "ideas about the end" and I must say it once again "ideas" because gainax received mail asking for a true end and some "I'll kill you" letter. And that's also why they're doing new movies now (and for the money)

I'll add the 4. I love how they made anime to be able to tell its stories slowly, but hated all those anime that tried to copy it, rahxephon being the more overrated of those although I see what's good in it, and I'd love it if it was 13 episodes long. But then again we come down to the theory about how eva revolutionized anime for the best or worst, and madoka (being cited in one of the upper response is one example)

I'll also add that most of japanese movies or tv series are slow-paced (although I've seen plenty of american TV series being interesting 2eps after beginning and 3eps before the end of a season, but we can argue that's not the same TV standards.)

1) About shinji that's my paoint, maybe wrong wording from me. I feel that he fits perfectly to the role, I simply hate him as a character/person, because nobody likes Emos ;p

2) I know that. And I enjoy Shinji in manga as well as in anime. I was just stating the fact that's it's kinda silly saying ones dislikes anime because shinji is a depressed crybaby all the time and saying in next sentence that "I love manga thou". Shinji is as depressed and problematic in manga as he is in amime (sometimes even more - whole scene where he maniacally kills gendou in his mind while being absorbed by Unit 01). If it "ruins" the anime why isn't it "ruining" a manga? :>

3) I won't argue, I will have first to invest the time to find the source I'm reffering to, but it was something along the lines of what you're saying, that they had "ideas for the ending" but for various reasons, including but not limited to things like time, budget, controversy and other things they went with TV ending. But once again - it was from interview I've read years ago, won't search for it now, so let's leave this here. I personally will always take End of Eva as an actual ending, but that's only because it feels more complete to me this way. I can understand that someone sitting to the anime for the first time and watching only TV series can be very dissapointed with it (hell, I was sooo dissapointed myself ;P), but watching End of Eva fix this for me :>

Not saying the fillers are bad either, but there are just many of them. As for the manga, I fully agree. It's really good.

In my opinion, an overrated anime would be Dragonball. Especially DBZ. I mean, it's cool, I get it, but the battles lasted so long...

"Oh, no, Frieza, you won't destroy the planet"

"Oh, but it's too late! In only five minutes, FIVE minutes, this whole planet will blow up!"

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!"

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

"FIVE MINUTES, AND THE PLANET WILL BE GONE. FOREVER. AFTER JUST FIVE MINUTES. FIVE."

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

And so on for around 10 episodes, for it to end with Goku discovering that he can turn into Super Saiyan Phase Over 9000 and kill the latest bad guy with only one hit.

Im not saying EVA wasnt overrated but you cant say its overrated JUST because the main character cried 50% of the show.

I'd gladly give it 6/10, I had fun with it ;)

but on the other hand I hate giving "scores" to anything - games/books/movies/animes etc... Cause imho score is never fair.

Something may be exceptional, very very good etc etc, but may have some minor flaws. They don't change the fact it's great but they may be very annoying. So you drop score from 9/10 to let's say 7/10.

On the other hand something is just good, well made etc, but not exceptional in any way imaginable. It's just good, so it also gets score 7/10.

I still would prefer the first one, be it book, game or anime ;p

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu - is not that awesome, and repeating 8 times the same Ep it's a joke.... also she is annoying as hell.
Ergo proxy - not even sure why people like this one.

Sword Art Online - seriously, I don't see why people like it that much
Shingeki no Kyojin - good, but not best. Some people don't see the flaws though
One Piece - Bad animation, bad pacing, fillers. Still, people love it.
Bleach - It was good up to the end of the soul Society Arc, it's bad afterwards
Fairy Tail - the only good thing about it is music
K-ON! - Boring for the most of time, I started watching it because I wanted to see the band, not eating a cake and drinking tea. Yui is total retard
Naruto - all that fillers
Clannad - like SnK. Good, but not as good as people say it is.
Nyoro-n Churuya-san - I almost slept through it. It was so booooooring I yawn when I think about it. I'm being serious there.
Working! - I liked some jokes and characters, but overally it wasn't as good as I expected it to be.
Oda Nobuna no Yabou - it was kinda fun, but not as good as people say it is. It has nice art though.
Puella Magi Madoka★Magica- Good, but not masterpiece that most people say it is. I was shock-driven, story was a little plain.

I felt exactly the same about Bleach. It seemed to be the same stuff over and over after that point.
Naruto lost me with the fillers as well.
Still watching Clannad, so opinion is still being formed.
I watched One Piece occasionally, but never got much into it.
Haven't seen any of the others.

while I agree on most things, still:

One Piece - classical animation and artstyle is a big a big part of what One Piece is. It's like you'd complain that DBZ is overrated because of bad animation (I'm not talking about boring fillers, half of episode of same scene etc - cause these are great DBZ flaws, but just animation). But yeah - I think the big popularity of One Piece comes form the fact that manga (which is far superior to anime) is ultra popular :>

Bleach - to be honest I found it overrated from the begginig. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It's fun to watch (if you cut the fillers out) but that's about it.

Fairy Tail - not only music! FANSERVICE!! xD but yeah - very overrated title.

for others I either don't have anything to add or just didn't watch them ;p

One Piece was good at the beginning. It was getting a little worse later, but still was pretty good until they started to make it in HD. Now it has low budget and it's full of horrible quality animation all the time. Even opening is not animated very well. Plus the pacing is bad. Plus those random out of place fillers in Enies Lobby in the middle of action. You don't do that. It's a bad thing. Just don't.

About Bleach, I loved the style it had at the beginning, both anime and manga. After the Soul Society Arc it started to feel too Spanish for me. Not really my cup of tea.

Clannad was a bit overrated, but Clannad Afterstory is a masterpiece.

They promised me tears. Everyone said I will cry watching it. And nothing. My heart is too hard to break. I was disappointed. But well, it was predictable sometimes, maybe that's why it didn't make me shed a tear.
