The Beginner's Guide looks great and I've added it to my wishlist but I haven't tried it yet. I'll eventually buy it, that's why I haven't watched the youtube videos yet, I don't want to be spoiled lol

Yeah I have jacksepticeye's play through in my watch later but I haven't watched it for more than 3 seconds because I don't want to be spoiled at all xD Supposedly he cried :P

if you want the best experience, don't watch anything. no let's plays, no trailer, no nothing.

the game is definitely worth the money. game time is roughly 1.5 hours, but you will think about it for days. at least that's what happened to me. ^^

I'm trying my best! The longer I wait the more I'm tempted to watch something!

Ugh! Its just an expensive hour and a half for something I don't know for sure if its good! But I want to use the 20% off :(

DONT! WATCH!
Stop spoiling it for yourself.

I don't get this actually... I'd never watch playthroughs of games I'm interested in. I want to be in the moment, not be a studio audience.

I'll only watch play throughs of games I can't afford or I see if its worth spending money on by seeing the first few minutes of game play :P

then better skip it for now an buy it in a year really cheap, if you think it's too expensive (it costs less than a 90-minutes-bluray, but whatever ^^). but just stop reading things about it. believe me, you will have significantly less fun, if you read all the spoilers. and an article about this game without spoilering important parts of the game is basically impossible. :)

I kind of want to get it now, I don't want to wait really... But yeah to me its expensive, I don't even own blurays xD But yeah I'm not reading anything really but spoiler free reviews xD

A movie costs way more to make than a game like "The Beginner's Guide" so that' "it costs less than a 90 minute bluray" sentence doesn't make much sense imo.
I'll wait until it's cheaper though because I still have games I want to finish before playing "The Beginner's Guide"

it's not about production costs. SadisticChicken wants to know whether this short game is worth the money. i just said other experiences, like movies with the same length, cost more.

if you turn that around: many indie games cost as much as a bluray. but the production costs were maybe 1/100. would you say they should all cost only a few cents then? ;)

I'd recommend reading this article from Rock, Paper, Shotgun about the game. Also read through negative reviews for it on steam.

I haven't played Stanley's Parable and I'm generally not interested in those types of games. However it seems like TBG is overpriced crap and a "game" Davey made because he couldn't think of anything better.

From what I can understand he basically designed several quick levels and then put over some narrative over them where he talks about the levels. And in the game he claims the levels are made by his friend while they're actually all made by himself just for this "game".

Thanks, I will read this! I tend to look out for negative reviews first, I just wanted to know what you guys thought first!
I've played it, normally I didn't think I would enjoy it but I was pleasantly surprised :D But it does seem like a lot for an hour and a half game play :(

  1. in my opinion, the game is a narrative masterpiece. few games got me so emotional lately.

  2. why do you suggest to only read negative reviews? most of them (86%) are positive.

  3. why do you spoil here? at least hide your spoilers, please. you will significantly lessen the experience for everyone who reads yur post. (you don't spoil a real "fact", but what could be; but the possibility of what could be is not obvious at the beginning of the game; you should not take that away from new players).

I'm so glad he added the spoiler after I read that... Man I hope he deletes it or at least puts it behind an actual spoiler... ;__;

  1. No comment.
  2. I would assume most positive reviews come from his fans. Their opinion is biased. I'm sure if the game was made by unknown developer the game would mostly have negative reviews.
  3. I didn't really consider that to be a spoiler, but as something that everyone should know before they decide whether or not to buy the game.

Now that I think about it, it's kinda sad when you can spoil the entire game in just two sentences.

Permalink

  1. you didn't even play it. so you really don't have any idea about the narrative quality the game delivers. i played it, and i tell you it would still have lots of positive reviews, if it was not by the Stanley guy. and it's really a pretty bold assumption to say all (or most) positive reviews are based only on the fact that this guy made the game. this just doesn't happen. if a game is garbage, people will say so. the percentage of people who would give a positive review, even if the game was bad, would surely be much, much lower than 86%.

  2. i read a nice review about the game. the first thing they stated was "better don't read this". after that they explained exactly what i was thinking myself after playing it: you will get the best experience, if you don't know anything about the game. you will regret every bit you read about it. and what you spoiled, was pretty significant. thanks for hiding it, by the way.

  3. why all this negativity? ^^ of course you didn't spoil the whole game in two sentences. it has much more to offer.

also, for someone who didn't play the game, you seem to be pretty sure about how bad it is. ;) sorry, but i get the feeling you don't really understand what makes this great experience people are talking about. to be fair - how could you without playing it? i played the game for 90 minutes, then sat in front of my pc for 90 more minutes and thought about the game, read possible explanations for certain things in the forum and so on. there are not many games out there that keep me thinking for so long (the next few days, in fact) after i finished them. to me, this is definitely a sign of quality, of narrative excellence you don't see very often. yes, this game is not for everyone. i enjoyed it a lot, but i can understand if others just don't like it. but the majority of players says it's good, it's a worthy experience. and that should maybe tell you that it's not just a game that relies on the name of its creator; that it undeniably has some qualities. even if it's nothing for you personally.

  1. Yeah I think I might be unfair toward the game. I might watch a full play-through video on youtube and see will my opinion change.

  2. I personally hate when people spoil things. I should have put it under spoiler in the first place, I just didn't think it's a big deal not to for this game.

  3. Well after I read the article on RPS and reviews on steam, it seems to me like this game was done as a quick and effortless cash grab. Make some random levels, talk about them, release it as a game and make easy money. I feel like you can get the same experience just watching free youtube videos where some developers talk about game design, so I don't see why would anyone pay the amount of money TBG asks for what appears to be hour and half long narrative over level design.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  1. do what you want, but let me tell you that playing it is a completely different thing than watching it. :)

  2. again, thanks that you did it in the end.

  3. the levels are not, what is special about the game. also, it's really not about game design. not at all. what it really is, is an insight in someone's psyche. and a very interesting one (again: probably not for everyone, some people might find it boring ^^). and it also has kind of a finale, with a twist. i never had the feeling it was a cheap cash grab. actually, your post was the first time i heard someone say this. for me it's an experience i will not forget in a long time. for others it might look like a cheap cash grab and be boring. for me (and many others) it is a masterpiece.

I'd say, that if you can get easily immersed in video games, then definetly get the game. I had an amazing experience. But if you don't get into stuff like that, then just watch it through YT.

I found The Stanley Parable funny at first, but ultimately it felt like a lackluster experience. Definitely made me feel weird on more than one occasion, so I'm not terribly interested in buying something else from the same creator. Certainly not for £6!

It was a clever game, so it's nice. The Talos Principle is more clever though, but not funny per se. It is however interesting from a existentialism point of view. You should play all of it.

I watched my favorite youtuber play through the whole game. Interesting story, a bit emotional, only 90 minutes long give or take, also once you have played it once there isn't any reason to play it again since there would be nothing different. I recommend saving your money and watching someone play it, since it isn't really a game per se, it's an interactive narrative.

Its getting to the point where I'm thinking... I could at least get 2 decent games for £6 in the winter sale and get at least 12 hours in a campaign each... So... I may just watch it, I don't want to throw my money away on this one :(

I played through it. It's certainly enjoyable in that it's quite a unique experience. However if you've played a lot of those sorts of games, I'm not sure it adds anything vastly revolutionary. Also, I don't understand anything about making games at all, but if you did, I feel it would be less enjoyable for you as it would seem less interesting or mysterious.
In terms of the narrative, I thought it started very strongly, but as you go on it does seem to become slightly more cliched and self indulgent. There's some lines at the end I found particularly cheesy and navel-gazing.
If you want an enjoyable and interesting story-telling experience, it delivers that. It's just don't expect some massive epiphany or to consider this some kind of revolutionary masterpiece unless you have a very sheltered existence :P If you can easily spare the cash and are still interested, I'd say pick it up. If you want to save that money for dinner, then maybe just watch a play through of it. You'll get pretty much the same experience of the narrative, at least.
