if you have heard or not that the Steam release of Chaos:head has been banned and there is now an ongoing attempt to save it

What reason was it banned? i am not sure and no one else seems to since it is still getting a full Switch version

If you want to help - please check out the charge.org campaign - https://www.change.org/p/project-savechaoshead-campaigning-to-reverse-valvesoftware-s-ban-of-chaos-head-noah-savesciadv?redirect=false

i hope this is allowed - if not i will close this thread

Just to say i have nothing to do with the game or the people behind it or the campaign other than signing it myself - and i am NOT asking for money to be pledged (you can do this under the thing to get the campaign promoted on site)

thanks for your time - here is one of many articles mentioning the game and Steam release - https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-10-02/chaos-head-noah-game-steam-release-canceled/.190405

banned
...not band.
release
...not realse

Other than that, it sounds like an interesting topic to discuss.

First off, someone definitely knows why it was banned. If it's not being discussed, lawyers are likely involved. Soon enough an excuse to save face and distract will be announced. Probably soon after it gets released on the Switch.

Chaos:head

Hmm? Didn't the company make a statement that they didn't want to release it on Steam?

I think I saw something recently to the effect that conforming to Steam's rules of representation would be impossible because there would be too many things that would have to be changed and would create conflicts in the story.

In other words, there is no point in trying to sign it.
(It might make sense to sign a petition to Steam to stop restricting expression.)

This?
https://www.spike-chunsoft.co.jp/news/company/16332/

(machine translation)

Spike Chunsoft Co. has decided to cancel the release of the Steam version of "CHAOS;HEAD NOAH", which was scheduled for release on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

This was a final decision because Steam guidelines (regulations) do not allow the game to be released in its original state, and modifying the game according to the regulations would severely damage the game's gameplay.

We sincerely apologize to all fans of the Science Adventure series and those who have been eagerly awaiting the release of this title.

We are currently considering and working on the sale of the PC version on other platforms. We will inform you when it is ready.

It seems to me that you could give up on getting it on Steam.🤔

Yeah, same thing I saw. Not sure what to believe though, the fact that they don't want to release it on Steam or the fact that Steam rejected them. They could still push for the game on PC on other platforms though, such as EGS.

Seeing that their other pc games are on steam and not on other storefronts, i doubt that they dont want to release it on steam. I believe that doing the adjustment will either take longer than what their schedule is allowed to or change a big amount of content just for steam. Or maybe they just arent sure which content was flagged by steam.

They really don't. Right now, you have crappy visual novels on Steam about eating feces, having sex with corpses, and far worse stuff that I'm not even gonna type out here. There is a lot of inconsistency at Valve and considering approval is purely manual, a lot of things could be speculated here.

All things considered, a visual novel with only a hint of a lesbian relationship can be banned right away while something called SEX with HITLER is fine according to Steam.

I mean, this same game will be released on NINTENDO SWITCH of all places but somehow Valve found something wrong about it (we still don't know what though)

I wouldn't be surprised if a DEV submits a "clean" version to get through then updates or patches all that crap in after when no one will report it. That or half the time the person doing the approval process just barely looks at the game.

That's actually against Steam guidelines for devs. That's why many devs will just link some websites to uncensored patches to get around it. A loophole perhaps, but as long as it's not on Valve servers it's all good

That or half the time the person doing the approval process just barely looks at the game.

This is way more likely. Valve always had that "eh, do whatever you want" attitude for employees so it all depends if the person in charge of the approval process woke up on the wrong side of the bed today or not

"a visual novel with only a hint of a lesbian relationship." Thats is just not true whatsoever. The reason for a ban in that case would never be because of the sexuality but for other reasons. In most cases it is because of the looks/ age of the characters

Yeah, I don't understand this either. The amount of junk on Steam is staggering (reported an asset flip listed at $100 yesterday), and the amount of games that push all kinds of boundaries in all kinds of ways that challenge my perception of the human mind is not small either. Why not just release it under Mature?

I'm not arguing for or against the matter because who knows what happened. I'm just confused, with how lax Steam usually is.

🙄Thanks for the good info.

If this was the reason for the NG, we need to push Gabe off the boat and put him on a swimming diet.
(Just kidding, of course.)
However, the reasons for Valve's rejection would need to be clear.

It will lead to speculation that the approval criteria are greatly stricter or easier based on nationality or region.
This could happen not only with this game, but with others as well, and the more indie game developers are, the more serious the impact will be.🤔

drum up sales? you mean sales of this game? so to get more sales the best tactic is to not be on the most popular (and for many) the only pc platform they will use and instead only be sold on the Nintendo Switch - which many don't have (Googled sales and said 91 million and nearly 68 million people in UK alone)

Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case as it wouldn't be the first time someone uses that tactic, but it seems a bit odd for an established series as the " ; " one (I don't think the Stains;Gate universe actually has a name, at least not as far as I'm aware).
My suspicion is that the game actually fucked up big time somewhere (my bet is on explicit pedophilia) or it's yet another case of Valve deciding this time they'll have standards all of a sudden. There's also the possibility that the only reason they blocked this specific release on Steam is that they would need to actively promote it because of some contract so they can't just shove it under the rug as they usually do with anything questionable.

that is not really the case they are very strict depending on who reviews the game especially when it comes to things like the age of characters even in games that arent explicitly sexual

It seems that it's due to a middle school/high school environment portraying kids having sex and orgies, child decapitation, a police officer attempting to rape a child, as well as multiple child suicides which include a young girl slicing her wrist. This is just some of the things, there's apparently more.

I'm honestly surprised that Nintendo is allowing it to launch on their console.

No, Nitroplus games don't have "kids having sex and orgies". The game have some graphic gore but that's because the story is about a serial killing happening near the MC. And if you're smart the name of the game tell where it happens.

It's a Sci-Fi psychological story. You can even search google for "H" scenes and you will find nothing because this game have none. You can find girls in underwear images but that is a mod created by fans.

The ban looks like it's because of school anime setting.

I also didn't remember anything about sex and orgies, but then I was reminded that the main character has a lot of delusions (either sexual or gore) and that some of them are indeed disturbing. Most of them are not depicted on screen and you only have text, but the text is very explicit on what is happening

There is a campaign to send emails directly to Newell/ a few people in Valve.

Chances of the campaign working, extremely low. Almost as low as the campaign to convince From Software to release Dark Souls on PC.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (October 6, 2022) - Spike Chunsoft, Inc. today is pleased to announce the previously cancelled Steam release of CHAOS;HEAD NOAH will launch on Steam on October 7, 2022, PDT as originally planned.

The company received the following statement from Valve, the operator of Steam:
"Valve's content review team, the group that made the original decision, has re-examined CHAOS;HEAD NOAH and decided to reverse course and allow the game to ship on Steam, as is. We've also examined the process that led to the previous decision about CHAOS;HEAD NOAH, and made some changes to avoid situations like this in the future."

I dare to say, the fact that the Steam Deck actually needs more visual novels, perfect for a system like that. Also, it was already on the switch, there were multiple media reports about that, there are multiple porn games on steam, and CHAOS;HEAD is not even a porn game, etc, etc. At the end, probably the one in charge of reviewing the visual novels, that apparently had a hate boner against japanese visual novels, considering how many were getting rejected, was removed from the post.

Can't say much about this case but banning anime stuff from Valve was usually due to human factors. A former dev of Campo Santo is now working there and he was pretty vocal on Twitter about his dislike for anime & visual novels and how much he enjoys banning them

Human factor (like xarabas and quijote3000 say), some people just hate anime (probably: boomers) and take their personal opinion to work. That why Valve really need do clean house and boot out those who can`t disconnect their personal opinion from work. (or make better review processes like cutting some power from too ban-happy reviewer because we have Reddit mod problem)
