OK, today was a bad day technologically speaking.
I updated the operating system of my mobile phone and shit happened at some encryptation step. It was restored to factory blank. All deleted. Luckily enough the cloud made some magic and I restored most things and all the important some hours after.

But I'm here to speak about my "gaming" PC, that today died.
As always, yesterday it was still ok until night, but today after a couple of unsuccessful tries at starting it up I managed to fully boot windows and get a blue screen of death, too quick to read the content and I wasn't able to start it up again.
I guess it's in the logic board, I'll probably try to start it up without most of the ram modules, maybe one has blown up, but I don't have many more ideas.

So I'm thinking to the succession.
The old one leaves just a few useful things: 3 hd (win xp, win 7 and win 10, the last probably not activable with other components); the win 7 one is 1 TB and has plenty of life and games inside; I'd like to use it, also because some games have those nasty drm with limited activations and I don't want to lose them. The GPU is old (HD7750) and I will probably gift it. I have a spare power supply (HIPRO HP-W700WC3) to be used in case it's needed. Nothing more to report, the rest old/cheapo/second hand stuff.

Now I have to chose what to do.
That PC was used for some gaming, random and casual which is what I can do. Most importantly I use Rocksmith and some months ago I bought a wheel to enjoy some racing games. That would be the most logic use, basic casual gaming (no ultra and stuff) and music playing, nothing fancy. Other uses are already covered by other rigs I have (professional, music, pics, videos, email, etc).
I can think of 3 main options for a successor (if I neglect the one and only from my wife, which is no successor):

  • a steambox
  • a laptop
  • a desktop

The steambox could go to the living room and stick to the HDTV. I would go after some model around 500€ like Asus or Alienware which is basic by today standards (750ti I think) but ok with mine. The problem would be no Rocksmith (because I can´t easily do the clown in the living room). No use for my HD.

The laptop could do the music thing, and the driving thing. I could attach it to an external monitor or even the HDTV in some case. I wouldn't probably take it out of home normally. To get at least a 950M I should spend around 800€. Not the last thing but up to my standards. Just a bit expensive. No use for my HD.

The desktop would permit to use my HD and my power supply. I'd choose a 4 core CPU, 8 GB and a modern GPU, maybe a 1050 could be ok. Normal components, normal case, nothing fancy. I guess I'd need a new HD monitor. Not sure how much it would be the total cost. Thing is I don't want to build it (time is more important than money to me in this case). Or from a mainstream firm or assembled from the corner shop, but I'm not doing the dirty work. Some advice would be needed taking that into account, but remember: no state of the art or overpowered stuff.

I hope you guys can help me focus. I even added a poll. Sorry but no ga inside, in case you're wondering.

TL;DR: I just need some advice for a new gaming PC, the details are inside the WoT

edit: it came back, it's alive again! no idea what happened but 1 week off the power supply had some effect!! 8-)

What is the best choice for me?

View Results
A steambox (500€)
A laptop (800€)
A desktop (500-800€)

Steambox is a bad idea and something that is essentially already dead. They still didn't manage to sell the first 500,000 Steam Machines after a year on a global scale.

The question is then simple: do you want your gaming computer be portable or not. if yes for any reason, get a decent laptop, if not, stay with a desktop and use up as many things form the old as you can to save money.

i love my laptop, but it doesn't have nearly the power of my desktop. Find out what couple of things are most important to what you want to do on it, and spec out each - you might find that a laptop won't meet you needs

Have you been able to capture the error code in the blue screen? It would be something like 0x0000007c. It may also mention a file that it is associated with. It is possible that it is a software issue that could be easily fixed.

+1.
Laptop shouldn't even be an option on the poll.
Honestly Steambox shouldn't be either.

Did you have to press the power button multiple times until it fully booted up?
It could be the Bios battery that is dying or the PSU. Easiest step is to replace the Bios battery. Should be a CR 2032 cell. If it powers up go to the BIOS right away and check if the date, HDD boot order etc. are set right. If that doesn't help install the other PSU and see what happens.
Edit: If you don't really need the mobility of a laptop stick to a desktop pc. Everything is just more expensive or much less performance.

Well I can absolutely suggest you a good gaming pc for 350$ total (not counting monitor, but then, that's another 100$).
Only downside is that you can't exchange the power supply easily and it only has 4GB RAM, which you should upgrade to 8 imho.
But then, you could still repair your old one, but I guess you're not into the technical stuff :)

Get a PC, laptop is not for gaming.
I myself have a laptop because of school, but in the end I use it as a PC (Display, keyboard, mouse etc.) It's pretty old but I can still play some games and render videos on it, so I'm satisfied.
If you need a laptop for college like me then I suggest buying a small laptop with Atom inside, I have it myself and it's perfect for taking notes, it weights about 1 KG. Also cheap (about 185€?).

Do not go for the steambox. It's a dead horse. Not futureproof and just a dissappointment.
Do not go for the laptop: unreliable for gaming, impossible to improve to make it futureproof for casual gaming, too expensive.

That leaves the desktop: Enough companies that do assembly if you don't want to spend the time. You can futureproof it after a while by simply switching out the graphics card (assuming you go for an ssd) since mostly you're not going to be bottlenecked by the cpu anyway. That way it can last even longer than the other two options would for essentially less cash per time used on this rig.

steam machines are overpriced (and you can't play windows-only games). buy a desktop pc. it will give you the most performance per dollar. then add a steam link for your living room experience.

According to your story, I suggest desktop =)
Laptop is pricey and not as powerful for gaming, though I use laptop myself and happy with it because I play "light" game

no-no for steambox

I had a gaming laptop which was great for lugging around but when the gpu died the whole motherboard failed and I needed a new one. Anyways out of warranty and with options of ordering a questionable motherboard from china or paying an arm and a leg to the manufacturer
I just took the harddrives out and put it to a new desktop. Anyways get a desktop like all the votes want you to.

now, what should/could my target with a 500€ budget? no hd or power supply needed, but including monitor.

Right now, you are in a bad spot. Normally, low-budget means AMD, but their current CPU line is outdated as hell and Zen will come… fuck knows when.

Intel's low-budget is, well, really good in the ultra-low segment and pretty damn bad higher, as their prices go insanely over the top fast. Maybe an LGA-1151 motherboard with a Pentium G4500 or an i3-6100.

GPU is AMD territory for sure, an RX 470 could be a nice pick, or 460 for even lower budget. Forget NVidia: the GTX 1050 is just weak and the GTX 1060 cost about as much, but the 3GB version is a bad joke as it is nearly useless as a gaming card. At least you are better off with a 4 GB AMD card.

The RAM is a problematic thing. Thanks to Samsung's fuckup and Xiaomi now stamrolling the mid-range market, DDR4 chips are in overdemand and PC RAM module prices have nearly doubled in the past year. You may be lucky to afford a decent 2×4 or 1×8 GB stick. Luckily, frequency and latency still don't matter much in gaming.

That PSU you mentioned should power these, but once you get enough money, get something of at least acceptable quality.
